In modern construction, thanks to the improvement of technologies and building materials, a huge variety of architectural forms and solutions prevails. But basically all the same, in the matter of choosing a roof structure, builders focus on practicality.
The attic space may well be equipped as an attic, which will significantly increase the usable area without building 2 floors. A full-fledged room will turn out in the attic. And here, in order to make normal walls, and not slopes, the best option would be to install a domed octagonal roof, which is called the Sudeikin roof.
A book published in 1914 by the talented architect G.M.Sudeikin, which contains a huge variety of design solutions, including drawings of the famous roofs. She gained her popularity after the release of this book. Was presented in five different projects of timber and concrete houses.
The main difference of this roof is that there is no rafter system in it. Its frame is a mullion-beam structure supported by a central post. The roof has eight triangles, 4 of them are pointed downwards, and the rest upwards.
Important: Such a roof can only be built on a square structure and allows ninety percent of the space under it to be used. In theory, such a roof can be arranged for a rectangular house, but as practice shows, this is quite difficult and will take a long time.
Sudeikin proposed many original projects for building houses. He created manuals containing accurate calculations and drawings, relevant to this day.
In one of his albums, the architect posted a comparative table, which proves that such a roof allows you to create the largest attic space with the least material consumption.
Thanks to the developments of Sudeikin, modern designers have calculated and thought out a domed roof with six sides, without support in the center. That allows you to almost completely organize a living room in the under-roof space.
The following advantages of the roof are distinguished:
Disadvantages include:
Here, coatings such as ondulin or bituminous tiles will be most suitable.
You are planning a balcony, this will also be problematic and part of the veranda will be open. Also, when installing a drainage system, you will need the help of a specialist in the selection of pipes necessary for the parameters. Many more gutters will be used here than, for example, on a gable view with the same area.
Professionals argue that the main drawback of the Sudeikin roof is that during its installation it is not possible to use a typical project.
Today there are not enough experienced specialists in this field.
The Sudeikin roofing system assembly project consists of the following stages:
Note : The center support holds all load-bearing boards. It is higher in height than other racks, due to which they get the same angle of the architect.
Important: When installing, it is imperative that these boards go beyond the walls , thereby forming an overhang of the cornice.
If this roof is installed on a building made of stone, the upper part of the facade of the building is made of wall material. The beams are attached to the gables with studs; waterproofing must be provided between the wooden surface and the stone one.
Sudeikin emphasized that during construction it is necessary to use extremely powerful fasteners - screws, nails 100, 200, depending on the material.
Important: When installing each fastener, the structure must be checked for strength.Otherwise, your roof will last no more than twenty years.
The architect intended to use galvanized iron for the roof, but now there is a huge variety of coating materials. Some consider soft shingles or small piece material to be the most suitable for such a roof, since the sheet view will need to be trimmed and adjusted. Despite the advantage of soft tiles, they are quite expensive material.
In practice, ondulin, metal tiles and metal profiles are excellent for covering a multifaceted roof. With the right approach and the necessary calculations of the required amount, there will be practically no waste.
You yourself decide whether to use a project from the past, but none of those who chose such a roof for their home did not regret it.
