Facade foam: use for insulation and decoration

To carry out external wall insulation, finish or give a building expressiveness in accordance with the classical style, facade foam is often used. But before talking about its forms and methods of application, we would like to give an answer to the question constantly asked by readers about expanded polystyrene: is there a difference between these materials, and if so, what is it.

What unites foam with expanded polystyrene

What is plastics (plastics) are known to everyone, since they have long and firmly entered our daily life. Their qualitative characteristics are very different, since the initial raw material component and the technologies by which it is processed are different.

Foam is produced by foaming plastic polymer masses, which can be based on five different polymers.

One of them is polystyrene, so it's easy to guess that it is simply a type of foam. So, if you summarize their names, there will be no mistake.

Expanded polystyrene - it is foam

Another thing is that different technologies can be used for processing raw materials, which makes it possible to obtain products with varying degrees of density. And the resistance of the material to certain mechanical influences directly depends on this indicator, which determines the scope of application.

Number one is external insulation of enclosing structures, since all types of foam are an excellent heat insulator.

There is only one condition: the operating temperature should be such that the structure of the material is not destroyed.

Note! It is not recommended to use polystyrene indoors, as when ignited, they begin to emit toxic substances.

What the standard says

In everyday life and construction, we most often come across only one type of foam, which is called: "pressless expanded polystyrene", and is marked with PSB-S or PPS. The numbers following the letter mark indicate the density of the material in kg / m³.

Polystyrene plates made of extrusion and suspension polystyrene, with or without graphite additives, are produced according to one standard (GOST 15588 * 2014) .

This document defines the limit values for the density of the foam, and gives recommendations for its use.

In particular, plates of minimum strength PPS10 - PPS14 can only be used as the middle layer of the insulated wall, inside a three-layer structure. In the example below, you can see that on one side the foam is protected by block masonry, and on the other by brick.

In this case, he will not have to bear any loads - which means that there is no need for greater strength.Conversely, a less dense material has a lower thermal conductivity, which is only better for a wall.

Plates of these brands are also suitable for warming a ventilated facade, for cladding with profiled sheets, siding, clapboard.

Suspended ventilated facades improve the thermal efficiency of walls, and the use of decorative materials of various textures and colors allows achieving improved aesthetics of the building as a whole. Read more about ventilation facades in a special article.

Foamed polystyrene boards of grades PPS15 - PPS20 have sufficient strength to be used as a base for plastering. In the marking of products intended for warm plastering systems, the letter "F" is placed after the digital designation.

For example: PPS20F.

Note! For roofs, floors, foundations and other heavily loaded structures, plates with a strength of 23 kg / m ³ and above are used.

Types and sizes of boards

The standard divides polystyrene boards into three types:

  • Type "P" - these are slabs that are cut from large-format blocks.

Block from which the slabs will be cut
  • Type "RG" - the same cut slabs, only with the content of graphite, which is added in order to increase the heat-insulating properties of the material. Visually differs in gray and is more expensive.

Graphite foam
  • Type "T". These are plates made by mechano-thermal forming: pneumatically, using a matrix - or vacuum, using a punson. Also, in the production of foam boards, both methods can be combined. Everyone knows extrusion boards - this is exactly the material of the "T" type. Using the same technologies, figured elements of facade decor are also manufactured, for which plaster, steel or cast aluminum molds can be used.

Such expanded polystyrene can also contain graphite.

In shape, polystyrene boards differ only in the configuration of the edge, which can be either simple rectangular or with a preformed or selected quarter. The size range is very large: the length of the slabs can be up to 6 m, and the width is 2 m (minimum 0.5 m in both parameters). But the most demanded size is 1200 * 600 mm.

Thickness can vary from a minimum of 10 mm and, in 5 mm intervals, to half a meter. Such thick slabs are used for the production of facade decor, but only white. Gray foam is used only for insulation.

Practical use of foam plastic on the facade

Above, we mentioned all the options for using foam on the facade. They didn’t mention only the decorative and insulating material - thermal panels, the installation of which makes it possible to simultaneously improve thermal efficiency and decorate the walls.

This approach is much more profitable than the use of expanded polystyrene in the cake of a ventilated facade, when you first need to mount the frame, then the insulation, and then hang the panels.

Everyone knows how to count money, so basically Styrofoam on the facade is mounted according to two schemes: as a base for plastering, and as an independent cladding. It remains only to consider these methods in more detail and understand their nuances.

Substrate under plaster

Installation of an insulating foam layer, on top of which the plaster will be applied, consists of 11 main stages.

Step 1 - priming

First, the walls must be cleaned of mortar flows and other contamination with a spatula and a metal brush, after which the facade surface is dedusted with applying a primer.

Step 2 - mounting the basement profile

A horizontal line is struck on top of the base / plinth , and according to the preliminary marking, the basement profile is installed. It will support the bottom row of slabs.

Step 3 - kneading the glue

cement based, specially designed for this purpose.

They are sold dry and sealed with water before use. The pot life of such solutions is only 20-30 minutes, so you need to mix the glue in small portions.

Step 4 - cutting halves of the slabs for dressing the seams

Install the insulation always need to dress the stitches. It will provide its alternation of rows, one of which starts with a whole, and the second with a slab cut in half. It is better to prepare the necessary halves in advance.

