We create an ergonomic kitchen - how to save zoning time for cooking
Choosing a layout for the main areas
Before delving into the numbers, it is worth determining how to place furniture and household appliances in such a way that everything fits comfortably. The first step is to consider three main areas, and they will be individual for each person. Someone will follow the chain "microwave oven-refrigerator-sink", while someone else needs a full-fledged cooking area, stove and oven, as well as a sink. When developing a kitchen layout, you should consider exactly how you will use it, and which zones are very important, and which you can donate or simply take them to the background.
We suggest looking at the photo, which shows the rule of the working triangle.
It was invented back in 1920 by German scientists to create an ergonomic kitchen. Scientists have proposed placing the stove, refrigerator and sink in such a way that they are at the shaped vertices of an equilateral triangle. It turned out that such layouts are really more convenient and better than others, saving time, as well as the efforts of the hostess.
There are several ways to create a working triangle in the kitchen:
- Single row kitchen.
- Two-row kitchen.
- Kitchen in the form of the letter "L".
- U-shaped kitchen.
- Island kitchen area.
- Peninsular kitchen.
Let's talk more about layout and ergonomics further.
The correct countertop height is one that is 15 cm lower than the bend of the elbow. This means that if you are taller than 165 cm, then standard countertops with a height of 85 to 90 cm will make you bend over when cooking and will numb your back.
The optimum oven height is 10 cm less than your elbow. You do not need to bend over to check the readiness of the dish and it will be convenient to take out the baking sheet.
For this reason, it makes sense to think about placing the oven and hob separately. So that you do not run to the opposite end of the kitchen with a hot baking sheet in your hands, you should place the beginning of the work surface near the oven.
When choosing a refrigerator, you should think about the ratio of the freezer part and the refrigerator part.
It can be different - 60 to 40, 70 to 30 and 50 to 50. Perhaps you like the idea of buying a freezer separately, and put a compact refrigerator closer to the work area.
By the way, if you have a habit of getting all the products in advance, before cooking, then the refrigerator is definitely not your key area, which means that it is not at all necessary to fit it into the working triangle.
The ergonomic design of the kitchen with an island will be available if the room area is 15 m 2 and more.
It will be easiest to use it as an additional work surface, because:
- Installing a stove / sink on an island requires an extractor hood or plumbing.
- Hot oil or soapy water will spray all over the kitchen.
It will be very convenient to roll out dough or cut vegetables on the kitchen island.
In addition, do not forget that this is also an additional storage space for kitchen utensils. The height of the island is the same as the work surface.
We suggest dividing the kitchen space into 5 zones vertically:
- The lowest is a bottom drawer type with heavy items that are rarely used.
- The lower one will assume the storage of cutlery and various small things that are constantly needed.
- Middle is the area of the apron where you cook and tries not to force it with various items.
- Higher - located at eye level, and dishes are stored here.
- The highest is the area below the surface of the ceiling, where it is not easy to reach, and where you can put rarely used utensils.
First, we suggest that you determine if all zones are really needed. Most of the time we use only those where we can reach with our hand, and so as not to stand on a chair and not bend over. Something is stored under the ceiling and near the surface of the floor that is rarely used.
Is it worth it to buy a larger kitchen set?
A little about volumes - most manufacturers adhere to the typical parameters of kitchen cabinets.
- Width from 25 to 80 cm.
- Depth from 50 to 58 cm (upper cabinets from 30 cm).
- The height of the lower module is about 85 cm, and the upper one is from 45 to 100 cm.
- The depth of the table top is from 60 to 90 cm.
The dimensions follow choose based on your own habits and physical parameters. So, the bottom of the top cabinets should be located 5 or even 10 cm below the shoulder, and the top ends at a height that you can reach without standing on tiptoe. There should be at least 25 cm between the cabinets and the forehead, and this is extremely important.
When choosing the width of the bottom cabinets, you should think about what is your priority. For narrow kitchens, it makes sense to order worktops with a depth of 50 cm, and the saved cm will make it possible to visually expand the room.
But if you want to fundamentally end the game of Tetris with pans and pots, once and for all, it makes sense to make the depth of the cabinets up to 80 cm
After choosing a set, you should not forget and supplement your favorite kitchen space with a couple of convenient accessories. But the most important thing is that the kitchen is functional, cozy and beautiful.
