Drywall damage and sealing methods How to repair a hole in drywall + video

When renovating a modern apartment, craftsmen very rarely do without one useful, even versatile material that we all know as drywall. In addition to being relatively inexpensive and practical, with its help you can make a variety of design-type delights (columns, arches, various curly niches). But still, drywall has one big drawback - it is quite fragile.

Even a small blow can dent it, and therefore every person who deals with drywall should definitely know how to repair a hole in drywall on the wall.

General information

Regardless of the reasons for the appearance of holes on the wall, it should be understood that they can be repaired with their own hands by a person who has never even held tools in his hands.

In this case, you will need very affordable and simple materials - you can buy them at any hardware store at a low price. First of all, you need the drywall sheets themselves. since you will be dealing with drywall walls, then you will need to close them up with the same sheets, or rather, their small fragments. Sheets of drywall will need to be cut and cut to seal the holes in the walls with the material.

If during the repair work you did not throw out the remnants of the material, then they may be required.

But in the absence of them, do not be discouraged, since buying even one sheet you will not spend a lot of money.

Preparation of all the essentials

A standard hacksaw will be used as the main tool, but you can also use a special construction knife. It is better to choose the second option, since it has a low cost and is easier to manage. Processing drywall around the edges can also be done with a similar knife, but for this procedure it is better to buy a plane. It is much more convenient and practical for such a task, and will also guarantee excellent results.

For processing, metal spatulas may still be required - narrow and wide. Every craftsman knows how to fill a hole in a drywall sheet, and for this reason, spatulas are always used to process the material.

A special finish for drywall will be used as the main material for processing. Standard gypsum is not suitable for this task, since it holds the texture much worse and can begin to crack during drying.

In addition, the list may include:

  • Wooden blocks.

  • Construction adhesive composition.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • Grout mesh.
  • Serpyanka mesh.

You will definitely need such consumables during the work.

How to remove a hole up to 5 mm

To seal a hole in drywall that has a minimum size, you need the simplest and most time-consuming method.Due to the small area of damage to the fragment, you only need one material - acrylic sealant. It should be applied to the place of damage (into the recess), and then leveled flush with a spatula on the plane of the wall.

Please note that after the sealant has dried, it should be sanded with regular sandpaper. This will help level the sealant layer to the same level as the wall, and at the same time eliminate any irregularities.

If it turns out that the glue shrinks and you get a small dent, you will need to apply an additional layer of putty.

How to remove a hole up to 30 mm

But such holes already imply a full-fledged "penetration" through, and not standard cracks and potholes. By the way, cracks can be easily removed by treating them with a standard primer solution. But this does not apply to holes in drywall, and they will need to be fixed in a slightly different way.

First of all, remember that such "through" holes will never have the correct geometric shape, so you will need to cut a square in the wall.

More often than not, people who have no idea how to patch holes in drywall try to level out such a pothole. But it will be useless to align the existing hole, so it is better to immediately start cutting out the shape of the required shape and size.

The only way to fix the defect is to use a patch. As such a material, you can use a wooden plank with almost the same dimensions as the cut out square. But it is imperative to make the width of the board a little narrower (only a few millimeters) so that it can completely fit into the square.

It is advisable that you use natural wood as a patch, but you can also take a regular chipboard sheet.

Drywall damage and sealing methods Be sure to fix the plate on the back side, but for this you need to at least bring it inside the walls. as a rule, the gap does not allow the plank to move freely, so you will need to sharpen the edges of the plank from the inside. This will make it possible for the material to enter and also to attach it to the wall. however, prepare the walls before placing the planks.

To do this, glue a piece of cardboard to the wood and glue everything over with a serpentine mesh, and the last action can be performed using ordinary PVC glue or a stapler. The serpyanka mesh will make it possible to get rid of the consequences of wood deformation due to moisture.

Before you start filling the hole in the drywall, you should also screw in the self-tapping screw in the middle of the board. It should be screwed in about 65%, since the self-tapping screw will play the role of a handle with which the bar will be brought into the walls. When the bar is already located inside the wall itself, it will need to be fixed with additional screws.

Problems can appear only with the first one, since you will need to hold the bar with one hand, and screw the self-tapping screw with the other. The presence and use of a screwdriver can greatly facilitate this task.

Next, prepare a putty solution and start filling the gap with a putty knife. It should be filled approximately 2/3, and then cut off a part of the cardboard (a couple of centimeters) to the plaster filler. A reinforcing mesh-serpyanka should be attached to the surface of the plank - it can be installed without any special problems, and the central part must be immersed in wet plaster.

After that, you will need the following in order to seal the hole in the drywall sheet:

  • Plaster the entire plane of the drywall sheet using plaster, with a wide trowel.
  • After the mixture has dried, it is required to level the entire plane of the walls under a single level, and this can be done using sandpaper or a trowel.
  • Rub all the irregularities monotonously until you get the desired result.

You will end up with a sealed hole in the wall made of a sheet of drywall. It should be noted right away that it is not necessary to constantly press on the material and the surface of the wall when performing work, since because of this the material can easily bend, deform, and because of this, it will be necessary to do everything again.

How to remove a hole up to 60 mm

If in the previous version it was possible to do with the use of only one plank, then in case of such damage, you will need to use drywall directly. To do this, cut out a small circle in the place of damage, and the drywall itself is in the form of a square, but a couple of centimeters more. Further, this same square should be attached with the back side to the circle so that it turns out to carefully drill the circle. So, in the end, you should have a square with a circular insert, while leaving the paper part.

All experienced craftsmen, before starting to seal a hole on a drywall wall, will definitely go over the patch with a primer mixture.

This should be done both with the patch itself and with the entire surface of the drywall. after the primer dries, an additional layer of plaster-based putty should be applied to the edges of the hole (wall). Only after that you can start "laying out" the patch inside the walls. Spread the rest of the putty on the surface of the square, pressing it against the wall.

Repairing holes larger than 60 mm

To carry out such repairs, one patch in the form of an inlay will not be enough.

There is a great chance that such a fragment will simply fall out of the wall. For this reason, it is worth fully using additional materials. If the previous version of the patch was cut out in the form of a circle, then this time you need a quadrilateral. It should be slightly larger than the hole itself. The cut fragment should be attached to the damaged area, and then mark the edges for the future hole, cut out the specified figure.

Drywall damage and sealing methods The only possible problem in this case is a cracked seam. To prevent this, a triangular groove should be made. To do this, using a construction knife, you will need to clean the edges of the fragment and the holes at an angle of 45 degrees. By the way, a frame is required for the liner. It is made using a wooden block that will be slightly longer than a piece of drywall sheet (about 5 cm).

Next, it should be pushed inside the walls, pressed against the inside of the drywall. to fix the bar, screw it onto a self-tapping screw. Thus, depending on the size of the hole, it will be necessary to install one or even several fragments of a timber bar as a frame.

When you have made and secured the frame, immerse the piece inside the walls and begin priming the surface. Docking seams need to be glued with a serpyanka mesh, and then putty.

Usually, the question of how to seal a hole in drywall in the wall does not appear, and everyone can cope with such a task on their own.

When the standard filler is dry, add an additional layer of finishing filler, and then, when it hardens, the wall should be sanded and leveled to the desired condition. Thus, large holes can be repaired in a short time without any problems. This does not require the special skills of a professional builder - a little effort and time will be enough to eliminate defects on the wall.
