When is the best time to install plastic windows?

It is best to carry out replacement of windows from May to September, as well as installation windows are best done in dry weather.

Installation of plastic windows can be carried out in winter, but if the outside air temperature is not less than minus five degrees.

Otherwise, you need to install a special heat shield.

It is also not recommended to install windows and extreme heat. A very important point when changing windows is not only their installation, but also accurate measurements and accurate selection.

Measuring windows

Before purchasing a new plastic window, you need to measure the window opening and, according to the data received, buy a finished window or place an order for the manufacture of a window. When you order a window according to your size, it will fit perfectly into the opening of your window.

Ready-made windows are made according to standard sizes and therefore it may not fit in the opening of your window as it should.

Measurement procedure

So, window measurement should be done like this :

  1. First measure the window opening in width, from the wall. If there are slopes on the window, then they are removed to make an accurate measurement.
  2. After that, measurements of the opening height are made, while taking into account the type of window sill. In the event that the house is panel, then usually the window sill is part of the slab and therefore the plastic window will be installed on it.

But if the window sill is removable, then measurements are taken from the beginning of the plate.

  3. Then, as far as possible, measurements of the depth of the window opening are made and for this they remove part of the plaster or remove the strips from the sides of the window.
  4. Measurements from the outside are made as follows, first they measure the width and height of the opening, then remove a little plaster, then begin to measure the depth of the opening between the window or wall.

If possible, before measuring, remove the ebb and see if there is a border on the bottom or the surface is straight.

The window should not be closely inserted into the opening, there should be a small gap between the window and the opening, as it needs to expand or contract, this will depend on temperature changes.

Requirements for gaps

The minimum dimensions of the gaps should be as follows :

  • Window up to 1m 20 cm indent be in 15 mm;
  • Window up to 2 m 20 cm indent is 20 mm;
  • Window up to 3 m indent is 25mm.

When you are replacing a window, you must take into account that the window must enter the opening for the window, only for a certain number of centimeters. This is necessary so that the double-glazed window is not in the wall and in order to make the slopes.

All measurements have been made, all the nuances have been taken into account, and as a result, the required size of the window profile has been obtained. Now you can go to the company and order a window or take a ready-made one that suits your parameters.

Dismantling the old window and preparing the opening

After you have already bought a window and the weather allows its installation, you can do its installation. It must be borne in mind that all work will be rather dusty, so it is better to remove all things or cover with a film.

After you have done all the preparatory work, start dismantling the old window, and in order to remove the old window, use a chisel, pry bar and hammer.

  1. DIY installation of plastic windows: Step-by-step instructions + Video First, remove the vent or sash, which is smaller.
  2. Then, using a hacksaw or an electric jigsaw, cut the partition between the leaves and pull it out of the frame.

  3. Next, we cut a part of the frame in half, it is best to cut it from below and then remove it.
  4. When the work on dismantling the frame is complete, remove all irregularities with a chisel, hammer or puncher and make grooves on the sides, this is necessary so that the window sill goes slightly into the wall.

Before installing a plastic window, it is necessary to remove dirt from the window opening well and moisten it a little.

Then you can start preparing the window for installation.

Installation of a plastic window

Before installing the window profile, the sash is removed from the window and the double-glazed windows are removed from the blind parts of the window.

Then it is necessary to peel off the protective tapes from the outside of the profile and install the protective caps in the drain holes. We attach fasteners for the mosquito net to the screws.

Thermal insulation of the profile

DIY installation of plastic windows: Step-by-step instructions + Video Some outdated sources do not mention this, but in modern technology, the installation of windows involves insulating the profile. These measures were introduced because even with the correct installation of the windows, moisture formed on them, which should not be at all.Due to this action, all the bad consequences should not be formed.

To ensure that the window profile adheres tightly, the entire perimeter of the profile is glued to the outside of the window opening with a special sealing tape. After that, the side parts of the profile are pasted over with vapor barrier tapes.

A seal made of specialized tape is glued to the upper, side part of the profile and then, if necessary, a starting or expansion profile is attached. After the insulation work has been done, they begin to install the window profile.