Step 5 - applying the adhesive to the back of the boards

The adhesive is applied on the reverse side of the slabs with spots (using a conventional trowel), or tracks (using a notched trowel). Then the plate is simply pressed against the base. Glue should not get on the side edges of the insulation.

Step 6 - fixing with dowels

After gluing, the boards are attached using dowel umbrellas.First, a hole is drilled in the right place, and then the fungus is inserted and clogged.

On average, 5 fasteners have to be made per 1 m².

Step 7 - making a reinforcing layer

After installing the dowels, place them plantings are sealed with glue, after which it is applied in a thin layer over the entire area of insulation.

Step 8 - reinforcement of the glue with glass mesh

To strengthen the screed by more a fiberglass mesh is mounted with not dried glue, which is sunk into the solution with light movements of the trowel. The reinforcement profiles of the openings are immediately installed, usually consisting of a plaster corner with a mesh.

Step 9 - applying a layer of adhesive over the mesh

Now you need to apply another layer of glue so that the mesh is completely hidden in it.

After it dries, it will be possible to proceed with any type of plastering - including decorative.

Step 10 - Applying the Adhesive Primer

But first you need a prepared surface prime again so that subsequent layers adhere to it better.

Step 11 - plastering and painting

Such a facade can be plastered with any composition, but to enhance the thermal insulation effect for this purpose, it is better to use the so-called warm plaster.

It differs from the usual one in that it uses perlite granules or foam glass balls as a large filler. In addition, it has a beautiful grainy texture and looks decorative.

Thermal panels

Panels made of rigid facade foam are used to insulate external walls with their simultaneous decoration. From above, it is lined with a decorative layer, which is also designed to protect the insulating part from external influences. It can be a tile made of artificial stone, clinker, marble chips, a layer of textured fiber-reinforced concrete.

Installation

In general, thermal panels can be mounted on glue, but this requires a perfectly flat wall surface.

This requirement is met only by the walls of frame houses, which are sheathed on the outside with OSB boards. In the case of masonry, especially brick, flat walls are an unattainable dream of a decorator.

Mounting on glue

Therefore, most often such cladding is carried out along the lathing, which allows you to level any errors in the base. And then, due to the thickness of the frame, it is possible to provide a ventilated gap through which steam from the premises will escape outside.

Depending on the configuration, there may be some peculiarities in the installation of panels, but in general it is carried out according to the following scheme.

Table 2. Installation of panels.

Facade foam: use for insulation and decoration

Step 1 - installation of a vapor-permeable membrane

A vapor-permeable membrane is mounted on the wall, which will allow steam to escape from the inside, and will protect the wall from atmospheric moisture from the outside and condensate.

Step 2 - setting the starting bar along the baseline

This bar serves as a guide for starting wall decoration. It is installed according to preliminary markings made using the level.

If the surface of your plinth is flush with the main wall, the starter plank can be set at the level of the blind area. In this case, the base can be distinguished only visually, using panels with a different texture for its decoration.

Step 3 - marking the installation locations of the suspensions

So the vertical belts are marked, along which the suspensions will be installed. The places for drilling holes are immediately outlined.

Step 4 - drilling for fasteners

Drilling is performed at the marked points holes for mounting hangers.

Step 5 - installation of the rack

Dowels are driven into the holes, applied suspension and fastened with two self-tapping screws. A frame element is already attached to it.

Note! racks can be mounted from a bar, but the lathing will turn out to be more durable using a galvanized steel profile. PP size 60 * 27.

The profile is attached to the suspension with self-tapping screws 4.

2 * 13 mm, two pieces on each side.

Facade foam: use for insulation and decoration

Step 6 - forming the crate

Vertical between suspensions should be no more than 1 m, and horizontally - 40 cm. Two guides are installed along the perimeters of openings and corners. The framing fittings are attached to one, and the adjacent panels are attached to the other.

Facade foam: use for insulation and decoration

Step 7 - insulation of the basement line of the walls

The basement of the walls is the most cold, so additional insulation will not harm it.

Lay one row of polystyrene in the crate, and foam the places of its abutment to the metal profile.

Facade foam: use for insulation and decoration

Step 8 - Install cladding along the base / plinth line

Best for the base / plinth finishes are suitable for panels with a stone texture. They are attached to the guides with 4.3 * 32 mm self-tapping screws. In principle, they can also be used to clad walls completely, or only separate fragments of the facade.

Step 9 - setting the outer corner element

In our case, the main walls will be faced with panels styled as brickwork. The elements of the outer corner are mounted first.

Step 10 - installation of the row panel

The row panel is joined to the corner by means of pins and grooves, with pretreatment of edges with silicone sealant.

Facade foam: use for insulation and decoration

Step 11 - fixing the panel with a self-tapping screw

All cladding elements to the lathing fasten with self-tapping screws so that they, having passed through the insulation, caught on the guide.

Facade foam: use for insulation and decoration

Step 12 - panel docking

The panels are joined together using a groove-ridged method , and the sealant makes it possible to seal the connection.

Facade foam: use for insulation and decoration

Step 13 - trimming

Panels are trimmed at the points of adjoining openings. The cuts will not be visible, as they will be hidden under the framing elements.

Step 14 - finishing the cladding

Manufacturers usually offer a set of panels for framing windows of various configurations, including arched. Their installation completes the cladding.

In the end, you can get cladding that is in no way inferior in beauty to real brickwork.
