Often, the balconies of multi-storey buildings, although they retain their functionality, look rather unsightly. This is especially true for buildings erected in the 20th century, when utilitarianism was given more attention than the aesthetics of the exterior (the so-called Khrushchev and Stalinist buildings). To make the balcony more aesthetic and graceful without spending too much money, you can use siding as the main material for the exterior cladding.

How to care for vinyl siding
An additional advantage of the material is its favorable cost.
You can carry out installation work in any season, without limiting yourself because of the cold or heat.
Important! Siding has low frost resistance, therefore, in regions with cold climates, it cannot be used without thermal insulation.
Comparative table of siding characteristics of different manufacturers
There are three main types of siding, based on the manufacturing technology.
With proper processing, the wood will not rot. However, this material has a drawback: it is prone to ignition.

Vinyl siding is commonly used for balcony cladding. It can have a single color, textures are also offered that imitate any material - for example, wood.
There are other types of siding (cement, aluminum, etc.
), but these three are the most commonly used.
Table. Comparative characteristics of popular types of siding.
|Type of siding||Thickness, mm||Service life, years||Durability of external coating, years|| Extra care |
|Vinyl|| 0. |
|50||50|| not needed |
|Steel||0.8-2.0||50||10|| not needed |
Thus, it is quite obvious why vinyl is usually preferred: such siding being quite thin, durable and unpretentious.
Selection of tools and building materials
To prepare for covering the balcony with siding, you will need:
Calculation of siding on the balcony
It is also necessary to select the actual siding and fittings for it:
Additional elements for the installation of vinyl siding
Timber dry planed 50x50 mm
Fasteners for timber
Galvanized self-tapping screws for metal
Primer for metal surfaces Alpina Grundierung für Metall
Care must be taken when preparing, especially when work is in progress on the second, third floor or higher. By properly preparing the balcony for finishing, you can get a good result and avoid any risks. The tool must be of high quality, tested.
Note! It is better to purchase consumables from a trusted supplier, leaving a stock of about 10% just in case (if the work is carried out for the first time, then you can leave 20%).
Important! It is possible to sheathe only those balconies, the fencing of which is made of metal gratings, on your own. In this case, all work is carried out from the inside, which increases the safety of installation.For cladding balconies with concrete walls, it is better to hire specialists who have the appropriate equipment.
Metal balcony frame
Preparing the balcony for cladding
Before you start cladding the balcony with siding, you need to carefully prepare the balcony.
Step 1. Free the balcony from any personal belongings occupying the space. Clean up, sweep out debris and dust.
Remove the old cladding, windows and window frames, any decor.
Removing the balcony cladding
Step 3. Inspect the balcony cladding and main structures for damage and wear to estimate the scale of work.
Step 4. Check the condition of the fence.
If it is worn out or damaged, it is better to dismantle it and replace it with a new one (for this it is enough to take a grinder and cut down the rusted metal structures). If this is a metal lattice in an acceptable condition, then it is enough to use a channel and strengthen it.
The parapet needs to be reinforced and colored
Step 5. Brush the metal fence and then apply to it anti-corrosion coating.
Clean the concrete base of the balcony from cracked cement.
Step 7. Fill cracks in concrete with fresh mortar. If the damage is severe, place the battens around the perimeter to reinforce the structure.
Some operations should be given additional attention so that the result does not disappoint and does not lead to the need for an early re-repair in the future.
Let us consider in more detail the installation of the battens, the lower and upper tiers of the beams, the corners of the sheathing and our own siding. These are operations that most often cause difficulties when carrying out work independently.
Step 1. The lathing is made of wooden planks, between which there should be a small distance - no more than 30-40 cm.
Before using the timber for the lathing, it is necessary to treat it with an antiseptic that protects against rotting, fungus, mold.

Mixtures must be selected taking into account that they are suitable for work in a residential area, do not pose a threat to human life and pets
Step 2. Special attention you need to pay the upper part of the crate - the place where it is fastened to the wall. Metal rods are best suited for reliable fastening. They must be attached to the wall surface and to the timber with self-tapping screws.
Fasteners must be of high quality so that the crate does not lose its strength due to the static load.
Install the lathing for covering the balcony with siding
The lathing should be thinner than the thermal insulation material used on the balcony.

