Facade tiles with metal fasteners - features, DIY installation

A fairly new facing material, in terms of performance, refers to one of the types of ventilated facades. The tile is made on the basis of cement with the addition of various fillers to change the appearance and improve physical performance, there are options from gypsum. On sale there is a huge selection of facade tiles with imitation of brick or natural stone, clinker or with the original surface texture. The fixing of the elements is carried out using already installed metal clamps, along the perimeter the tiles are held together with a tongue-and-groove connection.

Advantages and disadvantages of facade tiles with metal fasteners

Like any material, new facade tiles have not only advantages, but also disadvantages.

We will try to give an objective characterization from the point of view of builders and consumers.

Advantages of facade tiles with metal fasteners

Durability, environmental friendliness, resistance to weathering, relatively light weight, ease of installation - all types of facade tiles have these qualities. The real advantage of the described material over the others is that installation is performed without the use of cement-sand mixtures directly on a wooden supporting crate. Due to the fact that the lathing can be installed on walls of all materials, the scope of use is also expanding. The absence of "wet" technologies makes it possible to carry out work at any time of the year.

Of course, if there is no precipitation. A wide choice in appearance almost does not limit the possibilities of designers and architects to choose the style of facade walls. Another advantage is that installation is simplified, work is completed faster. There is no need to carefully level the bearing surfaces, grind the seams, etc.

Disadvantages

Unfortunately, they are, and quite significant.

The first is that the cut off pieces of facade tiles significantly lose their fastening reliability. The fact is that the tile is fixed in only one or two places on the self-tapping screws for the clamps, and along the rest of the perimeter, the thorn-groove connection. When adjusting the tile to size, you have to cut it on the sides (one, two or three). Thorns and grooves are cut off, in these planes there is no fixation of the tiles to each other. How to minimize these consequences, we will tell you in the installation instructions, but we note right away that they cannot be called ideal.

Composition of tiles with metal fasteners

Second, the strength of upholstery with metal fasteners on a wooden lathing is much lower than on glue. The adhesive is spread over the entire surface of the tile and connects the facade walls to it into a single structure. The physical forces from the tiles are transferred to the solid facade walls, which increases the mechanical strength of the cladding. Facade tiles with metal fasteners "sag" over the walls. As a result, only the tile takes up the load, and this significantly reduces the resistance of the finish to mechanical damage.

For finishing the facade of a frame house, the use of front tiles with fasteners is just a find

The third drawback is that the tiles are fixed to wooden slats. Even thorough impregnation with modern antiseptics cannot protect them for a very long period of time. Lumber loses its original properties, fixation becomes unreliable, facade tiles begin to wobble. And this is the first sign of a violation of the integrity of the skin, which in the future can have sad consequences.

For what pay attention during the selection

The quality of facade tiling depends on two components: the professionalism of the builders and the honesty of the manufacturers.

Facade tiles with metal fasteners must fully comply with existing state regulations, technological processes cannot be violated.

Choice of facade tiles with fasteners

As for the appearance, it is all easier with this - select those options that will create the desired design style. But what technical nuances should you pay close attention to?

  1. Linearity of surfaces . Place several tiles flat back against each other. If there are gaps or wobbling - you have low-quality material in your hands, do not buy it.

  2. Connect two tiles to form castle . The spike should fit into the groove with little effort, it is not bad if you hear a click at the moment of a snug fit. If there is a gap between the spike and the groove or they fit very tightly, these are signs of poor workmanship.
  3. Pay attention to the fixing strength of the metal clasp to the tile of which sheet steel it is made. The thickness of the steel must be at least 0.

4 mm, the zinc coating must be uniform and without gaps. There should be no cracks in the places where the metal is poured with tile material. If the kleimer resembles paper in thickness and there are cracks at the edges of its joint, then such products were produced by unscrupulous companies.

Important! The price of tiles with metal fasteners starts at 900 rubles. / m 2 , it is significantly more expensive than ordinary cement counterparts.

For that kind of money, only demand high-quality materials.Together with flat elements, you should buy vertical and horizontal corners, the latter are used for finishing window and doorways. You should purchase a starting profile and self-tapping screws.

Technology installation of facade tiles with metal fasteners

The tiles can be installed both with simultaneous insulation of the facade walls (recommended option) and during major repairs of buildings. We will consider the first method of installation, they are used most often. The current energy prices are forcing homeowners to pay more attention to heat savings. In addition, recent federal laws require adherence to government standards to minimize heat loss.

