Siding made using Canadian technologies is ideal for our climatic conditions, which explains its popularity among the domestic consumer. And if we add to this its impeccable appearance, simple installation and a service life of at least 50 years, this material can be called the best option for home decoration. The range of Canadian siding is quite wide, and in order to make the choice it was easier, you should familiarize yourself in more detail with its types, characteristics and installation features.
Canadian siding
Originally Canadian siding made only from solid and pressed wood and had a limited model range. Nevertheless, such panels were distinguished by high performance characteristics and were in many ways superior to other types of finishing materials.
With the development of technology, manufacturing companies have the opportunity to produce vinyl siding that is more resistant to various kinds of influences and as close as possible to wood in appearance.

Now the definition of "Canadian siding" means both natural siding made of wood and its vinyl counterparts. The production of wood-based panels has significantly decreased with the advent of PVC products, but their quality has become much higher. Today, such material is considered elite, and not everyone can afford it. During the production process, wood fibers are mixed with polymer resins and pressed under enormous pressure and high temperature.
The formed panels are covered with several layers of polymer compounds, as a result of which the products acquire increased water resistance, strength and decorative texture that imitates different types of wood, even the most exotic ones.

In addition to excellent decorative qualities, this type of siding has other advantages:
Canadian or wood siding
Siding from cedar
With proper care, such casing lasts about 25 years without losing its visual appeal. There are three types of this siding: block house, type board, imitation of a bar.

Wooden siding
Vinyl panels are not in vain more popular than wood, because the demand for them is due to a whole list of advantages:
The external coating ideally imitates the natural texture of wood of various species, as well as other types of finishing materials (stone, brick), and a variety of color options.

Many companies produce Canadian siding, as the demand for this material is very high. Unfortunately, not all manufacturers have the quality that meets the declared parameters, and this is only found out during the operation of the facade. In order not to miscalculate, choose the products of the best brands holding leading positions in the finishing materials market.
Mitten
The Canadian company "Mitten Vinyl" was founded in 50s of the last century.
She was one of the first to master the technology of joining various layers of plastic into a single whole, and received the corresponding patent. Until now, the production of PVC siding is based on this technology, despite the fact that so much time has passed. The products of this brand are in great demand in Europe, the States, Australia, and they are imported there from the province of Ontario, where the company's largest plant is located.
Mitten siding first came to the Russian market in 1996 and very soon became a leader, leaving behind the popular brands at that time. The reason for this was not only the quality-price ratio, but also a wide range of models in texture and color.
Products of this brand have all the necessary certificates and fully comply with the industry standards of those countries where they are sold - Canada, USA, Australia, Russia and others.
Colors of Mitten Vinyl siding
The range of Mitten siding is represented by four collections:
The panels are distinguished by the presence of an additional stiffening rib, higher strength and rich colors. This siding is designed for wind gusts up to 290 km / h, not subject to deformation, painted over the entire depth of the panel;
Sentry series color matrix
This siding is not available for sale, since the series belongs to special ones, and therefore it can be purchased only on order;
Mitten siding - Board series. Batten
As with the upright models, Southern Beaded siding is only available to order.
Mitten Siding - Southern Beaded Series
This the company has been known in Canada since 1974, and today the number of its branches in other countries exceeds two hundred. Kaycan brand siding has received numerous awards for quality and performance. The cost of the material is quite high, but this disadvantage is fully paid off by the durability and excellent appearance of the skin. The paneling imitates painted cedar boards, and the color palette has about 30 different options.
Vinyl siding Kaycan

On the domestic market, Kaycan siding is presented in two series:
Logo of the vinyl siding manufacturer "Remico"
Remico has a very high reputation not only in Canada itself, but also in many European countries, where Canadian siding is successfully sold.
The material fully meets all international standards, which is confirmed by numerous certificates and quality awards. A distinctive feature of this siding is its texture, which is almost indistinguishable from natural wood. The range of colors is very limited and includes about 20 pastel shades.
Another difference of this material from other brands of siding is the locking system. The standard fastening on the panels replaces a special latch-lock: an additional bend is located on the upper edge of the lamella, which provides stable resistance to tensile forces.
As a result, the finished sheathing perfectly tolerates even hurricane winds without any deformation.
On the Russian market, Remico siding is represented by three collections:
Ontario Forest, shades
In addition to these companies, brands such as Novik, Royal Group Technologies are trusted by consumers , Gentek, a manufacturer of vinyl siding, and KWP Products, a manufacturer of pressed wood siding.

