Application of casein glue

Application of casein glue Casein glue for wood - composition, application and properties

Everyone who has been for a long time are engaged in finishing works, use and know many types of adhesives. Casein glue can be considered one of the rather interesting options.

The uniqueness of such a product will lie in the fact that it is made only from components of natural origin. Thanks to this, becoming will be completely harmless to the human body.

Casein glue, or rather, what this is known to master finishers, builders and even ordinary people who at least once re-pasted wallpaper in their own apartment.

Such a substance has a long history, and its remains were found even in the pyramids of Egypt.

Basic information about casein

But, it was appreciated as a natural adhesive composition only in the 19th century, that is, relatively recently. In 1892, the components of the adhesive were changed in order to achieve high resistance to prolonged exposure to moisture. Technological and mass production of glue was only started in the last few decades.

In general, many people know rough information about the structure and properties of a product.

Whoever uses such a tool will be able to say for sure what this adhesive is made of. This is required for error-free work with it, as with an adhesive solution. But the most important thing is that solutions of such glue help to form an irreversible colloid.

Casein itself will be a granular powder, which are divided into four grades. They differ in appearance and quality:

  1. Application of casein glue Extra grade - granules have one size and color, and also have whitish-caramel shades.

  2. The first grade is represented by grains of a uniform size, among which there are ways to come across sticky granules, and they also have light yellow shades.
  3. Second grade - the mixture is distinguished by sticky lumps or granules, which differ slightly in size from each other, and also the grains have a yellow tint.
  4. The third grade is granules of different sizes, with a predominance of dark shades.

Now a little about properties.

Composition and properties of the adhesive

If we talk about the appearance of a natural adhesive mass, it will be a powder, which most often has gray shades.

Granules can vary in size for the glue, and the composition varies depending on the specific manufacturer, the requirements for the characteristics of the technical type.

But the main components are:

  • Water.
  • Rosin.
  • Phosphates and nitrates.
  • Calcium caseinate.

  • Amino acids.
  • Lime.
  • Sodium bicarbonate.
  • Kerosene.

The complex structure of milk protein from calcium salts (caseinates) will be the basis.

The components are considered environmentally friendly, due to which the packaging of casein glue has an ECO mark, and the list of components may expand or narrow.

Technical characteristics of casein glue are as follows:

  • Excellent solubility in water, no lumps appear.
  • Bonding strength of wood parts up to 100 kgf / square centimeter (can be attributed to the "extra" adhesive solution).
  • The dynamic viscosity is approximately 10.8 to 27 P.

  • Has a specific aroma.
  • The time to cure is maximum 5 hours.

Most of the main substance is found in goat milk - 4.6%. But basically the technical component is obtained from cow's milk, and it contains 3.

Advantages and disadvantages of casein glue

Finishers appreciate casein glue for its advantages. These include:

  • An excellent option for gluing wood products.
  • Environmental friendliness of the product, due to which you can work with it even without special equipment.
  • Duration of dry storage if regulations are followed.

  • The finished seam is resistant to prolonged exposure to moisture and temperature extremes.

The disadvantages are as follows:

  • After the powder is brought to a ready state, the shelf life will be no more than 5 hours, and you should prepare the exact amount of the mixture so that you do not dispose of the hardened mass afterwards.
  • Adhesive from natural ingredients is susceptible to mold.
  • Over time, the finished joint may darken, which will spoil the appearance of the product.

Protect the sticky mass from the appearance of mold and mildew, you can add a small amount of ammonia to it.

Production of industrial composition

Glue is made according to GOST, and this applies to the production of adhesive mass by large enterprises. For manufacturing, the waste remaining after milk processing is used. To them you can add rennet enzymes, which can be diluted with various amino acids. The most common choice is lactic acid. Auxiliary materials - slaked fame - fluff, sodium fluoride and copper sulfate, caustic soda, kerosene and soda ash.

Users add fillers according to the recipe - Portland cement brands from 400 to 600, bone meal, chalk and liquid glass.

