Dent on parquet, wood and furniture - how to fix them

Dent on parquet, wood and furniture - how to fix them How to remove dents on furniture, parquet and wood do it yourself

How often our furniture or new parquet deteriorates ... In order not to have to redo everything and spend a lot of money, you need to be able to correct mistakes yourself.

The main thing is that you do not give in to panic, and, if possible, contact a specialist who can solve such a problem.

It doesn't matter how to remove the dent on the floor, as long as you can do it yourself. You can even eliminate coating defects yourself, at home.

The main thing is that the burnt spots, dents or scratches are not very rough and in small quantities.

Types of defects = scale of the problem

It should be understood that the resistance of the coating to external influences, including the mechanical type of damage, will be influenced by the wood species, which was used for manufacturing. The more stable and more expensive the parquet is, the less likely it will be to dent even after years of active use.

It is obvious that a parquet board (in comparison with solid or block parquet) is not so resistant to mechanical damage, and therefore is much more likely to undergo repair work.

The reasons for the vulnerability are:

  • Soft layers located at the bottom.
  • Relatively small face layer.
  • Far from the most stable types of wood, which are the basis.

The most durable materials can be considered a parquet board, which is resistant not only to dents, but also to moisture, as well as temperature extremes.

No matter how durable the coating is, it cannot give a 100% guarantee of protection against various kinds of influences.

However, regardless of the type of wood, no type of parquet or parquet boards can be insured against damage over time. ...

scratches and dents are the most common problem, and depending on their type, you should choose the most effective way to solve the problem.

So, the most common types of dents are those that are formed as a result of contact between the floor and the heels of women's shoes. Thin and sharp, quite often with metal heels, heels strongly and mercilessly spoil the wood, violate the integrity of the varnish or even oil coating, and leave unsightly depressions on the surface.

Yes, heel marks are far from the most pleasant phenomenon, but everything is fixable. You can get rid of them by local repair work in the event that there are few traces, or by scraping, if the surface is disfigured everywhere.

It is worth understanding the fact that it will be much easier to restore a parquet board with your own hands at home than in a public building, where the scale of the disaster is completely different. Small dents can be removed even without the aid of a sander.

Ways to solve the problem of damaged parquet surface

So, depending on how deep the dent is on the parquet floor, you can try

remove defects in the following ways:

  • Treat the damaged area, loop and then grind, at the end you will need to apply varnish.
  • Replace damaged boards and install new ones.
  • Use special camouflage compounds.

If you want to repair a dent on a parquet board exactly according to the third method, then most often mastic is used, which visually resembles a putty mixture. Everything is realized in different versions and packages. The most convenient way would be to use a special felt-tip pen, with which it will be possible to cover up the dent, and then grind the damaged area.

Dent on parquet, wood and furniture - how to fix them An interesting and proven method, which has been used for more than a dozen years, is to prepare a mixture at home , which consists of a varnish composition and crushed parquet dust (you can make it from a spare die).

This mixture is needed to process dents, scratches and chips, and then the surface will need to be sanded.

The proportion of such a mixture will be 4 to 1, i.e. 4 measures of varnish and 1 measure of dust.

Another easy way to remove a dent on a parquet is to mask dents and other minor imperfections with epoxy glue that matches the color of the wood. In conclusion, I would like to say that there are certain tree species that are practically not susceptible to damage as a result of mechanical stress.

We are talking specifically about oak parquet or products made of ash. Choosing them will simplify the operation of the floor surface, and will also minimize the risk of premature failure.

But the parquet made of cherry or even birch is a potential "field" for the appearance of defects of various levels of complexity. Even a children's car, which accidentally falls to the floor, can leave a dent on such a floor surface. It is for this reason that they are installed in special rooms where there can be no mechanical damage.

Fixing dents in wood

Wooden surfaces can be damaged in several ways, for example, something can fall on it and leave a dent. But do not despair over such a nuisance, because there are several simple and reliable ways to solve the problem.

How to remove a dent in wood

The sequence is as follows:

  1. You need an iron, rag or old towel, water. The place where the dent remains should be thoroughly steamed with an iron, covered with a towel and steamed on top again. Further, the dent must be smoothed until the moment when all the moisture is completely corrected.

This will smooth out the dent.

  2. There is another way for shallow damage - we use water.Apply liquid to the dent, and then cover everything with a rag. Water will fill in the irregularities and smooth them out.
  3. A very effective way to remove dents is to use wax.

It can be bought in a special building market, and the color should be chosen based on the shade of the wood (piece of furniture).

