DIY linoleum laying on plywood

DIY linoleum laying on plywood Laying linoleum on plywood: technology

Linoleum is one of the most inexpensive and popular materials for floor covering. At the present stage of development in terms of technology, the quality of such a coating has become much better, and many different substances have appeared in the composition of the material, and the varieties of textures and colors are amazing.

Treatment with special formulations makes this type of coating resistant to wear, easy to maintain and hypoallergenic. But in order for linoleum to be laid on a floor surface, a solid, even board is required, even if this is your floor, and at first it seems level.

This applies to flooring from boards, because the elastic linoleum material will repeat all the projections and grooves of the boards, and after a while they will begin to wipe in those places.

Do-it-yourself linoleum laying on plywood can be done inexpensively and simply.

Advantages of plywood over other materials

You can create a suitable base for linoleum by installing a sub-floor using materials such as OSB sheets, fiberboard, chipboard and plywood:

  • Option with plywood. It will be made of veneer sheets glued together by means of certain resins. Veneer is strips of natural wood of different species with a small thickness from 0.1 to 1 cm.

It is collected perpendicular to the fiber direction into sheets with certain dimensions, and most often 2. 44 * 1. 22 meters. The sheet thickness will depend on the thickness of the veneer layer used and the number of layers, at least 3 layers. Thickness can be from 0.

3 to 3 cm. It differs in grade, moisture resistance and quality of finish.

Interestingly, plywood is a lightweight and environmentally friendly material that has a fairly high strength, but it can be easily cut with an electric jigsaw.

  • There are other options. Using fiberboard sheets, you can level worn out wood floors, however, if there are no large defects.

They are very subtle and all the flaws will begin to be visible after a while. In addition, when moisture gets on the fiberboard, bubbles appear, and, when dry, the sheets will not recover their shape. Chipboard sheets deteriorate from moisture, becoming dust, may have toxic harmful substances.

  • Russian-made OSB boards have synthetic additives, which are required in order to improve moisture resistance and strength. Environmentally friendly and water-resistant analogue of chipboard for flooring are very expensive, as well as the Canadian version of OSB slabs.

For a floor type of covering, an OSB plate of the third category and plywood of the FSF building mark would be an ideal option. And from the financial and environmental side - plywood of the FC and FBA brands.

Next, we suggest considering the nuances of installation work.

Features of mounting linoleum on plywood

Linoleum is an elastic material that is capable of showing all the flaws of the base.It can be placed on both concrete and wooden floors.

In order to maintain the appearance and extend the service life of the surface, the surface must be perfect, flat and solid.

When it is required to insulate or level the floor, as one of several options, plywood is used:

  • DIY linoleum laying on plywood If you have a concrete base, it is enough to visually check the condition of the floor. It should be clean and even. Drops of solution on the surface of the screed are polished or knocked off after repair work, even with bricks. You can beat off the excess with a water, laser or simple level of the mark along the common perimeter.

Using a tape measure, it is required to check the plane, and if the front is more than 3-4 cm, then the floor will need to be leveled with a screed. This method is similarly used when the floor is made of reinforced concrete slabs.

  • Next, a waterproofing process is required. There are several types of it, but in this case, it is enough to lay roofing material, gluing the sheets together with mastic, or European roofing material, welding with a blowtorch. The most convenient method is to lay a thick polyethylene film, fastening it together with tape.

  • Plywood is laid on top, the sheets of which need to be sawn into 4 pieces. they do this due to the fact that the solid sheet undergoes large deformation due to temperature changes. For similar reasons, a distance of up to 1 cm is left between the plywood and the wall, and between the pieces themselves, 0.3-0. 4 cm.

First, drill the plywood with a 0.2-0 drill. 3 cm.

  • Further, after laying the plywood on the floor under the linoleum, it is required to lay the sheets on the floor and mark the attachment points on the foundation. After that, remove the plywood and use a punch to drill holes under the dowels with a 0.

6 cm drill. Attach the sheets to the floor in a checkerboard pattern on dowels 0.5 * 6 cm. The hats must be sunk. You can lay plywood on a plank frame with a thickness of 1 cm.

Collect everything in the form of square honeycombs with a step of 0.3-0. 6 meters. Attach to the floor with the same dowels, and fasten together with self-tapping screws. The honeycomb can be filled with insulation, and the plywood joints are placed on the frame in a checkerboard pattern and fastened with nails or self-tapping screws.

The joints should not have more than 2 seams, and parquet mastic or liquid nails can be used as fasteners.

  • If the room has a wooden floor, it will also be subject to visual and technical inspection. Rotten and damp boards must be dismantled. In the presence of a fungal colony or mold, find out the possible cause of the deficiencies. Eliminate it, and the sites of damage are treated with antifungal compounds.

Creaking and loose boards must be nailed or pulled to the logs with self-tapping screws. The length of the fasteners should not be more than the width of the log, so as not to rest against the concrete. When the lags themselves begin to bend, then the floor must be completely interrupted. To do this, dismantle the flooring and strengthen the logs, or, if necessary, replace them with new ones.

Please note that you can attach them to the wall by means of brackets, and then screw them to the concrete with anchor bolts, using lining (for example, from the same fiberboard) or wedges.

After the floor is collected back.