The tiles are installed with self-tapping screws along the crate from a metal profile or from a board

Important! You need to start work with planning your actions, and the technology of laying tiles on kleimers requires a special trip.

The distances between the tile clamps may not match the dimensions of the insulation. This is an unpleasant situation. Before buying materials for insulation, pay attention to their width. The fact is that a counter-lattice for tiles will have to be attached to the crate for the insulation. The width of the insulation starts from 60 cm, not all tiles have the same distance between the clamps, and this complicates the process of making the lathing for fixing.

If you could not find suitable materials, then there are three ways out.

Process facing with facade tiles

  1. Insulation slabs will have to be cut in such a way that it is possible to fix the lathing to the size of the tile on the wooden planks between them. Not a very good way, the quality of insulation may decrease due to the appearance of gaps between the insulation and the slats. The fact is that it is very difficult to make a cut perfectly flat at home. In addition, the installation time increases, the amount of waste of expensive insulation increases.

  2. Lay the insulation not vertically, but horizontally; in the same position, make a crate for it. In this case, the slats for fixing the tiles are placed vertically. This solution is considered quite acceptable.
  3. The insulation slats are vertical, and the crate is horizontal under the tile. And this option for solving the problem does not cause comments from professionals.

Example of wooden lathing

How to proceed in each case depends on many factors, make a decision yourself or contact for advice from experienced builders.

Cover the insulation with a vapor barrier

Practical advice. If you are afraid to make a mistake with the marking of the lathing for the tiles, then we recommend using boards about 10 cm wide and 2 cm thick instead of narrow slats. By the way, they also compensate for the inaccuracies of the tile itself. Different batches may have deviations in size, and narrow slats do not allow compensating for them, the location of the cleaimer may not coincide with the position of the staff.

Once these problems have been resolved, you can measure and quantify materials. Calculations of materials are done in the usual way with a margin of quantity within 5-8%. Calculate linear meters of vertical and horizontal angles accurately. These architectural elements need to be sealed only with special factory additional elements, it is difficult to make them yourself. You will have to cut the tiles by hand, the corner of the joint will turn out to be open, there is a high probability of the formation of gaps in these places during minor vibrations of the structure.

The material cannot be considered new on the domestic construction market, it can be purchased from both domestic and foreign manufacturers. Facade clinker tiles have the highest physical properties among all types of building materials. Read more in this article.

For work you need a grinder with a diamond disc, drill, screwdriver, tape measure, hydraulic or laser level. It is better to make marks on the tile with a felt-tip pen; on an uneven front surface, the pencil lines are hardly noticeable.

In addition, during sawing, the dust from the disc makes them completely hidden - there is a high probability of getting a curved cut. For example, let's take the option of cladding a house with insulation. The insulation is made of pressed mineral wool and has a water protection. We only have to install the vertical counter-lattice and mount the facade tiles with metal fasteners.

Installation diagram

Step 1.

Mark the position of the frame rails. We have already mentioned that instead of slats, it is better to use boards - the increase in costs is small, and you can work calmly. If markings for facade panels do not require such precision (mounting holes are located along the entire length), then in the case of tiles, very high requirements are imposed on accuracy.

Step 2. Start installing the rails from the corners.

It is better to attach the corner piece and determine at what distance the first rail should be attached. Check its position not along a plumb line - take measurements along the entire height. The walls of the house may have a slight slope and the distance from the corner will increase. And this will already cause big problems during the installation of the tiles. Fix the counter battens to the battens with self-tapping screws or studs.

Self-tapping screws are better, nails have an unpleasant feature: during a slight expansion / drying out of the tree, they stretch out, which weakens the fastening force.

Step 3. Pull the rope between the outermost battens and fasten all the remaining slats along it in the marked places. Install additional slats near window and door openings. In these places, problems will surely arise during plating, the solution of which we will discuss below.

Step 4. Beat off the bottom horizontal line, try on the starting profile along it. The protruding parts of the vertical sheathing should be cut off. Fix the starting profile with self-tapping screws along the line. If there are no holes in it, then pre-drill them.

The starting profile can be made of aluminum or galvanized sheet iron, coated with durable powder paints to match the tiles. Pay attention that the ends of the profile do not rest against the corner elements of the cladding and do not interfere with its precise installation. Check the horizontal position of the profile again.

