External plaster of the house : description of the material, features, varieties. Exterior wall decoration is an extremely important and even responsible measure that is required in order to create a protective layer and a beautiful appearance. One of the most popular methods is considered to be the exterior plaster of the house. This method does not require the performer to have professional skills, as well as to use very expensive and complex equipment.
Material for work has an average price, which is much less than what may be required for other types of cladding.
Decorating the facade of a house with plaster has many advantages over other materials, which made the material extremely popular:
- The coating helps prevent moisture penetration, which can have a permissive effect. This does not create an obstacle to the normal exchange of steam, which makes it possible for the walls to breathe.
- The outer layer is additional thermal and acoustic insulation. This is achieved through additives that can improve the characteristics of the mixture.
- Decorative and visual appeal - for cladding, you can use different types of products, as well as technologies that will make it possible to obtain the desired color and texture.
The mixture for plastering is well tinted.
- Elasticity - a similar property is possessed by compositions that have polymer components. Due to this quality, the coating will not collapse due to building shrinkage and temperature extremes.
- Convenience of installation work - facade finishing does not require complex calculations and construction of a frame base.
- Possibility of repair work - any damage can be easily repaired, but keep in mind that if they make up more than 1/3 of the entire surface, this will mean the wrong composition or violation of the conditions for application.
All advantages are ideally complemented by the fact that the material has an affordable cost even if you plan to buy modern polymer solutions.
Working with different surfaces
It consists in impregnating the base with protective compounds so that putrefactive processes are excluded. If the work is performed with a log structure, then it is required to make a special crate, since otherwise the adhesion of the solution to the wall will be minimal.
The fact is that plaster mortars and wood have different coefficients of expansion, and for this reason, to apply the solution, one should either equip a wooden reinforcing mesh, which is very problematic, or attach insulation to the wall surface and apply it on it is a layer of plaster
For such cases, an initial treatment with cement compositions is required.
As you can see, each material from which the walls are made needs an individual approach.
Please note, that the plastering of external walls made of aerated concrete blocks is an extremely responsible event.
The fact is that for work, compositions should be used that will have lower strength indicators. This is required in order to avoid internal stress between the materials
Although the direct plastering of cellular concrete requires the use of special compounds, when installing the material for insulation, you can use cheaper and simpler solutions.
The question of what to plaster walls has become an integral part of the working moment. It is not always possible to immediately determine which type of material is best suited, since there are many options on the construction market that differ greatly in their characteristics.
Exterior wall plaster can be divided into three main categories.
In this group, there are solutions based on gypsum and cement. The second type is the most popular, and this is due to the fact that cement has excellent characteristics, as well as low cost. But there are a number of disadvantages that make it difficult to use on houses that are recently built. In terms of price-quality ratio, the cement-based mineral composition is an ideal solution.
But the gypsum composition is used much less often, since it has low resistance to atmospheric precipitation, although at the moment there are already mixtures that contain many polymer additives. This gradually leads to the fact that the vapor permeability is disturbed at the surface that is plastered.
This group includes such varieties for facade plaster as silicate, acrylic and silicone. Each option has a different basis, and it is this that directly affects the properties of the material. The most popular mixes are acrylic.
They have excellent resistance to environmental influences. But their main drawback is that the material is recognized as flammable and prone to pollution, and this implies a loss of beauty in appearance. In addition, acrylic compounds differ from the rest in that they have high resistance to ultraviolet rays, and also have a wide range of colors.
Polymer grouts are very expensive, so a simple finish should be done first to level with cheaper materials.
We make the mixture with our own hands
There is also a third version of facade plaster for outdoor use.
These include compositions that are made on the basis of a mineral filler, and plasticizers and modifiers are used as additives. Plastering an external wall with such materials is complicated by the fact that it is practically impossible to achieve an ideal selection of components. This limits the durability of the coating. The choice of this or that composition will largely depend on the purpose of the building, since even a mineral or homemade mixture for plastering is suitable for an outbuilding, but for the front of the house it is better to spend money and buy a polymer.
