Are you planning to renovate or build a new house and are wondering what to do with the exterior? Pay attention to vinyl siding - a very interesting and popular facade design option. The material is well suited for both an expensive country cottage and a simple country house. However, siding panels alone are not enough for finishing - you will need other parts, which are called additional elements. And today one of such elements will be considered - the finishing bar for siding.
Siding finish strip
Siding finish strip
First, let's get acquainted with the appearance and functions performed by the finishing strip and other additional siding elements.
Table. Finishing plank and other additional vinyl siding trim elements.
|Element name||Why this element is needed|
| Installed at the bottom of the trim and serves as a fastener for the first siding panel. The starting bar itself is fixed on the crate with self-tapping screws (it is also permissible to use nails if the frame is made of timber). When connected to the first siding panels, this additional element, as a rule, closes - it will not be visible from the outside.
H-shaped connecting bar
| Sometimes the length of the walls is longer than the length of the siding panels. In this case, it becomes necessary to increase their length by installing segments of certain sizes. For their tight connection with the main siding panels, an H-shaped bar is used. It is attached to the crate on the left and right with self-tapping screws. The outer side of the H-shaped strip, after joining with the siding panels, remains in sight, therefore the choice of its color should be approached responsibly.
Outside corner ledge
| joining siding panels on both sides of the outer corner. The product can be conditionally divided into visible and invisible parts. The first one covers the ends of vinyl siding panels, the second is used to fasten the planks to the wall. It is desirable that the color of the product be the same as that of all other additional elements.
Internal corner strip
| In its own way device and function, this additional element is similar to the previous one, but is used not for external, but for internal corners of the house.
| This an additional element is intended for edging and giving a finished look to window and door openings in the house. Also, the J-shaped bar is used in some cases for edging the pediment.
| In some cases the windows in the house are "recessed" in the opening. To finish them in such situations, a window strip is used, which plays the role of a slope.
| Applies to completion finishing the house with siding to seal the panels in a horizontal position.
A finishing strip is installed under the eaves. It is also sometimes used to secure window strips when working with openings.
| Installed above walls at home, provides rainwater drainage to the ground without moisture entering the siding panel finish.
| This additional element fixed at the bottom of the finish in the event that the house has a protruding basement. A hinged bar covers it and protects it from moisture.
| Used to close the internal sides of the cornice. Typically, some of the soffit planks are perforated to ventilate and prevent condensation and moisture.
Important! Corner external siding strips can be used not only on the corners of the house, but also in the places where wall finishes and window openings join.

The durability and attractive appearance of siding finishes directly depends on the quality and condition of the panels and accessories. Save them before installation in the form in which they came from production; compliance with the rules of transportation and storage will help you.
Therefore, let's get acquainted with them. To begin with, let's consider the main provisions that must be observed when transporting siding panels, finishing planks and all additional elements.
An example of how not to do
If, for some reason, it is not there, then the panels and additional elements must be laid face up, placing fabric or dense polyethylene between the individual parts.

Similar requirements apply to the storage location of the finishing strip and other details of siding trim.

Storage of siding trim elements
Important! Separately, it should be said that when carrying and working with finishing panels in low temperatures, you need to be careful - vinyl becomes more fragile and brittle, therefore the risk of damaging the finishing elements increases significantly.
Before proceeding with the installation of siding and finishing planks, it is necessary to prepare not only materials, but also tools to work with them. All of them are shown in the table below.
Table. Tools needed to work with siding panels and finishing planks.
|Tool name||Why is it needed|
Construction plumb line and nylon rope
| To control the vertical evenness of the walls.
Without these tools, it is impossible to make a high-quality lathing for siding and finishing bar.
| To control the position of those or other elements of lathing and trimming horizontally and vertically.
Roulette and ruler
| For holding length and distance measurements |
Scissors for metal
| For cutting the metal profile of the batten for siding |
Hacksaw with fine teeth
| For cutting vinyl siding and its accessories, including finishing planks |
| For punching holes in siding panels for mounting and fixing them with a finishing strip.
| For driving dowels and fitting some parts |
| For drilling holes in the wall for dowels, fixing the battens in place |
| For screwing in self-tapping screws when installing the finishing strip and other trim elements |
| For additional tightening or, conversely, unscrewing screws when installing the finishing strip | Rotary hammers
Important! When performing construction work, do not forget about personal protective equipment - glasses and gloves. Be sure to use them when cutting metal and drilling walls when installing siding.

How to make a crate for siding with your own hands
One of the most popular options for finishing the facade today is siding. The quality and durability of such a finish is ensured not only by the use of good material, but also by the presence of a strong and reliable frame. Do you want to get a basic knowledge of how to make a do-it-yourself siding crate? Then study this article.
Let's describe the process of installing the finishing strip for siding in the form of step-by-step instructions.
Prepare the walls of the house for the installation of battens and siding - get rid of old paint and plaster, remove all protruding elements.
Step 2. Form on the surface of the walls an even and strong lathing from a wooden bar or metal profile.
Step 3. Insulate the walls of the house with mineral wool.
Place it between the elements of the battens and secure with disc dowels. Pull the steam and windproof film on top of the insulation.
Step 4. Proceed with the siding installation process itself - install the starter, corner and H-shaped strips, start laying the panels themselves between them.
Installation of siding panels
Proceed with the installation of the finishing strip after installing the penultimate panel. Determine how many segments of this additional element you need and how long they should be. Cut with a fine-toothed hacksaw.
Step 6. Climb under the cornice along with one of the lengths of the finishing bar and install it is there so that the surface with the mounting holes is facing down, the siding panel lock is facing up.
Fastening a piece of the finishing strip
Important! For your own safety and convenience, install the siding finishing strip on a step ladder, or even better - on scaffolding.
Step 7. Secure the finishing strip in place with screws or nails. Fasteners must be anti-corrosive or made of suitable materials. Screw and hammer screws and nails, respectively, in the middle of the holes made on the finishing strip.
They are necessary to compensate for the longitudinal expansion and contraction of the additional element when the temperature changes. In this case, the interval between fasteners should be from 3 to 5 such holes.
The finishing strip is screwed in with self-tapping screws
Important! It is not necessary to tighten the screws to the end - leave a gap of about 1 mm between the screw head and the surface of the finishing strip. It can be sustained by putting in a 5 or 10 kopeck coin.
Measure the distance from the penultimate siding panel to the top edge of the finish plank. Subtract 3 mm from the resulting figure.
Step 9. Based on the measurement from the previous step, measure and cut the siding panel to the appropriate height. Then make rectangular holes in the upper part with perforating pliers.
The spacing between them should be 10 cm.
Create rectangular holes
Step 10. Climb under the cornice and insert the bottom of the last siding panel into the lock piece of the previous one. Then, gently slide the top edge of the panel (the one you made the holes in) into the fixing part of the finish strip. Check if the contact between them is reliable.
Installation of the last siding panel
After completing all the operations indicated above, carry out the installation and edging of the soffits that are necessary for finishing the interior parts of the cornice hanging over the wall.
The work is almost finished
Following the same principle as outlined earlier, install the finishing plank when laying the siding vertically. Only in this case, install the additional element together with the corner profile, while their fastening holes must match.

Securing the finishing and corner strips with self-tapping screws.
Install the fasteners in the middle of the holes and do not screw in all the way - leave a 1 mm gap to compensate for thermal expansion

Using the instructions above, you will successfully install the finish bar and end up with a beautiful and durable finish for your facade.