Step 5. Take the first corner piece and place it in the corner.

Pay attention to what position he is in - it is not too late to correct inaccuracies. Using a self-tapping screw, about 1.5 cm long, fasten the element through the hole in the cleamer to the rail.

Step 6. Next, the even flat tiles are installed.

Insert them into the tongue-and-groove connection until it stops; there should be no gaps between the individual tiles (except when they are made specifically for decorative purposes). Each tile is fixed with a clip on the next strip.

Step 7.

Install the second corner piece, fix it.

Basic details for installation

Step 8. Now you need to perform the most difficult work - accurately measure free area and cut off part of the tile along them. We have already mentioned above that during cutting, the tongue-groove connection is removed, the remaining parts of the tile are not securely fixed. Take measurements with maximum accuracy, during cutting you need to use a diamond disc for concrete (it has special slots for removing dust).

Practical advice when cutting tiles.

  1. During cutting, it is much more advisable to make a small margin of size, and then precisely fit with constant fitting. We advise those who do not have solid experience in performing this kind of work to do this.
  2. When marking, the lines will have to be drawn from the front side, and the tile, depending on the type, may have a very uneven surface.

To minimize the likelihood of errors, make at least three equidistant marker points along the length of the tile, and then connect them with one line. If they do not lie at the same distance from the edges, then check where there are violations.

  3. Do not cut the tiles yourself; have an assistant hold them. Take special care in the corners - this is where chips often appear.
  4. The disc is round, due to its configuration it is difficult to adjoin the right angle lines when cutting.

Work carefully, do not go beyond the permissible length in these places, otherwise a noticeable slot will remain. It is better to carefully break off the remaining few millimeters of the tile, and then carefully clean the right angle with the edge of the disc. In the same way, the length and width dimensions are adjusted by the edge of the disk. It takes a lot of time, but with the advent of practical experience, the process will noticeably accelerate.

Step 9.

In most cases, the trimmed area has only one fixation point - a tenon on the upper plane. This is not enough for complete reliability. We recommend to additionally fix the tiles to the wooden battens directly from the front surface. It is better to make holes in the seams, if there are none due to the design features of the material, then anywhere. The main thing is that it falls into the wooden lath.

Screw a long self-tapping screw into the hole made, preferably using rubber or plastic washers of the appropriate diameter. Then the hole is sealed with a sealant matching the color of the tile and becomes almost invisible.

Practical advice. There is a way to make the hole completely invisible. To do this, collect some of the fine chips remaining after cutting the tiles and gently press them into the top surface of the sealant.

In this case, the sealant must be fresh. Then carefully smooth the surface of the tile with a small brush. This method can only be used when the tiles have the same color throughout their entire thickness. If only its surface is painted, then you will have to select the color of the purchased sealant or customize it yourself using mineral dyes.

Make the final decision on additional fixation yourself on the spot, taking into account all the features of the facing.

If you are sure that the cut tiles will sit firmly in place, then you do not need to drill anything. After installing the top row, check the reliability with your hands, push, sway, etc.

How to fix facade tiles with metal fasteners

Step 9. In window and door openings, the top of the tile is cut to size taking into account the slope of the drain. Next, start finishing the slopes, you need to use special ready-made corners, they are sold complete with tiles.

This is the most difficult part of the facades. Each corner must be adjusted to the width of the slopes. Do the work very carefully, the ends of all corners should lie in one line and abut against the window or door frame. Minor gaps are then sealed with a sealant. In the upper part, these corners are fixed with clamps, and for the side ones, you will have to drill holes for individual screws.

The holes are, of course, sealed later.

Practical advice. If you have a whole number of tiles along the width of the opening, great, the architectural element can be left without additional finishing. And if the tile had to be cut, then it is better to attach platbands to the window openings in the future. There are a huge variety of the latter on sale, choose the ones that are suitable for yourself in appearance, weight and mounting method.

Practices recommend the same algorithm and the basement parts of the facade walls. Reputable manufacturers produce a complete set of tiles for various purposes, including basement ones. If the blind area of the house is located horizontally, then the algorithm for finishing the basement is no different from the above. If there is a slope, then the first row of tiles along the entire length of the house must be cut at an angle, which makes the work much more difficult.
