Types of false ceilings - application features, pros and cons
In the family of finishes for ceiling surfaces, the false ceiling received reputation for reliable, inexpensive and convenient decoration, through which it is possible to solve many problems in the apartment.
This is especially true for those situations where the quality of the concrete ceiling in the room is so terrible that gluing wallpaper sheets or laying tiles for the ceiling is simply ineffective.
As a rule, experts distinguish coverings in the form of false ceilings from simple suspended ceilings. In the latter case, the decor for the ceilings is always a detail of the interior of the apartment, and one of the features of the chosen style. Whereas the installation of a false ceiling usually pursues completely different goals:
- Close the ceiling surface by means of decorative cladding so that all wall and ceiling defects are reliably covered and shielded.
- Installation of a false ceiling, in contrast to a large number of suspended systems, provides minimal ceiling losses in the room, which is extremely valuable for old apartments, "Czech" and "Khrushchev" projects, where the floor level is rarely more than 2.5 meters.
- Most of the customers who choose false ceilings for their own home, and also try, first of all, to reduce the cost of decorative finishing of the ceiling.
There are currently no rigid and clear criteria that determine the device of a false ceiling, its dimensions and scope in modern construction science. It also happens that false ceilings are understood as simple suspended ceiling systems, using the term as a synonym.
Most of the masters refer to false ceilings only panel or tension structures, and therefore conflicts and misunderstandings often appear.
Good advice! When discussing the arrangement of a false ceiling with specialists or customers, it is best to detail the requirements and conditions of the work as much as possible.
By tradition, the issue of installing a false ceiling has nothing to do with the main interior and apartment design, the main task is to solve the question of how to hide flaws and construction defects in the cheapest and simplest way. For this reason, customers usually choose false ceiling options, in which the surface will look monotonously flat and even, with minimal loss in room height.
The selection of a suitable option for sealing the surface of concrete floor slabs with false ceilings begins with to measure ceiling geometry, identifying areas and areas where the slab began to sag or tilt the most.
If the difference in levels is more than 12 cm, for example, the tiled edge has dropped strongly, or there are wall defects in the ceiling area, then most likely, you need to install a false ceiling, but a full-fledged suspended type structure, for example, panel type. In other cases, you can install only one of the false ceiling options:
Except it happens that membrane sheets, or rather their installation on a false ceiling on problem ceiling ceilings, is considered a very laborious process. And although the costs (material) in this case are small, in order to correctly lay a false ceiling at a minimum height from a smooth slab of concrete, it takes a lot of patience and time.
To save height with a false ceiling The simplest and fastest method of arranging a false ceiling surface is the use of fabric or membrane ceilings. The construction of a false stretch ceiling is a frame for a plastic or metal profile, which is laid along the room perimeter at a certain height from the concrete floor slab.
The distance from the concrete to the installation level of the false ceiling is determined by the geometry of the walls and the profile height, a high quality French ceiling can be fixed at a level of 5 to 7 cm from the concrete surface.
A polyvinyl chloride canvas is pulled onto the frame sewn to the wall surface. The edges of the panel along the general perimeter of the room are sealed with a special tool into the mounting slot on the profile surface.
After straightening, heating and stretching the membrane, the false ceiling takes on a kind of perfectly flat mirror surface.
According to the reviews of those who already had the good fortune to use such a finish, the membrane false ceiling perfectly withstands all subsidence and movement of the ceiling slabs, if the PVC-type canvas of the required quality, then the coating can stand idle for at least 10 years. The advantages of these types of false ceilings include easy maintenance of surfaces, as well as the ability to quickly repair or even replace membranes.
By the way, it is on membranes that you can mount lamps without any restrictions and even glue photos and graphics. According to the reviews of the owners of false polymer ceilings, and the most significant disadvantage of the false PVC ceiling is its low thermal stability. For example, if a fake decor is mounted above the stove in the kitchen or above the fireplace in the hall, the PVC will quickly degrade, and will also lose elasticity and shade. Moreover, the presence of membranes overhead will block access to the ceiling space, and therefore all pipes, and especially water pipes or from air-conditioned systems, air ducts of ventilation systems covered with a false PVC ceiling, often cause condensation to accumulate.