The technology of external plastering of the house with our own hands we assume that the work will be divided into stages that should be done in strict sequence:
Now let's take a closer look at all the steps.
Choice of material
Decorating a house from the outside with a plaster mortar begins with choosing the right composition.
For this, the following rules should be followed:
It should be borne in mind that the material is sold dry and will have to be cooked.
Dry mixes last longer, are cheaper, but home craftsmen should choose ready-made mixes, since they are much easier to work with.
Please note that when purchasing, you should consider the expiration date and manufacturer. It is better not to choose little-known firms, especially if the cost of the material is lower than that of analogues.
The exterior plaster of the house assumes that the base will be carefully prepared:
Small pieces of paint should be removed mechanically. Please note that fresh plaster should never be applied over old finishes, as there is a high likelihood of delamination.
If the work will be performed on walls that have weak adhesion, that is, adhesion (for example, reinforced concrete slabs), then they should be covered with a reinforcing mesh before plastering. It should be pulled over the entire area; use screws and dowels for fastening. The reinforcing mesh can be made of steel, but in any case it should be pulled over the wall without overlaps and creases.
Small doubts may arise as to when it is necessary to decide how to plaster the house and at the same time make a layer of thermal insulation.
This situation is not uncommon, and for it you will need to do the following:
- After the preparatory stage, the surface of the walls should be soaked with an antiseptic solution.
- Work should be carried out using a hard layer of insulation - foam or foam. The sheets should be laid on glue in a staggered manner, and then fixed with special dowels.
- The joints should be coated with polyurethane foam or sealant. This will make it possible to avoid the appearance of a "cold bridge".
- Pull the membrane and reinforcement mesh from above.
Please note, that the thickness of thermal insulation products will vary depending on the climate of the area, as well as the characteristics of the house. For example, in Europe, the thickness of thermal insulation is from 5 to 7 cm, and in the northern regions, the minimum thickness of thermal insulation is 10 cm.
The work does not require many tools, the set is very simple:
This is one of the advantages of self-plastering - the available set of tools.
Installation of beacons
In order for the exterior plaster of the house to look good, beacons should be installed.
They will be required for the initial application of the composition. Installation is carried out as follows:
This will make it possible to determine the size of the skew and the location of the deviation. The surface can sink upwards, sometimes downwards.
To do this, apply the mixture vertically to the surface of the wall, and the gap should be 0.5 meters.
For novice craftsmen, the easiest way to install beacons will be on self-tapping screws with a fastening called "eared", since the solution is cheaper, but it sets very quickly, and certain skills are still needed for installation like this.
Important! Beacons are not installed at a layer that is less than 0.5 cm.
Application of the composition
The application of finishing solution is carried out in two ways - machine and manual.
For the first option, you will need to use special devices or involve craftsmen to perform the work.
Exterior wall plastering by hand is often divided into the following steps:
- Laying the starter layer. The prepared mixture should be thrown between the beacons, and gradually cover the entire area. If the beacons are correctly installed, then it will not be difficult to level the solution using the rule.
- Set the rule at the bottom and lift with smooth movements.
- Empty spaces should be filled with a solution, and then again go through the rule. The procedure should be repeated until the walls are finally aligned.
- Then you can proceed to adjacent areas.
Once dry, the beacons can be removed and the holes covered.
Apply a top coat in order to final level surface.
A reinforcing fiberglass mesh should be placed under it in advance. The principle will be to spread the mortar slowly over the entire surface with a wide spatula. To make the plaster of the walls differ in its texture, you can use devices that will leave traces, or you can buy a special textured mixture. The easiest way to make a "Fur coat" is from decorative types of facade material.
Good advice! Plastering the walls of the house is possible even without the initial leveling.
An excellent result is obtained precisely thanks to the "Fur coat" method, which uses a hand-held spraying machine. Such a coating will look extremely original.
If you want to make a smooth surface, you should rub each plastered area. To do this, use a spatula soaked in water to make circular movements. In order for the exterior plaster of the house to be even more expressive, it should be painted in a suitable color.