Installation of siding is generally quite simple, but there are many nuances that need to be considered when installing panels. First of all, this is the correct preparation of the base, the sequence of fastening the elements, competent fixation of the parts to the surface.
Let's consider all the subtleties of facade cladding using the example of installing Mitten vinyl siding.
The first step is to calculate the material for the cladding. Now it is very easy to do this using calculator programs. If the house is of a simple configuration, then you can calculate it yourself: measure the walls, find their area, subtract the area of window and door openings, sum up the values obtained. After that, the total area of the outer walls must be divided by the area of one panel in order to find out how many pieces of panels are needed.
Since part of the material will be cut off during cutting and fitting, you always need to buy siding with a margin of about 10-15%.
Calculation of siding and accessories for cladding a house
After calculating the amount of siding, you should prepare tools for installation so as not to be interrupted during work on searches:
Basic tools and equipment for installation
Now you can start preparing the facade. They start by dismantling all the hinged elements that will interfere with the installation of the crate. Plants climbing the walls should also be removed.
Then the surface needs to be cleaned and prepared for work, and here it all depends on the type of base.
Wooden walls are cleaned of dirt, mold, mildew and areas overgrown with moss are carefully scraped to clean wood and treated with fungicides.
Wall treatment
Rotten boards must be completely replaced, as the decay process will continue under the cladding. Loose elements are strengthened with screws or nails. Next, the wooden walls are primed with an antiseptic compound in two layers and allowed to dry completely.
Apply an antiseptic primer
Install a vapor barrier layer: sheathe the facade with a special membrane, fixing the overlapping strips of material with a stapler.
Vapor barrier
Brick walls are also cleaned of dust and dirt, checked for the strength and integrity of the masonry. Crumbled bricks are knocked out with a hammer, the seams are treated with a metal brush, the cracks are sewn up. Then the cement-sand mortar is kneaded, the bricks are selected by size and all the recesses and gaps formed are closed. When the mortar dries, it remains to prime the facade with a deep penetration compound.
Applying a primer to a brick wall
Plastered surfaces also need to be fully inspected, knocked off peeled plaster, check for cracks in the walls.
Removing the plaster
If cracks are found, they are also cleaned with a brush, large ones are embroidered, a standard cement mortar is used for filling.
Sealing cracks in brick walls

Places affected by mold or mildew must be treated separately with chlorine-containing products. Finally, the entire area is treated with a water-repellent primer.
Deep penetration primer
Both metal and wood battens are suitable for Canadian siding.
The choice depends only on your financial capabilities. If you prefer wood, make sure that all the beams are of the same cross-section, level, without visible defects and well dried. The raw wood subsequently deforms, which will not have the best effect on the cladding.
Stages of battens installation
Wooden battens for siding
Since we are looking at standard horizontal siding, our battens will be vertical. The racks are attached with a step of 30-50 cm, their location must be controlled by the level.
Additional beams or profiles are attached around the openings, as well as along the lower and upper edges of the facade. In the inner and outer corners, the posts are placed at a distance of 40-50 mm from the wall joints. Each element of the frame must be fixed as tightly as possible to the wall, otherwise, under strong wind loads, the sheathing can tear off.
Lathing for siding
If insulation is required, after installing the frame, you can install heat-insulating plates by filling them in the crate cells. On top of the insulation, a windproof membrane is attached, laying it with an overlap and fixing it with stapler brackets to the crate.

If you do not need to insulate the facade, you can immediately proceed to the main process - the installation of siding cladding.

Step 1. Mark the bottom of the casing. To do this, determine the desired height of the sheathing from the ground, put a mark on one of the racks and measure up 5 cm. At this level, you need to put marks on all the other racks of the frame.
For convenience, you can attach a long string to the first post and pull it around the perimeter of the house. Then, using a level, set a horizontal line and make marks on the crate.
Step 2. If you plan to install an ebb over the plinth, start with it. They retreat from the marking line downwards 30-40 mm, and at this level another horizontal line is drawn, along which the ebb will be attached.
The corner elements of the low tide are installed first, then the remaining planks are screwed, laying them with an overlap of 2.5 cm.

