Do-it-yourself wood putty

Do-it-yourself wood putty Putty for wood for painting - choosing a product

If you have a lot of items in your house, which are made of wood (window frames, floors, pieces of furniture), sooner or later they will need to update their appearance - painting.

But the wood will have such a feature that after a while or due to mechanical stress, cracks, irregularities and other types of flaws may appear, which the paint can even emphasize, if you do not pre-treat the surface with putty. It will make it possible to achieve evenness, filling even the smallest holes in the product, and ensure long-term preservation of the paint layer.

Let's figure out how to choose the right material for preparing a wood surface for painting. Learn about the best paintable wood fillers.

General information

Types of putties for wood

There are all kinds of decorative type of putty, but it is necessary to clearly define , do you need a putty in order to preserve the wood pattern, when the top of the wood product is covered with a varnish, or you plan to tint with paint and varnish. The first types of products are almost invisible on the surface and copy the woody shade. The latter are most often made in white.

The types of putties can be distinguished:

  1. Do-it-yourself wood putty Oil-based - due to the presence of drying oil, such products will provide an opportunity to protect the surface from moisture. And its high resistance to changes in various weather conditions makes such a putty an excellent choice for applying on wood windows, for processing house facades and other items that are located on the street.

  2. Acrylic - polymer-type compounds with acrylic will be safe for the environment, they can withstand heavy loads and get along well with a humid environment (do not allow moisture to penetrate deep into the wood).
  3. Water based - do not contain harmful chemical components and do not conduct liquids. Such a putty can protect wood from fire, but it dries out for a long time.

If you are specifically interested in a natural wood color, an oil or water based sample will be most appropriate.

Criteria for choosing a means for painting

Depending on the conditions where the operations for the use of wooden objects will be carried out, the most suitable types of covering material should be selected.

When carrying out repair work outdoors, an important parameter for the selection of a filling agent is resistance to heat, high humidity and cooling. For this reason, for processing the walls of houses made of wood, fences and other attributes of architecture, oil putty will be the best choice. It can be used after processing wood components from decay and insects, but before the final staining.

Acrylic compounds will be the most versatile, and they are also suitable for wood products inside and outside the premises, because they have a high level of resistance to wear and tear. It should be borne in mind that such putty agents are usually made in white, because they are specifically designed to be applied over paint, and not a varnish composition.

For pieces of furniture, parquet flooring and other items with which a person constantly comes into contact, you should choose safe materials, and therefore harmless water compounds can be used. Their characteristics for the most part are similar to acrylic putty mixtures, but the cost is much less.

Process details

Required tools

The wood product decoration process has several stages - to begin with, the surface must be prepared in the required way, and after it it can be completely putty and then painted. But depending on the type of materials that will be painted, the technology will be slightly different.

The general list of required tools for staining will include the following:

  • Paint composition of the required composition and color.

  • Brushes.
  • Primer and putty.
  • Spatula.
  • "Sandpaper" (we are talking about sandpaper).
  • Construction hair dryer or cleaning agent.

We need a hair dryer or a cleaning agent to remove the old layer of paint and varnish from the product. You should be extremely careful, because the temperature of heating the surface with a hairdryer is quite high, and this can negatively affect the wooden object of processing. For this reason, if you are looking to repair antiques, it is best to use chemical cleaners.

Recommendations for applying the leveling layer

Putty for wood for painting helps to solve many problems:

  • Sealing artificial holes in the surface of the wood, eg nail marks.
  • Fills in naturally occurring pores on a wood surface for further leveling (if there are porous woods such as oak) and protection from damage.

  • Forms a layer of uniform type, on which paint adheres perfectly.

In order for the processed area to be obtained according to all the rules, several recommendations should be used:

  1. Do-it-yourself wood putty If you work with putty outdoors, you should choose a day when the air temperature is higher than +6 degrees. Otherwise, the composition will begin to thicken and will poorly fill the cracks.
  2. If there are voids on the surface, they should be filled with putty in advance, and then sandpaper, remove the "sand" that appears and start full-fledged processing of wood with putty, and after it dries, you can start painting.
  3. The best material for a trowel is stainless steel.

  4. Pits in wood with a great depth (more than 1 cm) should be filled with putty in several layers, letting each dry. Application thickness should be from 0.2 to 0.4 cm.

Next, consider how to prepare plywood and natural wood.

  • Preparation for plywood

Although it is difficult to call a plywood sheet a full-fledged wood, since such material is often obtained from veneer, it is often used in construction industry. With the help of plywood, you can make both a large number of interior items and use it for wall decoration, obtaining partitions and more. Due to the flat surface, plywood can be easily painted, but everything should be putty beforehand. On sale if plywood sheets of different sizes, and besides, it will not be difficult to cut it, but to cover a huge area, as a rule, you cannot do with just one sheet - you need to install several pieces at once, right next to each other. As a result of this action, joints appear, which must be sealed, since otherwise cracks may appear on the paint and varnish layer.

To hide the seams, they should be covered with a putty - apply the compound across the joint to form a dense layer. It will be most convenient to work with a 10 cm spatula, which should be periodically moistened with water, because acrylic compounds dry quickly and lumps can form. After the puttying process on the surface, everything should be leveled with a grinder. When the layer dries, it is worth repeating the action, but covering the entire surface, and not just the seams.

  • Wood preparation

Wood putty for painting is very important in preparation.

Wood surfaces often retain knot-like roughness on the wood, and also have places where resin can appear - these points must be eliminated before applying the leveling compound. The knots should be cut with a chisel (approximately from 0.3 to 0.5 cm in depth), creating a small depression, which should then be filled with putty. But before that, objects made of wood that have not previously been covered with a varnish should be oiled - for this, heated drying oil is used.

Please note that when you work with a product that had traces of paint and varnish, paint or other substances, the top layer must be completely cleaned. To do this, wipe the surface with a cleaner and wait until the soaked paint can be easily removed with a spatula.

Next, wash with plain clean water or with the addition of vinegar to neutralize the alkaline environment. After that, it is important to sandpaper to lift the wood fibers. To improve adhesion to a wood surface, apply a primer mixture, choosing with the same composition as that of a putty, for example, acrylic.

Final puttying before painting

The process of processing wood surfaces with putty is reduced to the following actions:

  • The composition should be diluted to a creamy appearance, beating with a drill with a nozzle.
  • It is not necessary to apply a large amount of putty at once, as it can dry quickly.
  • Start working on cracks and pits, creating a layer of 0.2 cm.
  • When the first layer is laid and wait until it dries, and also smooth everything with sandpaper.

  • Repeat the application, reducing the thickness of the mixture to 0. 15 cm.
  • Cover everything with primer.

Now your wood product is completely ready for painting, and for this it is better to take coloring compounds with the same component as in the putty - acrylic paint, oil, water-dispersion. When you work with the composition for wood or other type of material, remember that the air humidity in the room cannot be more than 50%, and on the street it cannot be more than 76%.

In the room, the ideal temperature for quick drying of the product is from +20 to +26 degrees.
