The facade of the house, decorated in retro or vintage style, is the pride of the owner and the envy of the neighbors. Brushed (artificially aged) materials are expensive, but well worth it. Such a house will not go unnoticed, it will always attract admiring glances.
Aged lining (brushed)
The brushed lining, which has recently appeared on the Russian market, will provide a special charm to the facade. It differs from the usual one only in its appearance.
Otherwise, the same standards apply for this finishing material and the same installation rules apply.
Brushed (aged) lining
Brushed lining is called not only "artificially aged", but also "mechanically aged", " textured "," textured ". The name often, but not always, depends on the way the wood is processed through which the effect was obtained.
Brushed lining of different shades
Natural aging of wood occurs because its texture is not uniform. There are hard and soft fibers.
Soft ones break down faster than hard ones, so dark streaks and depressions form. This process can be accelerated by using a suitable surface treatment method:
Any of these methods is suitable for self-made artificially aged lining. All the tools and materials necessary for this are inexpensive and available. The concept of "brushing" includes giving wood not only a certain texture, but also color.
Sample of brushed lining
You can buy both a standard artificially aged lining, and euro lining with a similar surface. These materials are manufactured in accordance with two standards: Russian and European. The latter regulates all the parameters of the euro lining and is more demanding than the domestic one.
Dimensions of the lining calm
Schemes of the lining with dimensions
An important characteristic for the lining is its size. The exact parameters of the material verified by practice ensure its strength and durability.
It is due to the optimal dimensions of the lining that it is not threatened with drying out and the appearance of cracks. Therefore, when choosing these products, first of all, attention is paid to the compliance of their dimensions with standards.
Standard lining dimensions.
|Product parameters||Standard||Euro lining|
|Thickness||12-40 mm||12.5 mm|
|Width||76-200 mm||80, 100, 110, 120, 140 mm|
|Length|| 0. |
|Spike height||5 mm||8 mm|
There is a list of permissible deviations from the declared manufacturer sizes:
Of the brushed euro lining, such a variety as "Calm" is in the greatest demand.
Products of this brand are distinguished by the absence of a shelf on the front panel, which allows you to obtain a tight connection and an even surface of the cladding with barely noticeable grooves in the area of the seams.
How to choose the right wooden lining
For obtaining the effect of artificial aging of wood is extremely important that its texture is beautiful, and the surface is pliable to processing. Conifers fully meet these requirements. Therefore, brushed lining is made mainly of spruce, pine and larch.
When choosing a finishing material, you need to understand that the color and shade of the wood is not so important, since artificial aging involves further processing of the panel with a tinting compound, varnish or oil.
The main attention should be paid to the quality of the wood and the size of the product.
Among conifers, larch is the most durable. Among its advantages are low thermal conductivity, moisture resistance, durability. Spruce is the softest of conifers, pine is the most resinous.
It is decided which lining to choose, based on the specific operating conditions of this material and their financial capabilities.
In English, "brush" is "brush". Consequently, brushing involves processing wood with an abrasive material. This method is called "mechanical". With its help, you can get a significantly more beautiful chipped wood texture than that which forms as a result of its natural aging.
For self-aging, it is recommended to choose pine lining.
Spruce has a looser structure and a less effective arrangement of knots (their crowding is often noted, which gives the panel a peculiar appearance). Hardwoods are much more difficult to handle as they are more dense.
Calm pine lining
The mechanical method of brushing is the most laborious. This is its main disadvantage.Another disadvantage is that when manually processing wood, it will not be possible to obtain sufficiently thin and deep grooves.
But for the facing material, they are not so important. Deep embossed cracks are essential in the manufacture of exclusive furniture and other products.
During the mechanical processing of wood, a lot of dust and small sawdust will be generated, therefore, the room in which they will work is properly prepared: furniture (machines, tools) is closed and high-quality ventilation is provided.
Tools and materials that will be needed to perform the work:
Photo of an orbital grinder
6-row metal brush
Brush and drill bit
Glazing compound for wood
If you do not have a sander, you can use a regular drill.
In this case, it is more convenient to brush not with a brush with metal bristles, but with an abrasive ball. It processes wood more delicately, so no additional sanding is required after it. It is enough to remove the dust and you can start painting the wood with the chosen tool.
Step 1. The lining is placed on the workbench and fixed to it so that the panel is stationary.
To do this, use a vice or some kind of device.
Step 2. The attachment with metal bristles is fixed on the grinder and the wood is processed. A rotating brush is carried over the panel, observing a uniform pressure. The process is repeated until distinct grooves with a depth of 2-3 mm appear.
Step 3. If you are not satisfied with the quality of processing in any part of the panel, the desired result is achieved with a manual brush with metal bristles. Most often, you have to modify the ends.

Step 4. Lightly sand the panel with sandpaper.
This will allow not only to level the surface, but also to remove small fibers, which, if not removed, will absorb paints and varnishes abundantly during further processing. The deeper the cuts, the more thorough the sanding should be.
You can use an orbital sander with a special abrasive attachment: a nylon brush. But with manual processing, a more spectacular surface is obtained.

