Everyone wants their home to be not only comfortable, but also attractive from the outside. That is why special attention is paid to the decoration of facades, and the variety of architectural styles and trends provides ample opportunities for choice. The country style that came from the West is gaining great popularity among domestic homeowners. There is no pomp and pretentiousness in it, which is so abundant in most modern buildings, on the contrary, country music harmoniously combines comfort and simplicity.
Country style in the design of the facades of private houses
С English "country" (country) is translated as a locality, country, village.
In architecture, this is how several ethnic trends are denoted, united by a rustic style - uncomplicated and maximally functional. It is characterized by a lack of luxury, the use of natural materials (mainly stone and wood), the practicality of every detail and a small amount of decor.
Country houses are distinguished by warm shades
You can define country style by the following criteria:
The facade of a country-style cottage
The building itself can be large, two-storey, with a complex roof, or have very modest size and simple gable roof. The walls are laid out of stone or brick, very often a solid wood sheathing is mounted on top.
Country-style finishing options
The architectural form and color of the facade largely depend on the direction, of which the country style has several:
Ranch, wood trim
Large spacious buildings under a hipped roof, white or just light walls, a minimum of decorative elements. The external decoration of the facade is mainly made of wood;
The gable roof has wide ledges, the terrace and balcony are fenced with wooden railings;
Wooden log house - Russian style of construction
Sometimes in one building 2-3 directions can be combined and even different styles, but such experiments are not always successful. If you plan to independently do country-style facade decoration, choose the direction that best matches the architecture of your home.
Since wooden elements are the most typical for country, let's consider them in more detail - what they are, where they are located, in what quantity. No less important is the material from which these elements are made.
The facades of most country houses are sheathed with wood. Sheathing can be solid and lattice, often only the upper floor is trimmed with wood. For cladding, lining, plank, block house and unedged board are used, which is usually attached with an overlap.
The wood is used only hard deciduous and coniferous species, resistant to weathering. Materials must be treated with protective compounds, thanks to which the wood finish serves for years. With the help of sheathing, you can stylize almost any country house, the main thing is to choose the right finish in color and complement the exterior with other elements of the selected style
It is even easier to stylize housing in the German country - half-timbered house. For this, false beams are attached to the facade, which form a certain geometric pattern. Very often, the beams are replaced with a natural board: the wood is impregnated with antiseptics and painted in a dark color.
If we compare wood sheathing and decorating with beams, then the second method is much more profitable, since less material is required. The beams are attached to the facade with a pitch of 40-100 cm, depending on the pattern, and can also be located only on the second floor. For such a stylization, houses of the correct shape with plastered light walls are best suited, although red brick buildings in some cases look good
Shutters and trims
These products are the most decorative elements in the design of the facade. For country style, the most characteristic are wooden shutters with horizontally positioned slats like blinds. Although in the Russian direction, preference is given to solid structures, and not lattice.
Such shutters, if they are made of solid wood, and not knocked down like a shield, are usually decorated with carvings made in various techniques. The appearance of platbands also largely depends on the direction of the style. For example, in Canadian and American country these are roughly processed boards of predominantly dark color, in the English and French direction the platbands are very neat and painted white, in Russian they are carved
These small elements serve to support horizontal beams, eaves, roof slopes and at the same time decorate the under-roof space. As a rule, they represent a piece of board in the form of a right-angled triangle with a figured cut of the end edge. Thin consoles are usually decorated with openwork carvings, thicker consoles are simply painted and varnished.
You can make them yourself, but this requires the appropriate tools and skills in working with wood, so it is much easier to buy them. But attaching consoles to the facade does not require any special skill and is very simple. Consoles are located on the corners of the house, on pillars, under all protruding elements of the facade - balconies, roofs of terraces, ceilings of the second floor. They are fastened with a step of 60-100 cm, depending on the weight of the structures being held and the thickness of the consoles themselves
In addition, various wooden cornices, pillars, supports, lattice railings are used for country styling , decorative crafts of ethnic orientation. The more complex the architecture of the building, the more elements you need to pick up.
The most successful in this respect are houses with open terraces, as well as with a balcony or a protruding second floor. Here it is enough to install simple wooden columns as props and mount horizontal railings from boards.
The most striking characteristic feature of the rustic style is the reference to ethnic motives in the exterior decoration of the home
To decorate the facade of the house in the chosen style, you can invite a professional designer, which will cost a lot of money, or do the work yourself. Most of the country-style elements are easy to make and install with your own hands. All that is required for this is a good tool, high-quality wood and maximum effort.
Wood cladding is the most time-consuming process, but this is the most effective way to style a home in a country style. An unedged board is best suited for this, which, unlike the newfangled planken or block house, gives the facade a very rustic, cozy look. The cladding is suitable both for brick houses and for buildings made of aerated blocks, shell rock, adobe and other materials.
High-quality facing of the house with unedged board
First of all, you need to decide which wood should be used so that the cladding does not have to be changed after a couple years old.The most practical is larch, whose dense wood is resistant to the effects of mold fungi and putrefactive microorganisms, almost does not deform from temperature changes, and has a beautiful cut pattern.
The only negative is the high price. Alternatively, pine and spruce are cheaper, although not as resistant to harmful effects.
To extend the life of this wood, protective impregnations must be used.