Step 3. Take the corner profile, apply it to the crate so that about 6 mm remains between the upper cut of the profile and the cornice, and screw it with self-tapping screws. The first self-tapping screw is inserted into the uppermost hole of the perforation, but not in the center, but in the upper part.
If you screw in the fasteners in the center of the hole, the profile will move down. So, screw the self-tapping screw, leaving a gap of 1 mm between the vinyl and the cap. In the same way, the upper self-tapping screw is attached on the other side of the profile. The rest of the fasteners are screwed in in the center of the holes with a step of 20-25 cm.
General installation rules
To connect the corner profiles to each other, you need cut off the perforated edges by 2.
5 cm from the lower element, and then slip it under the upper one by 2 cm. The remaining 5 mm are needed to compensate for thermal expansion.

Step 4. Attach the starter bar. It is applied with the upper edge to the marking line and fixed with self-tapping screws in increments of 25-30 cm.
Between adjacent strips, as well as between the lateral edge of the strip and the corner profile, a distance of 6 to 12 mm should remain.
Starting strip

Step 5. Next, proceed to the design of the openings.A j-profile is set: a double incision is made in the upper lateral part of the profile, the "eyelet" is bent outward. The same incision is made at the bottom and folded inward.
These elements will be located above and below the window opening. At the side profiles, rectangular cutouts should be made at the top and bottom for a tight connection of all elements. If the parts fit together correctly, the seams remain even and tight, you can fix it with self-tapping screws. At the same stage, ebbs are mounted and the joints are closed with a window strip.

Step 6.
After finishing the openings, you can start assembling the panels themselves. The first panel is inserted into the starting strip, leveled, screwed to the crate with self-tapping screws. A correctly fixed panel can be moved from side to side, but if it sits tightly and does not move even a millimeter, you must loosen the fastener. Mitten siding is laid with an overlap of 2.5 cm, while the joining lines are spaced horizontally with an interval of at least 60 cm.
The overlaps must not coincide vertically after at least three rows, otherwise the appearance of the siding will deteriorate. The outermost fasteners in each panel should be located at a distance of 15 cm from the ends.

Installation process
Near the openings, the panels are cut to the desired length and carefully inserted into the j-profile. If the panel under the windows does not fit in width, you need to measure the distance from the edge of the lock of the penultimate panel to the edge of the lock of the final panel and add 1.6 cm.
Cut the panel in width according to measurements and insert it into place.
J-profile
Step 7. Having fastened the penultimate panel of the casing, mount the finishing strip. It should be located close to the roof of the house and strictly horizontally. Measure the distance from the bottom of the plank to the lock of the penultimate panel, subtract 2 mm and cut off the upper part of the last panel along with the lock according to measurements.
Now all that remains is to insert the lamella into place and bring the upper edge into the finishing strip.
Finishing overlay
Almost complete house cladding
Step 8. The gables of the house are sheathed. On both sides of the pediment, in the corners, a j-profile is mounted, and the same profile is attached to the upper edge of the siding. The panels are mounted in the same way as on the walls, with the only difference that their ends are cut at an angle on both sides.

Step 9. When filing the roof overhangs, two parallel profiles are first attached - the first on the bottom section of the chamfer, the second on the wall of the houseBoth profiles must be in the same horizontal plane. Measure the distance between them and cut the soffit panels so that they are 6.5 mm shorter in width than this distance. Now all that remains is to install the soffits, putting their ends into the profiles.

Wooden Canadian siding can be installed, like vinyl, horizontally and vertically, depending on the type of panel. Hardware for fastening is always included, and it is made of stainless steel or aluminum. It is strongly discouraged to use other fittings, since the reliability of the fastening of the entire casing depends on this.
Substrate preparation is carried out in the same way as for vinyl siding. The main thing is that the surface is strong, dry and in good condition.
It is also desirable to make the lathing for wooden siding from wood, for this a 40x60 mm beam is perfect. The fasteners are usually galvanized nails or screws.
Installation of wooden siding, scheme
The starting strip is attached at a distance of at least 15 cm from the ground, otherwise the bottom edge of the sheathing will constantly damp ...
The corners are mounted in two ways - overlay and flush. The second option is preferable, since in this case the weathering of the corners is reduced, and the cladding retains its attractive appearance longer. Fastening of the panels is carried out by the "tongue-and-groove" method, but at the same time the upper panel overlaps the lower one, closing the joints.

Decorating the house with wooden siding
The procedure for installing elements to the crate is the same as for vinyl counterparts: the corners, starting strip, additional elements on windows and doors are installed first. Then the paneling is performed and the roof overhangs are made.
All gaps between the parts must be sealed with a sealant.