Two varieties - ordinary and extra

There are two main types of adhesives based on components of natural type "extra" and "ordinary". The first option has technical characteristics, costs much more, and is also used for wooden products, joining various materials. the second at woodworking enterprises. Casein-type extras are selected by professionals and provide a high strength compound that can withstand environmental and physical stress.

In hardware stores, you can easily find about the type based on milk protein - "extra" and "ordinary".

Glue, its properties and application

It is known where casein is most often used for work, in which areas and with what components:

  • Various types of fabrics.
  • Wood and plywood.
  • Faience and foam.
  • Expanded polystyrene and cardboard.

Due to the fact that such an adhesive composition is suitable for working with various materials, and also used for various industrial areas:

  • Furniture production.
  • Construction - added to certain paints and putties.
  • Printing and painting.
  • Chemical industry.
  • Food business.

  • Create labels.

Casein wood glue is used to whitewash wood in order to protect it from parasites, as well as the negative effects of environmental factors.

Casein glue for icon painting

Casein agent can be used for icon painting, painting. It contains sulfur, nitrogen, which will stop the decay processes. To improve the characteristics of the adhesive composition for use in icon painting, and its composition is saturated with additional components.

These include:

  • Buru.
  • Liquid ammonia.
  • Caustic lime.
  • Ammonium carbonate.
  • Caustic potassium, sodium.

Due to these components, the adhesion to various bases increases. To increase the strength of the joints, you need to add formalin or even acetic acid alumina.

Making the composition of the house

If you wish, you can make such an adhesive composition with your own hands. In this case, it is unlikely that it will be possible to save money, and such techniques will be more interesting to masters of folk art. In fact, it will be much easier to buy the original packaging, and therefore we will consider four methods of preparation.

So, step-by-step instructions - the first method:

  • Buy low-fat cottage cheese, and pass it through a sieve.
  • Rinse the mass under warm water.
  • Add some ammonia, stir until a mushy mass is formed.

Casein glue composition for ordinary painting work is also suitable. Step-by-step instruction number 2:

  • Application of casein glue Buy low-fat milk, wait until it sours and curdles , and then place it in a warm place.

  • Strain the mixture through cheesecloth.
  • Rinse the gruel under a water jet, wrap with gauze and roll into a bag.
  • Boil until fat residues are removed.
  • Dry the mass with sweat at room temperature.

The finished substance will be casein, which must be poured with water, add borax for structuring to a working state.

Cooking method No. 3 based on natural ingredients:

  • In a deep glass container, mix 2 grams of slaked lime, 6 tablespoons of pure water, 8 grams rosin, 2 tablespoons of casein-type powder.
  • Let the mixture sit for 2 hours.
  • Mix 200 ml of water and 4 grams of borax, add warm water.
  • Combine both mixtures.

  • Add 2 tablespoons of water and another 4 ml of ammonia.

After thorough mixing, the homemade mixture should be applied immediately. Method # 4:

  • Heat 2 liters of milk in a tin saucepan.
  • Pour in 6 tablespoons of vinegar.
  • Heat over low heat, stir regularly.

  • When curd lumps appear, strain the liquid through cheesecloth.
  • The thick mass should be transferred to the pan, and then add 0. 1 kg of baking soda, and then 4 tablespoons of water.

Cool the mixture and stir it again before use. As you can see, making casein glue at home is not so easy.

Casein composition from powder

In practice, there are many proven and reliable recipes. There are for cardboard and paper, for furniture and wood, for porcelain and glass, and also for waterproof paint. Everything will depend on the starting components in addition to water and powder, which impart the desired characteristics. To prepare a regular adhesive, simple steps will be sufficient, and this applies to powder from hardware stores.

The instructions are as follows:

  • Prepare a glass clean container with a flat and wide bottom.

  • Combine two measures of water and one measure of powder in a container.
  • Mix continuously for 1/3 hour.

After obtaining a homogeneous mass without lumps, it should be applied in 4-5 hours. You can store the product in the package only in a bright, clean, dry and well-ventilated room. Secondary use is unacceptable.

Dry adhesives are best suited for working with wooden parts, which must have increased resistance to moisture and elasticity. If you wish, you can make the composition yourself to connect the wood parts. For this, the cold gluing method is used.