Step 3. Plates of insulating material are laid under the frame, as required have electrical wiring. It is necessary to ensure that communications are not damaged during installation.
Balcony cladding with siding with insulation
The frame can be metal, but in this case an additional insulation layer is required. Which insulation is best to choose, the owner of the balcony decides for himself, based on the financial capabilities and technical characteristics of the insulating material. The easiest option is mineral wool, but there are also more modern solutions.
Thermal insulation of the balcony with foam when sheathing with siding (option with a metal frame)
Step 4. Top to the insulation is applied with a protective membrane and fastened with self-tapping screws around the perimeter.
Balcony insulation scheme
Step 5. If the balcony has a concrete base, then you need to fix the bottom of the crate with construction glue and with the help of clamps, connect to the rods. When choosing an adhesive composition, the temperature conditions in the region are taken into account.
It is important that the joints between the panels must be at least 5 mm - then, even when expanding under the influence of temperature, the panels will not deform.
It is better to turn the self-tapping screws back 1/4 of a turn - also to prevent deformation.
Preparation of the lower tier begins with the fact that the beam is laid on the balcony, and the side beams are nailed to the front surface. If a woodworking tool is available, a tenon joint can be used.
The timber must be attached to the concrete base with silicate glue, and then the void must be foamed from the inside of the balcony. The timber is additionally fastened with dowels if there are doubts about the strength of the balcony structure.
Setting the lower horizontal belt
Important! The lower tier of the beams must have a height of at least 7.
When mounting the lower horizontal tier, one or two rows of beams are nailed onto the lower beam - a total height of 8-9 cm is obtained, and this is quite enough.
Next, you need to calculate how many strips of siding will be required for installation. Then you need to attach from one to three rows of beams to the enclosing railing so that their upper edge is higher than the edge of the sheathing, by about 1 cm. The first beam is best fixed with self-tapping screws, the rest of the beams can be nailed from above.
Usually the installation of the upper tier takes less time than the installation of the lower one.
Usually siding fittings are sold together with the coating itself, so there is no difficulty in selecting it. To mount the corner pieces, it is enough to cut triangular thrust bearings from the casing.The footrests must be heated and bent at an angle of 90 ° so that the short sides form shelves under the lower edges of the corners.
Installation of corners
The footrests are fixed with screws, and the corner element is installed on the shelves.
With the help of screws, you need to screw the thrust bearing to both tiers of the beams - top and bottom.
Step 1. First you need to install the starter bar by attaching it to the bottom tier of the beams with the lock down.
This can be done with screws or nails.
Thanks to the elongated grooves in the details, the siding will hold resiliently, not rigidly, so it will not swell or break off the fasteners. Using a nail or a metal marking pencil, you need to make a recess in the middle of the groove for the screw, and then screw it in with a drill or screwdriver. Then the screw should be unscrewed 1/4 turn and slightly loosened. There is another option though.
Instructions for installing starting profiles
Correct installation of nails or screws in siding mounting holes
Attaching the starting profile
When the starting strip is fixed, you need to lower the bottom panel until the lock clicks, and then pull it up so that the hook enters the lock. On the railing bars, mark where the top edge of the panel is. After that, the siding strip will need to be unhooked and removed, and the second tier of lathing beams should be attached according to the marks.

Cutting the siding
Step 3. Holes must be made in the railing bars in order to fix the beams later using bolts or self-tapping screws.
After completing the installation of the second tier of beams, it is required to lower the siding strip again along the grooves of the corner parts and click the lock on the initial strip. Since there are already holes for the screws, it will be easier to fix it: just screw in the screws and then unscrew them about 1/4 of a turn.

Step 4. In the same way, you should fix the remaining tiers of the battens and siding strips. The upper tier should be flush with the casing.
To make the structure stronger, you can supplement the horizontal beams with vertical ones, thereby strengthening the entire lathing.
Installation of siding strips
For comparison: vinyl siding, like metal, can be used immediately. Wooden siding must be pre-treated with an antiseptic and auxiliary impregnations.
The gaps between the siding panels must be measured with millimeter accuracy so that they adhere to each other as tightly as possible, without deforming during temperature changes.According to GOST and other parameters, siding must be fastened based on the following standards.
Table. Required gap width depending on air temperature.
|Air temperature during installation, ° С|| Gap width, mm |
|Below +5|| 11-12 |
|+ 5… + 10||10|
|+ 10… + 15||9|
|+ 15… + 20||8|
Balcony, trimmed siding
Traditionally, siding is mounted horizontally, but you can see examples of vertical fastening of the material. This solution has no disadvantages; it will be enough to carry out the necessary measurements along the width and height of each surface in order to select panels with the appropriate overall parameters.
Fastening of vertical siding
Strength and correctness of fasteners comes first in vertical installation. Otherwise, if allowances remain, a strong wind will create an increased load on the skin, blowing into the cracks, and also drive rain moisture into them and break the insulation.
Pay attention! Specially produced vertical siding does not require additional perforation for condensate drainage, unlike horizontal siding.
Balcony clad with vertical siding
The work on cladding the balcony with siding can be done completely independently, but you should not forget about the advice given by experts.
After all, they will be located on the outside of the balcony, and therefore the street temperature is relevant for them. The panels will take on their natural size, and it will be much easier to fix them - after the installation, the material will not deform.
Do not pull the screws close to the panel. Leave a gap of approximately 1mm between the head of the fastener and the siding panel.
Safety belt UP-01
You can also use a tape to alert passers-by. Bypassing the work site, they will not be affected by pieces of concrete or any other debris falling down.
Do-it-yourself installation of facade panels
Here you can find step-by-step instructions for installing facade panels with your own hands! We also recommend reading an article about decorating a balcony with clapboard from the inside with your own hands.
In any independently carried out work, you can make a number of mistakes that can affect the result in the most detrimental way. The most common and, moreover, fatal mistakes for plating are given below.

Attaching the siding
If you avoid the listed errors, then the siding will hold firmly enough and retain its technical properties for long period. The result will delight for a very long time, you will not need to carry out repeated repairs, or spend money on attracting specialists.