  • Old paint and varnish material must be removed from the boards by warming it up with a construction hairdryer and scraping with a spatula. Curved boards need to be cut off with a plane. For huge slots, special slats are prepared, driven in and polished. Small cracks need to be foamed or filled with mastic, and then putty.

It is allowed to attach plywood to the prepared floor and fasten it with self-tapping screws.

  • The distance between the attachments must be at least 0. 15 meters. When even outwardly the floor is bad, but strong, then it is required to assemble a wooden frame in the same way as in the case of a concrete floor. It is also required to remember that when installing plywood and linoleum on a wood floor, it is required to leave a ventilation hole that prevents condensation from accumulating inside the subfloor.

It needs to be covered with decorative elements at the end of the work.

Let's consider some more nuances

Which one is better to lay

Usually 2 types of plywood are used for flooring:

  • Construction plywood having the FC brand, and its veneer is glued by means of urea resin.
  • FKM plywood made on the basis of melamine resins.

These are the most environmentally friendly options for medium moisture resistance. The higher the resistance to moisture, the more harmful substances they contain.

Plywood can be of four grades, A, B, C and D. Since the visual beauty will be hidden through linoleum, you do not need to spend money on it. But when using low quality varieties, problems may appear that need to be further corrected. For non-sanded plywood, using an adhesive for fastening increases its consumption. Ш2 (sanded on both sides) is expensive for the floor, and Ш1 (sanded on one side only) is what is required.

Plywood must be dried in the room for several days in the "upright" position before installation.

In order to increase the density, you can apply several coats of furniture varnish or impregnate it with an antiseptic. Sheet thickness should be 0.8 cm and more. If necessary, you can lay 2 layers, if the height from ceiling to floor makes it possible to do this without a greater loss of free space.

When plywood is laid on the surface of a log, it is better to take 1.8 cm.

Preparatory stage

To lay linoleum on plywood, it is required to spread the material in a free room with a large area a few days before laying so that it evens out. If this is not possible, then you must first prepare the floor:

  1. DIY linoleum laying on plywood Using a spatula, the inter-tile joints are putty with a special putty for wood.
  2. After it dries (the duration of drying will be indicated on the packaging by the manufacturer), then wipe everything with fine sandpaper or a masking net.

Do not use plaster or cement based mortars to putty the plywood floor, as they will crack.

  3. The entire surface does not need to be coated with mortar as is done for walls or ceilings.
  4. Then thoroughly remove all debris with a vacuum cleaner.
  5. And last of all, you can impregnate the plywood with hot drying oil or a special primer for wood.
  6. All work should be done in a room with a temperature not lower than +18 degrees and humidity should not be higher than 70-80%.

After carefully remove the garbage, bring in linoleum, unfold around the entire perimeter and give it time to lie down.

Now about styling

How to install

An uncomplicated method of laying linoleum on a substrate makes it possible to easily cope with such work:

  • Linoleum, which is lying down (that is, straightened up), is brought into the room and laid on the floor, which has been prepared in advance.
  • Smooth the surface from the center to the edges, allowing the material to distribute properly around the entire perimeter of the room.
  • Use a sharp knife to trim the edges along the walls, taking into account that there may be shrinkage in certain types of linoleum. The trimming for door frames is done very carefully, because the edges will not be covered by anything.

Technical holes are cut to bypass pipes or other types of obstacles.

  • Install the skirting boards, and if there is no opening in the door sill, then at the end of the coating it is necessary to install special sills made of soft metal, which can be bought in advance, along with linoleum.

Now about fastening

How to attach

Fix the linoleum on the plywood base can be done with adhesive, double-sided tape or special double-sided adhesive tape.

Option with adhesive composition. Prepare linoleum using the method described above.

After that, roll half of the roll to the center of the room or fold it in half. It is required to apply the adhesive composition (evenly) to the vacated area using a spatula with teeth. Carefully unfold the linoleum into place using a wood scraper. Do the same with the other half. After that, it is required to roll the entire surface area with a roller from the center to the periphery in order to remove air bubbles that sometimes appear during the execution of work.

Next, let it dry for a day, and then finish installing the baseboards and you can move in. It is advisable to cover the entire area with one piece, and if this is not possible, then two pieces need to be joined together. To do this, throw one segment over the second at a small distance, joining along the figure. The joints are chosen taking into account the future load on the material - the joint will be less rubbed there, and much less will be stepped on it.

Using a long strip, use a sharp knife to cut in the middle of the overlap.

Remove the sections and apply masking tape on top of the seam so as not to stain the surface when gluing. Cut through the tape, take a liquid seal with a needle at the end of the tube, and fill the joint along the total length. After 20 minutes, remove the tape and allow time to dry for welding according to the instructions on the tube. Hot welding. This will require a special.

tool, and the simplest method would be to apply an adhesive composition under the seam, and on top put a flat strip along the total length, pressing it down with something heavy. But this method is only suitable for dense material.

An easier method would be to do the styling with double-sided tape. Stick it with one side on a clean plywood with a 4 * 4 or 5 * 5 cm mesh. Prepare the linoleum and roll it up.

Gradually remove the protective film from the tape, and as you go, unfold the roll, fixing it on the mesh of the tape. This is done by at least 2 people so that it is possible to evenly distribute all the coating material, which will begin to cling to the adhesive base of the tape.

The process is clearly shown in the video.