  4. A simple and straightforward way to mask stains is to use felt-tip pens. In this case, we are talking about special markers, which we mentioned earlier.
  5. Dent on parquet, wood and furniture - how to fix them The furniture touch is an excellent tool for masking small scratches. It is a tube that will be closed with a lid with a brush, somewhat reminiscent of nail polish.

You need to apply in one or a couple of layers until the defect is completely eliminated. Remove the excess with a plastic card, and the surface itself must be polished with felt or a soft cloth. It is difficult to choose the ideal color, and therefore you should finish painting the missing texture lines with a standard felt-tip pen or furniture varnish. For this, it is best to use a spray varnish, which is applied evenly and does not leave a visible edge of the composition.

  6. An acrylate or acrylic filler is an option that works best for deep dents.

The putty should be applied with a plastic or rubber spatula to the surface of the furniture, and after complete drying, sand it first with the finest sandpaper ("zero"), and then with felt. If the colors do not match, the spot can be tinted with a felt-tip pen or even a marker, but it is better to choose a composition that will be 1 tone darker, because the light spot will stand out more against the general background.

  7. Walnut is more of a folk method when there is a shallow scratch. A half of the nut should be used to thoroughly treat the problem area, and then you can sand with a soft cloth to remove the oily sheen. Alternatively, you can use pecan nuts.

It should be immediately clarified that this method will not help out in the presence of deep irregularities, but only make invisible small scratches that do not go deep into the structure. Moreover, folk craftsmen suggest using a weak iodine solution for dark wood. But remember that this does not level the surface, but only visually hides the flaw.

  8. You know how to remove a dent on furniture, but what to do with a chip? This is where PVC or melamine edging will help you. Before restoration, the old edge should be heated with a damp cloth and iron, and then removed, and the cut should be sanded.

After restoration, glue on a new edge that matches the color better. Fortunately, ribbons in many shades are always on sale. This will allow you to renovate the site while giving the furniture a fresh look. Moreover, traces of repair work will not be so visible if you cover everything with new tape, which has a hot melt base.It will not be difficult to stick it on with an ordinary household iron, but without steam, and all that remains is to put a dry cotton cloth.

Please note, that the most serious damage is cracks that appear on furniture made of MDF or chipboard only if this type of product is used improperly, i.e. and sudden changes in temperature and humidity. In this case, you can use radical methods like putty or even hard furniture wax, or you can use other, easier methods that use internal resources.

  1. PVA glue, which contains natural substances, perfectly copes with the task of sealing a crack on fiber boards.

To do this, draw the substance into a syringe, and with a needle inject it deep into the cleavage. It must be applied carefully, strictly on the crack, so that there are no bumps. Then tighten the part with a clamp, and wait until it dries completely. The adhesive composition will saturate the board, and it will begin to swell in the right place, and the glue particles will hold all the parts together. After drying, carry out detailed repairs and repair the crack in the same way as to hide a scratch.

  2. Mayonnaise. As strange as it may sound, a fatty egg yolk can do wonders. Naturally, if the crack is not through. Apply mayonnaise gently and only on the crack, and do not touch the adjacent areas, because otherwise you will need to remove grease stains. The composition will remain in the problem area at night, and remove the excess and polish everything with a soft cloth.

If necessary, mask the scratch or unevenness with furniture wax or other suitable material.

Whichever of the following methods you choose, remember that it is better to start trying it on an inconspicuous area, for example, on the inside of a drawer or countertop. So you will be able to save the family budget from additional expenses, and yourself from the hassle of looking for new means of disguise. But what to do with a dent on a varnished surface?

Removing defects from a varnished surface

Everything is much more complicated here, and a special approach will be required. But still, when a dent appears on the lacquered surface, there is no need to despair and throw away damaged pieces of furniture.

In order to solve this problem, there is a special oil varnish. It is sold in hardware stores and furniture stores.

How to use the tool? The varnish should be applied to the dent and if deep it should be applied in two coats. But the second layer should be applied only after the first dries. After drying, sand and polish the damaged area.

Thanks to the use of such a tool, pieces of furniture will again have a beautiful appearance, and shine with a varnish coating, as before.

No matter how new and high-quality your furniture is, it can also be easily damaged. For example, if you are transporting an item from one apartment to another, or you decide to change the environment. Or a heavy object has fallen onto the surface, damaging the coating. In this case, do not despair and do not throw away the item, because buying new furniture is always more expensive.

To get rid of the problem, it will be enough to use one of the above tools, which are simple and effective.