There are two types of plastic window fasteners, such as :

  1. On anchors;
  2. On plates.

Which type of attachment is the best cannot be immediately said, therefore, both attachments have their own positive and negative qualities. Fastening is the most important component for installing a plastic window and therefore we will analyze this in more detail.

When choosing a fastener for plastic windows, you must first of all focus on the type of your walls. This means that if the house is brick or panel, then you are not limited in the choice of fasteners. In the event that you decide to install plastic windows in a completely new house or country house, which are built of foam concrete or aerated concrete, then the installation of the window must be done on special mounting plates.

The main disadvantage of fastening windows to anchors is the depressurization of the profile.

As a rule, a profile contains a number of cameras that are separated from each other. Due to these chambers, the window profile keeps the temperature and, accordingly, warm.

If you decide to make an anchor as an attachment, then the profile is drilled through and therefore chambers are depressurized. Also, fastening windows to anchors requires more labor and skill and for this reason such fastening is not suitable for beginners.

If the profile is not fixed correctly, it can be led, and if it does, the window will be damaged.

But the anchorage also has positive qualities, for example, the structure, will be strong. But the negative quality of the mounting plates is that they do not provide good structural strength. But mounting plates are the easiest type of fixing plastic windows. Very often, experts use both types of mounts.

  1. Usually we start fastening from the corner and make the first fastener at a distance of 120-150 mm and then make the next fastener with a distance of 700 mm. Three fasteners are installed on each side.
  2. Before installing the profile in the opening, it is necessary to check all planes using a level, then using wooden blocks it is necessary to raise the profile and adjust it vertically.
  3. Start and adjust vertically from the top of the window opening and raise the profile from below using the materials described above. The next step is to align the profile horizontally.

Fixing the profile in the opening from the side and from above is made of wood blades. After you have done the alignment on all sides, you need to make a profile and if everything is in order, then you can fix it.

  4. If you fix the window profile on the mounting plates, they are first fixed on one dowel with a nail. The next step is to check the window profile using a level and only after that the mounting plate is fixed with a second dowel with a nail.
  5. In the event that the windows are attached to the anchor, then through the holes that were previously made and then using a special tool, make holes in the wall and screw in the anchor without tightening them.

  6. The anchors are not tightened in order to check the level of installation of the window and only then can the anchor be tightened, but very slowly so as not to disturb the balance of the profile. When the profile is fixed, we remove the blades from the wood from the sides and top, and the lower blades remain, because they are the basis of the window profile.

How to install ebbs on plastic windows?

The next step of the work is to install the ebb.

We measure it and use metal scissors to cut the required size, then a special tape is glued to the bottom of the frame, it is needed to protect the seam between the wall and the bottom of the window.

After the tape is glued, a layer of polyurethane foam is applied to it.

Also, a layer of polyurethane foam is applied to the edge of the slab, this is necessary in order to ensure sound insulation and sealing of the ebb. The ebb must go into the grooves of the profile and is attached with self-tapping screws.

Sealing of seams

Then we close the seam between the wall and the window with polyurethane foam (first from one side, then from the other and from above). After the foam has dried, another insulation tape is glued on top of it. On the inside of the window, it is necessary to remove the protective tape and use special linings when installing the glass unit.

Using the strips, hold the glass unit, hammer the strips into the grooves and install the sash, fix it in canopies, then secure the handle and adjust the sash horizontally and vertically. After all the work, a mosquito net is installed.

How to properly install the window sill on plastic windows?

After all the work, we begin to install the window sill.

  • First, fill the bottom assembly seam well with foam, then stick a vapor barrier tape on top of it.
  • Then the blocks of wood are installed on which the window sill will be attached.

  • Wooden blocks must be at least ten centimeters long. The window sill should also be tilted five degrees towards the room, and the window sill should not obscure the battery.
  • It is necessary to check whether the window sill is securely attached and it is necessary to solder it from below and, best of all, with polyurethane foam.

Then it is recommended to put five-liter bottles on the window sill to fix it.

In this article, we told how to install a plastic window and we hope that this information was useful to you.

Good luck and patience!