Materials for work:
The walls of the facade are carefully prepared for cladding: decorative elements, platbands, lighting fixtures and everything that may interfere with the work are removed.
Cleaning the old facade
Cleaned from dirt, inspect for cracks and other damage. All detected defects are eliminated with cement mortar.
Step 2. The timber is cut to the height of the walls, then impregnated with a protective composition together with the boards and laid out in a well-ventilated place to dry.
Step 3. Apply 2-3 layers of coating waterproofing to the walls, observing the time intervals specified in the instructions. Each layer must dry completely, only then the quality of waterproofing will be high. The composition is applied with a wide brush from top to bottom, masonry seams are especially carefully processed. There should be no untreated areas, gaps, sagging on the surface.

Step 4. Mount the vertical crate. The first to install the corner posts, controlling their location by level. First, holes are drilled in the brickwork for dowels with a step of 30-40 cm vertically and at a distance of 20-25 mm from the corner line. Next, the bars are screwed on, and between them a fishing line or a strong thread is pulled, which will serve as a guide when installing the remaining racks.
This will help to fix all the elements of the battens in one plane. Be sure to fill the pieces of timber around the perimeter of windows and at the doors, for additional fastening of the trim around the openings.
Assembling the wooden battens
Step 5. Begin to attach the trim from the bottom up. To give the lower board the necessary slope, gaskets made of wood scraps are attached at the very bottom of the wall.
All trimmings should be of the same thickness and be placed every 20-30 cm. Instead of spacers, you can use long strips of suitable thickness, while the fastening step is increased to 50-60 cm.A board is laid on top, level it horizontally, nailed to the sheathing bars. Nails are driven in at a distance of 20-30 mm from the top edge of the board. Each subsequent board is laid with an overlap of 30-40 mm and is nailed in the same way.
Scheme of overlapping wall cladding
Step 6. After finishing the cladding, you must close the corners. The easiest way is to fill boards with a width of 250-300 mm on top. The boards are placed vertically, along the edges of adjacent walls, and are very tightly joined together.
The corners are made up of boards stuffed vertically over the skin
After that, all joints are filled with polyurethane sealant, the excess of which must be immediately removed from the skin surface.
The final stage is the application of a topcoat, which is used as wood varnish or paint.

Fachwerk style decoration
To decorate the facade in the German country style, first of all, you need to choose the right boards. They must be of good quality, of the same cross-section, and of hardwood. Thin bars and slats will not give the desired effect, the boards should look massive, so take lumber at least 150 mm wide and 30-40 mm thick.
All finishing works are carried out on the finished facade, that is, the surface should already be plastered and painted.
If you plan to finish on a new brickwork, all defects are eliminated, the joints must be sewn.
Step 1. A sketch of the future layout of the boards on the wall is drawn on a sheet of paper in order to find the best option.

