Do it yourself + Video and Photo

Do it yourself + Video and Photo The chess fence has many similarities with the picket fence. Due to its properties, the fence becomes less permeable and the viewing angle decreases. When creating this fence, there are practically no difficulties, therefore, self-assembly of the checkerboard fence is likely. This design is a support beams, to which boards are staggered on both sides.

What is the difference between a checkerboard fence and a picket fence?

Both of these types have a similar installation method, they are fixed on the crossbars with a small gap.

Difference from the main one

The main difference is that when installing a checkerboard type, the boards are fixed on both sides of the structure. The boards are placed parallel to each other with a small distance between. From the inside, they are attached according to the same principle, but the fixation occurs between the built-in materials. Another difference between a checkerboard and a picket fence is in its beautiful appearance on both sides. This is due to the way the boards are located, since they cover the crossbars with their entire appearance.

Otherwise, these types are very similar: installation on the same foundation, almost the same in size, the general method of building fences. But with a staggered installation, the amount of material increases exactly twice.

Advantages and disadvantages

The positive qualities of this design include:

  • Do it yourself + Video and Photo Due to the attractive design on both sides, there are no gaps or ugly areas.
  • Many types of mounting, which helps to adjust the gap between the boards, adjusting them in a variety of ways.
  • Its versatility.

The checkerboard fence will be appropriate for any landscape area.

  • Easy to install.
  • Possibility to quickly repair a certain section of the fence, in case of malfunctions.
  • Very harmonious design, several times superior to a simple picket fence.

There are very few negative qualities of this design

These include the repair of additional boards, regular maintenance (it is necessary to cover such a fence with protective equipment for a longer operational life).

If you do not do this constantly, then the period of your fence can be noticeably reduced. Another disadvantage is the lack of space between the boards. But if desired, even at the stage of erecting the chess fence, an increase in the space between the pickets is allowed, or they can be placed close to each other.

There are several types of chess:

  1. Made of wood.
  2. Made of metal.

  3. Made of plastic.

The checkerboard wooden fence is the most popular of all. This is justified by the fact that such a fence has a very attractive and memorable appearance. It can be painted, or you can preserve the natural pattern of lumber, highlighting it with varnish.Wood materials are lightweight, which greatly simplifies the installation of the structure.

The only drawback is constant care, since wood materials are more susceptible to moisture.

A metal fence is also used very often. It can be painted in different colors, but care must be taken that the paint does not peel off, this can lead to corrosion.

Plastic fence appeared relatively recently. It does not lend itself to precipitation and rust.

But it is significantly inferior in appearance and strength characteristics to the previous options.

By the method of positioning the pickets are subdivided into:

  1. The fence is a vertical checkerboard. The standard version, where the boards are arranged vertically. The distance between the pickets is chosen by the future owner of the building. But most often there are fences with a minimum gap between the boards.

  2. Horizontal checkerboard fence. It is much less common, but in terms of its strength characteristics it is not nearly inferior to the previous version.
  3. Similarity to tyna. In this version, the fence resembles a wicker fence and at the same time horizontally located boards. The boards are curved, pillars are bent on both sides and alternate in a checkerboard pattern.

Installation of the checkerboard fence

Before starting the installation, you must select the type of structure. Personal preferences should be taken into account, as well as the specifics of the conditions of use. For example, if there is a vegetable garden next to the fence, then it is better to make more distance between the pickets. Or, if you need to maintain confidentiality, then you should make a solid fence, without holes. The installation is carried out in stages.

First of all, a foundation is erected, then pillars are erected, transverse logs are attached, and the final stage is the installation of a picket fence.

Preparatory work

At the initial stage, it is necessary to create a sketch of the structure. The dimensions for the fence are determined, the drawing shows the location of the columns. The next stage of preparation is to remove excess vegetation, garbage collection, if any. In some cases, it is worthwhile to pre-level the soil surface.

At this stage, we advise you to decide on the differences in surface levels, if it is very noticeable, you may have to build a stepped fence.

When the drawing is ready, you can transfer it to the ground. We make markings, mark the places of installation of the pillars (we drive the colas into the ground, connect them with ropes). The distance between the columns should not exceed 3 meters. It is this distance that is quite enough for the strength of the structure and reducing the cost of construction.

Setting the columns

Almost always the chessboard is built on a columnar foundation. This is a lightweight structure, so there is no need to build other foundations.

Types of pillars:

  • Do it yourself + Video and Photo Brick,
  • Wood,
  • Concrete,
  • Metal.

Considering that this fence is very light, it does not need to use concrete supports. This fence also does not need brick pillars, but it is often used, but purely for visual reasons.

The most running posts are wooden and metal.

For their installation, you need to make a hole, you can use, for example, a shovel or a drill. The supports are laid in the ground to a depth of about 1-1.5 m. In order to be sure of the depth of the support installation, you should know more about the degree of freezing of the soil cover.

An important role is assigned to the quality and characteristics of the soil cover. The harder it is, the shallower the depth should be chosen.

The size of the holes must correspond to the diameter of the posts (25 centimeters). Installation work:

  • At the very bottom, it is recommended to install a drain.
  • Lower the roofing felt sleeves for waterproofing.

  • Installation of supports, adjustment of the location using a level, fixation.
  • Fill with concrete mixture.
  • For metal posts, special caps are required.

Securing the bars

If you chose the vertical fence option, you need to build logs. These are horizontal beams with a section of 40x20 mm.

They are attached to columns. If the supports are metal, then you can fix the parts by welding. For wooden posts, classic fastening options (screws, nails) are used. With brick supports, the crossbeams will be attached to the embedded parts. These are pieces of metal fixed in brick.

Installation of walls

When erecting a wooden fence, the distance between the boards should be the same relative to each other. First, the crossbars are fixed on one side, then on the other side. On the other side, the boards should cover the distance left from the back. The final stage is priming and painting the boards. In the case of wooden material, varnish is more often used, this will help preserve natural beauty.
