Carpet stairs Finishing the stairs with carpet

Carpet-type covering can be laid not just in the rooms, but also on stairs. It makes it possible to revitalize the room, create a cozy atmosphere, and also has sound-absorbing properties. When choosing materials, people often pay attention to the shade, but do not take into account other important parameters. But it is better to choose carpet for stairs not just by design, but also by material, as well as by other criteria. Consider the features of finishing the stairs with carpet.

Features of finishing the steps with carpet

Unlike the standard covering, the carpet stands out for the lack of expressiveness of the pattern, due to which it can be used for flooring on all areas, including corridor, stairs and narrow spaces. This material is incredibly durable due to its dense structure - the pile is attached on the primary base, and then the fixing layer and the secondary base follow.

Carpets are highly resistant to wear, making them ideal for covering all surfaces, including stairs. In order to properly finish a staircase with carpet, you need to think in advance what type of material is suitable, how to properly lay it. To do this, first of all, it is worth deciding whether the coverage will be fragmentary or continuous.

In the first case, it will cover only the surface of the tread, and in the second, it will cover the entire staircase. Before laying, it is necessary to accurately determine the dimensions of the risers and treads.

It is equally important to calculate the amount of material, and it is quite simple to do this:

  • Measurements make paths from top to bottom.
  • It is required to determine the dimensions of the risers and treads, calculate the area, add 4 cm to all values.
  • Next, determine the coverage area for the lower and upper platforms.

Good advice! Carpet is required to be bought with a margin, since minor mistakes in work are almost inevitable.

Advantages and disadvantages

The carpet covering has many advantages. A very pleasant appearance immediately catches the eye - even old stairs are noticeably improved and look much better. Even the most common self-adhesive carpet covering the steps looks very interesting.

In addition, this finishing method has other advantages:

  • Carpet stairs The material is durable and lasts for years.

  • Easy to clean and stack.
  • Easy to clean with detergents.
  • Creates sound insulation.
  • Insulates surfaces, which is extremely important for metal and concrete stairs.
  • Does not cause an allergic reaction.

  • Allows you to create any staircase design, due to which it fits perfectly into the interior of the room.

But the carpet covering is not without its drawbacks:

  • Allergic reactions to wool carpet may appear.
  • Promotes dust build-up.
  • Insects may appear in natural fibers.
  • Artificial canvas is not durable.

By virtue of its merits, the carpet wins most other types of finishing. The carpet can be easily shifted, and therefore, even if worn out, there are no problems with replacing the material.

Varieties of material

At the moment, various carpets are produced. They differ in production technology, weaving and other parameters. From the point of view of the properties of the consumer type, the most important is the material from which the carpet is made:

  1. Wool - can be fully or partially natural (in the first case it will be more expensive).

The material is distinguished by a high degree of strength, is easily dyed in various colors, lasts a very long time, and even more so if it contains components of artificial origin (for example, 25% nylon). The downside was the rather high cost.

  2. Nylon - Carpet ladder covers can be made of synthetic fibers based on polyamide. In finished form, they are not painted, they are strong enough, but they get dirty quite quickly. Moreover, such material options are affordable.

  3. Polypropylene is another artificial type polymer, which is even cheaper in price. But it also has no durability, and the fibers begin to wear out quickly, and after that the coating will only have to be thrown away. It is simple to maintain - it can be easily cleaned of all types of contamination.
  4. Polyester can also be easily washed, affordable, but starts to wear out quickly.

It turns out that it is best to opt for natural carpet, while wool may not be 100%, only 80% is enough.

The staircase, which is sheathed with natural carpet, looks very beautiful in life and in the photo. The wool is pleasant to the touch, due to which it creates a pleasant atmosphere in the house.

How to choose a material for a staircase

In terms of material, structure and production technology, the carpet for stairs has no fundamental differences. But this material may differ in size and shape - it is possible to choose the option of the carpet, or create special cuts to cover each step.

When selecting, you should pay attention to the following important points:

  • Carpet material - nylon and wool are the most durable.

  • The number of people in the house - if you walk the stairs very often, wool will not work, as it gets dirty quickly.
  • The method of fastening (rails, rods and adhesive) - this moment needs to be thought out in advance. For example, you can fix a monolithic carpet runner with bars, and you can glue all the fragments. For gluing, you will need a rubber-based version of the canvas.
  • Design - the range of colors, texture and pattern should fit perfectly into the style of the room.

  • Ladder material - for example, a rubber mastic sheet is suitable for concrete, since it retains heat best of all.

It is extremely important that if households are allergic to wool, you should not risk it - it is better to buy a covering made of artificial fibers.

How to sheathe a wooden staircase with carpet

Three methods are used to mount the coating on the stairs - they are fixed by means of slats, rods and glued. The canvas can be simply laid in a row as the first flight and pressed down with the bars. But most often the material is cut into several sections, each of which is fixed to the surface, and the excess is removed by means of a metal guide or a knife.

Staircase carpet can be done with your own hands. This will require all the necessary materials, tools (rods, rivers, guides, adhesive, saw and knife) and minimal working skills.

Please note that surface preparation should be carried out prior to installation - to get rid of large depressions and roughness, and also to strengthen loose steps.

Carpet stairs Carpet can be laid on a wooden staircase using various methods, for example, by means of bars. The canvas is required to be laid in the form of a carpet runner and is attached with special rods that are inserted into the rings.

An obvious advantage is the simplicity of the method - you can cope with the installation even with minimal skill, but in the interior this coating will not look so beautiful. Thanks to the fixation with the rods, the canvas can be easily removed, fully cleaned and laid on the stairs. It is important that often the carpet wears out at the edges.

It can be easily moved and adjusted by means of a bar lock. Another option would be to lay the carpet on a wooden staircase using fixing strips.

Each has thorns on which the canvas will be easily laid. After all the slats have been nailed, you can lay the material with staples (a construction stapler is required).

Slats can be nailed onto a ladder made of wood using simple nails. There is another simple method - to buy ready-made lining on the steps of a wooden staircase made of carpet and lay them according to the instructions. Such overlays are fixed with glue (there are often self-adhesive models on sale), without dowels or screws.

Ideally, carpet should be glued in a straight line, and guides are better for this.

A staircase covered with carpet is not uncommon. This is a practical and interesting design solution that makes it possible to significantly transform a room and give it a newer and more modern appearance. From the point of view of durability, it is recommended to buy materials that contain 80% wool and 20% artificial fibers. In the presence of allergies, it is required to lay a synthetic type covering, which will not cause a negative reaction of the body.