Step 5 .
Cover the panel with a wood glaze. This composition will make the wood even more decorative and will reliably protect it from environmental influences.
To give the pattern a texture of brightness and juiciness, the lining is covered with any transparent moisture-resistant varnish.
A water-soluble stain can be used instead of alkyd impregnation. After it dries, apply a layer of wax.
A beautiful shade can be given with wood impregnation oil. After this treatment, the waxing procedure is also performed.
Painting wood after brushing
If you need wider and deeper chipping of the lining, use a grinder with a stone disc 2-2 thick , 5 mm. The sequence of work is the same: they are brushed, polished, tinted and covered with either wax or varnish.
Glazing impregnation for wood
Another way to artificially age wood is to burn it.
This method is less laborious, but more dangerous. It will take skill in handling a gas burner and utmost care during the work.
Fire treatment has its pros and cons. The advantage is speed and low labor intensity. The disadvantage of this method is in the poor colors.
Only shades of black and brown are possible.
Gas burners and blowtorches

Stages of work.
Step 1. Preparation of the workplace.
Lining can be fired outdoors or indoors. In any case, take care of safety and remove all flammable substances and liquids. When working indoors, provide a constant supply of fresh air. Put on gloves.
The flame is passed along the grain, trying to emphasize the texture of the wood. Each panel is fired to match the selected color scheme. They strive to carry out the burner the same number of times, since the consequences of wood burnout cannot be corrected.
The effect of aged wood can be achieved by firing with a blowtorch
Step 3. Sand the lining sandpaper.
Step 4. Cover the panels with a layer of wax and polish with a dry cloth.
Brushing with firing
If there is not enough experience in uniform burning of wood, you can use another option for brushing the lining with fire. You will need the same tools as in the previous method, including a sander and a metal bristle attachment.
In this variant of brushing, the lining is fired so that a completely black surface, burnt to a depth of several millimeters, is obtained.

This layer is removed with a grinder equipped with a brush with metal bristles.

Achieve the desired depth of the cuts. After that, the surface of the lining is polished with sandpaper, tinted in the selected method, varnished.
To make the drawing expressive, the lining is covered with oil. Both outdoor wood oils and outdoor protective hybrid hydraulic oils can be used.
An excellent choice is YS M300 hydraulic oil.
Tools and materials:
Colored parquet oil
Oil OSMO 2708

Facade cladding with clapboard is a long and laborious process that requires preliminary preparation. For the installation of this finishing material, a lathing is required, which must follow the contours of window and door openings. Therefore, you need to make sure that the bearing surface is reliable enough and reinforce all loose bricks and window and door trims.
An example of a facade before finishing work
It is necessary to select the method of fixing the lining in advance. There are several of them:
Claymer for fastening the lining
For fastening to self-tapping screws, a drill or screwdriver is required. A battery-powered screwdriver is preferable, since it is much more convenient to work with it.
For fastening with nails, use a pneumatic gun, for fastening with staples - a construction stapler. Kleimers are traditionally used for interior decoration.
For outer cladding, the lining is attached either to screws or nails.
Facade decorating requires not so much skill as care and accuracy. You need to have all the necessary tools at hand:
Technology of brushed lining installation
Molding can be mount to walls vertically, horizontally or diagonally. For vertical fixing, the Soft Line Euro lining is best suited. When decorating the facade, they use such a technique as emphasizing the most significant elements with vertically and diagonally installed panels.
Step 1. Installation of the first layer of vapor barrier.
With the help of staples and a stapler, the vapor barrier film is attached so that its canvases overlap each other by at least 10 cm. The open edges of the film are glued with double-sided tape.
Installation of the battens.
Wooden lathing for siding
For the installation of the battens, slats with a section of 20x40 mm are used, which are installed in a direction perpendicular to the installation of the panels. The rail is fastened with self-tapping screws. If the wall is brick or concrete, holes are pre-drilled (through the rail), dowels are driven in, and only after that screws are screwed in.
The battens are installed in increments of 40-50 cm.
During work, the correct installation is regularly checked using a level. It is necessary to ensure that all elements of the crate are located in the same plane.
If wall irregularities are found, thin boards or plywood are placed under the planks. The bars should be in the corners of the house and along the contour of door and window openings.
Installation of wooden lathing
Installation of insulation.
Plates of mineral wool or foam plastic are installed in the openings between the battens of the battens and fixed to the wall using dowel nails.
Step 4. Installation of the second vapor barrier layer.
A vapor barrier film is attached over the insulation and the crate.
Step 5 . Installation of the second level of the lathing.
If euro lining is selected, installation of the second level of the batten is not required, since on the back of each panel there are gutters that provide moisture removal from the wood. If a brushed lining without gutters is used, bars of a similar section are attached over the slats of the first level of the crate: 20x40. Thus, the ventilation gap is arranged.
Step 6. Installation of the first lining.
The lining is mounted in the direction from bottom to top or top to bottom. The correct installation of the first row largely determines the appearance of the finish. Therefore, before installing the lower panels, markings are made using self-tapping screws and a thread stretched between them.
If the wall is flat, a horizontal line is drawn on it.
The first panels must be positioned at such a distance from the base / plinth or cornice that an ebb can be installed. The first lining, like all subsequent ones, is installed with a spike up when laying from the bottom up, and with a spike down when laying up down.
Clapboard facade decoration
Mounting the paneling horizontally
Completed installation of the paneling
1. No gaps between panels
The facade is constantly exposed to aggressive environmental influences.
Therefore, the geometric dimensions of the panels will constantly change: increase when wet and decrease when dry. In order to compensate for these movements, gaps of 1-2 mm are required. Therefore, when installing the lining, it is knocked against each other, taking into account this requirement.
2. Lack of moisture and biological protection
The panels must be prepared for installation on the facade: covered with an antiseptic and moisture-proof compound.
Antiseptic for wood
3. Skew of panels
In order to avoid this trouble, check the correctness of installation of each panel with a level. The lining should lie strictly horizontally.
If you follow all the rules and know the nuances of the work, cladding the facade with brushed clapboard will not cause difficulties, and the quality of installation will be impeccable.