Arrangement of a fake stretch ceiling made of fabric in many ways resembles a decorative finish made of a polymer-type membrane.
The only difference will be in the ceiling stretching method. If false ceilings based on PVC fit perfectly into the interior of a room with any design, then the fabric covering must be selected in accordance with the location of the window opening and the direction of the light flow.
Advantages and disadvantages of a plasterboard false ceiling. Simple suspended plasterboard ceiling structures are most conveniently installed on a conventional galvanized sheet metal frame. Drywall works well as a false ceiling for two reasons.
Firstly, a lining of a perfectly flat sheet, correctly laid on the ceiling surface, like a table, will provide the flattest possible surface of a false ceiling.
Secondly, the distance from the finish to the slab of the rough ceiling is limited only by the thickness of the metal profile. That is, if you have experience with the material and the proper skill, you can assemble a false ceiling at a distance of only 5-6 cm from the concrete slab. In the simplest version, metal profile strips for plasterboard slabs are installed on concrete by means of suspensions and "crabs". In this case, the height of the space behind the slabs that are laid is from 10 to 12 cm, but only if necessary, using an angle fixture, you can reduce the height to 6 cm.
After installing the drywall slab, it is required to prime, paint with snow-white paint or glue with wallpaper. The result is a perfectly flat surface that is almost indistinguishable from a simple whitewashed ceiling.
Better than a false ceiling made of plasterboard would be the option to cover the concrete MDF slabs with panels, plastic lamellas or even laminate. This type of slab is widely used for finishing in non-residential and utility rooms. With the help of PVC panels, it is more convenient to cover the ceiling space in the sanitary unit and the bathroom, concrete slabs are hemmed with MDF panels on the balcony, in the kitchen, in the garage or even in the hallway.
Please note that in all cases, panel-type materials are laid on wooden slats sewn to a concrete slab, and the slats should be 2-3 cm thick. horizon by means of a painting tension cord or a beam from a construction laser level. Of all the available false ceilings, this option will be the most affordable for self-assembly, even with little experience in performing such work.
Miron Alekseevich Korotenko, 49 years old, Suzdal: "A false ceiling needs to be chosen from materials that could be dismantled and returned as needed.I have the entire ceiling covered by means of polystyrene plates, which are glued to the lath of wood.
To remove the square, it is enough to gently pry the gluing points with a knife, and in 15 years it took three times and return the decor items to their places. I do not regret it, everything turned out very nicely, and it also became much warmer and less noise. "
Petr Anatolyevich Doronin, 23 years old, St. Petersburg: "For myself, I decided to make an acoustic false ceiling, very thin overlap between the floors. It was decided to glue the surface by means of cardboard plates - egg trays, and on top of them they simply pulled and fixed a cloth cloth.
Now, even if the neighbors from above turned on musical equipment, sound almost inaudible. "
German Sergeevich Zvonchuk, 65 years old, Armavir: " I think that you need to make a false ceiling exclusively from drywall sheets, the material is amazing. In the back room I made a false ceiling because of the cracks in slabs of concrete. I sewed the profile straight onto the concrete and laid the foam polyethylene, and also remained from the laminate laying. It was not even necessary to acquire drywall, the neighbor gave the trimmings and slab halves.
After assembly, I rubbed the inter-slab joints with putty, painted, and everything is already almost 5 years without comment. "
A false ceiling can be made from almost all materials, and often it is not necessary to buy expensive plywood or AXLE to cover a slab of concrete. most of it can be picked up from wood or linen trims available at hand. It is only required to additionally glue the wallpaper sheets, paint or revet them with any suitable material, from photo wallpaper or self-adhesive film. The effect will be no worse than that of proprietary suspended-type structures.
