Door upholstery with dermantine. Features of the upholstery of wooden and metal doors

Door upholstery with dermantine. Features of the upholstery of wooden and metal doors In addition to the protective function, the entrance door serves as a decoration and addition to the interior of the house. Even an old door can be transformed with new upholstery such as dermantine. It's easy enough to do it yourself, and the material is quite affordable.

And how to upholster the door with dermantine with your own hands is described in this article.

Dermantin is translated as imitation of the skin. At the heart of this material is a nitrocellulose-coated cotton fabric. Today it is the most common material for upholstery, which has the following advantages.

Properties of dermantin

  • Long service life.

    The ability to maintain its presentability for more than ten years;

  • Moisture resistance. Dermantinne is able to absorb water, so that the waterproofing material used with it does not change its properties;
  • Resistance to decay. Substances in its composition inhibit the spread of harmful organisms;
  • Resistance to UV rays. This quality makes it possible to install dermantine doors without the risk of burnout;
  • Resistance to temperature fluctuations;
  • Easy to maintain. Cleaned with a simple soap solution;
  • Shows fairly good resistance to many types of cleaning agents;
  • Good sound and thermal insulation properties.

Preparatory work

The following materials will be required:

  • Dermantin. This is a cut-off material produced in rolls with a width of 110-140 cm. If a standard metal door is upholstered, then a piece of dermantine is taken for it a little larger than its size. But for the wooden one you need additional dermantine rollers;
  • Backing material. For this, foam rubber is often used from ten to twenty millimeters in thickness.

    If you need reinforced heat and sound insulation, then use a heat-insulating material - izolon, which has higher characteristics than foam rubber.

  • Decoration elements;
  • Glue;
  • Standard set of tools.

After preparation, start finishing. The old upholstery, handles, lock are removed first. The door is cleaned and degreased.

Removing the door from the hinges is optional, however, it will make the siding easier.

Important: When trimming, it is important to take into account the direction of opening of the door. This is required to determine the number of rollers required. So, if the opening is made to the outside, then you will need 4 rollers on each side, and if inside, then 3 is enough. Roller serves for better insulation of the opening.

For each roller you will need a dermantine strip 10 to 15 cm wide and a piece of padding polyester. On one side, the strip is fixed along the side of the door, its front side to the bottom. Then the synthetic winterizer is rolled into a roller and wrapped using the second end of the dermantin.

The nuances of working with dermantin

It is not uncommon for situations to arise when, during long-term roll storage of dermantine, it becomes washed and becomes impossible to work with.

It can be smoothed in several ways:

  • Door upholstery with dermantine.

Features of the upholstery of wooden and metal doors With water. A piece of material is spread on a clean, straight surface and a wet cloth is placed over it. The fabric dries up and the dermantin is smoothed;
  • The surface of the dermantin is ironed with an iron, beforehand, a cotton wet cloth is placed on it.

Note: Dermantine cannot be ironed from the front side, since there is a possibility of burning it.

  • We cover the wooden door. First, the rollers are prepared to close the opening between the door and the frame. One strip is taken and with a stapler it is nailed to the front surface of the door, with a slight approach. This is how the door is upholstered with dermantine stripes throughout the entire perimeter. Next, strips of 8-10 cm wide of foam rubber are laid inside and attached with brackets to the canvas.

    After they take a piece of dermantine, it is tucked by 5 centimeters around the edges and superimposed on one corner, slightly going over the roller. Dermantin is nailed with decorative nails, for which an indent from the edges is made by 5-7 millimeters.

  • Then they take a piece from another corner and tightening it is nailed. The evenness of the piece relative to the doorway is checked.
  • Next, the material is nailed from the top edge and further on the other sides according to the same principle.

Important: Here you must not overdo it with the constriction of the material, otherwise there will be folds. To fix this, you will need to pull out the nails, which will naturally damage the material.

  • Having reached the bottom side, the other side is also nailed. Then the bottom of the piece is attached. Here you will first need to mark the location of the nails so that they are located at equal intervals from each other along the bottom of the door.

  • Door upholstery with dermantine. Features of the upholstery of wooden and metal doors Finishing the outer side. The algorithm here is slightly different. To begin with, a drawing is made of the projection of the box on the doorway, that is, using a simple pencil, lines are drawn along the perimeter and the contour of the upholstery is obtained with a margin for turning.

  • Next, the rollers are nailed, starting from its bottom side. The roller is attached in such a way that when the door is closed, it is tightly pressed against the threshold.

Note: If the lower roller is too close to the threshold, it may wear off after a time.

  • The lining is fixed, making a small indent from the line, according to the analogue already described above, dermantin is nailed. Rollers are prepared with a large amount of foam rubber and fixed on the remaining sides.

    The main thing to consider is that the location of the rollers on the hinged side should be flush, and five millimeters should be retreated from the upper and opposite edges.

Important: If the roller is very large, it will be difficult to close the door. And if it is too small, then it will not be able to properly seal the opening.

  • Then the bottom edge is mounted and the fittings are installed.

Basic nuances of metal door trim

The door is coated with glue along the entire perimeter.

Then foam rubber is glued to it, which is then cut along a metal sheet with the help of a clerical knife.

Next, glue is applied to the upper end of the door leaf and dermantin is glued. Then the material is glued from the hinge side, then from the side of the lock with a pull. When gluing the left side, you need to drive off excess material. It remains to glue the bottom edge and you're done.

At the end, the excess is cut off in the corners and a lock, handles and a peephole are installed.

Decorative finishes

The leatherette surface can be decorated. Various patterns are made with decorative nails and cords. Patterns are made on the upholstery with dotted punching. A rhombus is considered a frequent pattern.

The iron door is decorated before the upholstery, for which the upholstery material together with the lining are connected using special buttons. Today in stores there are special kits for decorating the door surface. The final stage is the hardware arrangement.

It is easiest to decorate on a wooden surface, but if there is a dense substrate, it will be easy to work on an iron one. For this, nails or buttons are fixed with a dense thread from the back side to the direct door trim, thereby connecting the foam rubber sheets with dermantin.

When the dermantine door upholstery has lost its attractiveness over time, but does not have significant abrasions, then it is not necessary to change it completely, you can simply paint with a special paint. This is a completely affordable and inexpensive method with which your door will take on a new look.

For this, acrylic paints can be used, which can be used on any surface, also on dermantine. You can use paint for leather that does not fade or crumble over time.

Paint kits are available on the market to help you find the right color for you.

This is achieved by mixing different shades.

For painting, the surface must first be prepared, namely cleaned of dust and degreased. Then the desired color is prepared. The paint can be applied with a brush or foam sponge in several layers with an interval of 20 minutes.

With the help of dermantine, you can easily update the look of any door with your own hands.

Sheathing can be performed not only on the front door, but also on the interior doors. This will help save the family budget, and if all the recommendations are followed correctly, your door will look no worse than the purchased option.
