Directors Message

Welcome to all who are interested in joining the Blue and Black Brigade!

We really have something special here in the band and colorguard program at West Hills. Participation is physically demanding, requires many hours of rehearsal, unwavering individual accountability, dedication, and intense focus. But for all that work, there are seemingly endless rewards for our students. These students learn invaluable life skills, build confidence through performance, make new friends (or even find their best friends), learn techniques and skills that can lead to scholarships, and have a great time while doing it. Our bond in the Blue and Black Brigade is deeper than a team. We are the Wolfpack, we are the Blue and Black Brigade, we are a family of friends.

Everyone who would like to be a member of the marching band and colorguard must enroll in the respective course. For both band and colorguard, membership is a year long commitment. When marching band/colorguard ends, concert band/winterguard begins.

Typically, the fall season is the busiest for these groups. For the 2019-2020 school year we are planning attend 4-5 field show competitions in addition to supporting our Wolfpack at home football games, and rehearsing 3x a week outside of school hours.

Competition days are long, but the excitement and adrenaline is almost palpable. There is no feeling that can compare to being on the field in competition with your peers in the Blue and Black Brigade.

Rehearsals for both groups happen on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Tuesday/Thursday rehearsals are in the evening, and Saturdays are 9:00 am – 12:00 pm.

Band Camp is held in the 2 weeks before school starts. The 2019-2020 Band Camp ran from 7/29-8/2 and 8/5-8/9, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Attendance is mandatory and necessary. Our first week of camp centers on marching technique and memorizing our fall show music. The second week is learning the first movement drill, and putting the entirety (drill plus music) on the field. It is very difficult for students to catch up to their peers if they have missed learning the entirety of the first movement during Band Camp.

We accept all students who are motivated to learn and passionate about music, no matter the level of experience!