Next, markings are performed on the facade itself according to the sketch and the exact length of all elements, as well as the angles of inclination, are calculated.
Finishing the facades of half-timbered houses
According to measurements, boards are sawn, the ends of those that will be located at an angle, be sure to number each segment. The workpieces are treated 2-3 times with a toning antiseptic, until the wood acquires the desired color, and dry well.

Step 3. Fixing the elements is done in accordance with the sketch. They take one element, apply it to the wall, mark the drilling places for fasteners.
After drilling through the wall, insert the dowels, reapply the board and fix it with screws.

The corners are closed with logs
For such a finish to look aesthetically pleasing, the boards must be fastened very carefully, especially at the joints, excluding the slightest gaps. The presence of gaps between the elements will spoil the appearance of the facade, in addition, water will flow into them and snow will clog, which will lead to rapid damage to the wood.

Since country style is primarily associated with Western countries, consider manufacturing and installation as an example horizontal shutters made of wood, so popular in Europe and America. Anyone with basic skills in carpentry can make them.
Wooden window shutters
You will need:
Step 1. The window opening is measured from the outside, after which the timber for the frame is cut. There should be 8 sections - 4 for each shutter.
Workpieces are laid out on a flat surface in the form of a frame, each segment is numbered. Then, at the ends of the horizontal bars, two holes are drilled for dowels on each side, and the same holes are made in the vertical bars from the inside at the edges.
Step 3. Take the side segments and from the inside with a pencil mark the location of the inclined grooves into which the strips will be inserted. The dimensions of the grooves must correspond to the cross-section of the strips, the angle of inclination is 35 degrees.
The distance between the grooves is 1.5-2 cm. With the help of a milling tool, grooves are made according to the marking.
Step 4. The sash is assembled: the dowels are smeared with glue and inserted into the frame sidewalls, then glue is applied to the edges of the planks and inserted into the grooves.
The last to bait the upper and lower crossbars, carefully join all the parts and press firmly. For reliability, you can clamp the frame with clamps for several hours so that the glue sets.

Step 5. When both leaves are ready, you need to attach hinges to them. To do this, the shutters are laid flat on a flat surface, the loops are tried on to the upper and lower crossbar, and the attachment points are marked with a pencil.
Next, drill holes for the screws and screw on the hinges.
Step 6. Attach the sash to the window opening, align vertically, mark location of fasteners on the window frame. Having screwed the fittings, they hang the sash and check the ease of movement. The other half is hung up in the same way.
To highlight the chosen style, it is advisable to paint the shutters in a dark color so that they contrast with the trim. Platbands should be the same color as the shutters, but the window frame can be left light.

Decorative carved platbands
It is also not very difficult to make platbands, although some skill is required here. In order for these elements to become a decoration of the facade, it is advisable to use a pattern for cutting patterns, which can be purchased in a store or made yourself if you have the ability to draw.
|Manufacturing steps||Process description|
Accurately measure the width and the height of the window opening.
Take dry flat boards of good quality with a thickness of 10-30 mm. Cut lines are marked on the boards and the material is cut out according to measurements
The workpieces are laid on a flat surface, a template is placed on top and the drawing is carefully traced with a pencil
Cutting out the workpieces
According to the drawing, using a jigsaw, cut out everything unnecessary. The edges of the workpieces and internal cuts are sanded with emery paper
Protective processing of platbands
Finished platbands are impregnated with a protective composition, dried, painted or varnished at will
Platbands with their own hands
For the installation of platbands, you will need galvanized nails up to 75 mm long. They take the platband, put it tightly to the front of the window box, level it vertically. If the windows open outward, the platband is moved from the opening by 5-20 mm to the side.
After that, it is nailed directly to the window frame along its entire length every 40-50 cm. The heads of the nails must be well sunk into the wood.
How to install wooden platbands on windows
The described methods of wood finishing will help you independently change the style of the facade, give your home a fashionable and aesthetic view. The most important thing is not to overdo it with the decor, because the country style does not tolerate excess. And much more depends on the quality of execution, and even roughly processed parts must be fastened as accurately as possible.
