from slope to fence - rules what you need to know? Review and Instruction + Video According to the existing modern legal norms of our state, every residential building and every public building must have ramps in order to provide people with limited mobility with free independent access to the building.

Ramp - two horizontal platforms located at an angle and at different levels. Their main task is to provide free movement of people with disabilities and to help parents with wheelchairs.

That is why the requirements for the ramp fencing, its dimensions, materials from which it is executed is strictly regulated by the letter of the law.

Kind of ramps

All ramps can be divided into two types: fixed and removable.

  • These are portable gentle slopes that can be used whenever necessary anywhere. Divided into:
  • Telescopic - convenient in that you can adjust the length.
  • Ramp - lightweight ramps, convenient for transportation.

  • Roll ramps - due to their ability to roll into a roll, they will easily fit into the car trunk.
  • Ramps in a car are a retractable structure, the operation of which is controlled by the driver of the vehicle.

Important parameters for arranging the ramp

What should be the angle of inclination?

The angle of the ramps is strictly is regulated by GOST and is indicated as a percentage. At the legislative level, it is determined that the angle should not be less than 8% and exceed 15%. Behind the scenes, a 10% slope is considered the best solution.

8-9% according to the legislation can be applied only if the height of a gentle slope does not exceed half a meter, and the length is 60 centimeters. However, such parameters cannot be applied to fixed ramps for long-term operation.

An angle higher than 10% is performed only if no other solution has been found in the design.

An angle of 5% is also considered acceptable, but only for rises of about 80 cm.

Ramp size standards

By By law, before and after ascent along a gentle descent, two horizontal platforms must be located, in size exceeding the size of a wheelchair.

In this case, the depth of the upper platform should be at least 140 cm if the entrance doors open inward, and at least 150 cm - if outward. In order for a disabled person in a wheelchair to turn around on the site, there must be at least 220 cm of space.

The width of the lift itself can also be different. If the ramp involves the movement of one disabled person, then its minimum width, according to the law, should be 85 cm (while it is recommended to choose a width of 90-100 cm when designing for greater comfort).

If the ramp is planned on the basis that a wheelchair user and a parent with a baby carriage can move at the same time, the width should be at least one and a half meters.

Sometimes a ramp with two-way traffic is installed, then the width is calculated by one and multiplied by two, that is, not less than 1m 80 cm. In this case, an obligatory condition is to install additional railings in the middle.

If the design of the ramp provides for several spans, there must be horizontal platforms between them, the size of which must allow the wheelchair to turn freely.

Guardrail for the ramp

On all ramps, the height of which exceeds 15 cm, and the length of 180 cm, it is necessary to put a fence. It is usually performed in the form of a railing.

They are installed on both sides of the descent, or only on one side if there is a wall on the other. The length of the handrail should be at least 30cm longer than the length of the path itself. According to the standard for adults, the height of the fence should be two-level - 70 and 90 cm. At the bottom of the span, a 5 cm high side is installed for the safety of the wheelchair user. The diameter of the handrail pipes is also regulated by law - 3-5 cm.

If the ramp is installed near a building with high traffic of people, it is best to create a fence made of concrete, it is more reliable and durable and supplemented with handrails.

! Important. The handrails of the railing must be made of a solid pipe and are at the same height from the ground throughout the descent.

The material from which the fence is made can be different. It is best to choose stainless steel products, because they are durable, easy to maintain (they do not need to be painted), look quite aesthetically pleasing, they are easy to install and are suitable for all types of ramps.

Price of the issue

Now in every city it is very easy to find a company that professionally installs ramps. Upon request, they will create a drawing for you and install a structure from almost any material. The main thing is to decide on the cost. What determines the price of a product with installation work?

! Important. If you decide to make a do-it-yourself ramp for the disabled, remember that in this matter it is very important to adhere to the norms and rules that are enshrined at the legislative level.

Allowing even the slightest deviation from the norm, you can make the product completely unusable.

  1. From the length of the fence. The longer the ramp, the more consumables will be spent on its manufacture.
  2. From additional safety elements that will be equipped with the ramp. This factor is important to take into account when the project provides for a product height of more than 1 meter.

The higher the security, the higher the cost.

  3. From the way the handrails are attached. If they are attached to the wall, the total cost will be lower.
  4. From the complexity of the project. If there is little space near the building and you need to calculate a complex structure with several spans to create a ramp, the final price will be higher than in the case of the simplest straight ramp.
