Front dowel - types, selection and installation by hand

Well-executed thermal insulation of any, especially a residential building is an important condition for the quality of a building and a comfortable living in it for a person. It is impossible to create the correct and comfortable microclimate in the house in the conditions of Russia (often unpredictable) without the presence of heat-saving materials. However, the installation process is not as simple as it seems - you cannot do without special fasteners, such as a facade dowel. How to use it and what types of it can be found in a hardware store?

What is it? Using dowels

Facade dowels are a special type of fastener that is used to fix, install various structures and materials, including heat-insulating materials, to the walls of buildings. It comes in different types, but the most often used is a poppet.

Most often, such fasteners are used when installing ventilated facades, for fastening structures made of metal profiles and facing material

The structure of the dowel is as follows: it consists of three elements - a retainer, a spacer and an anchor element. The spacer is a rod. The retainer is made of plastic, the anchor is made of polyamide.

The facade disc dowel got its name from the special shape of the cap - rather large, resembling a small plate or mushroom cap in shape. It is made either entirely of polymeric materials, or partially of metal.

Thanks to its use, it is possible to reliably attach insulation and other materials and structures to the facade of the house.

In general, the front dowel has a longer rod than other types of dowels. This is what makes it possible to use it for the installation of thick materials, products with a large section. Certain types of front dowels do have additional special antennae, which allows them to be securely fixed in soft and hollow products.

Note! The main difference between the facade dowel and the usual one is the exact correspondence of the geometry of the dowel itself and the metal screw.

Due to this, high indicators of the load withstand it are achieved.

Anchoring for thermal insulation with a galvanized rod

This element can be attached to building cladding, thermal insulation, metal profile structures, wooden structures, wall cabinets and so on. But most often it is used precisely for the installation of thermal insulation.

Note! Facade dowels can be used both for new buildings and old buildings with plaster facades. At the same time, do not be afraid that it will be bad to hold the fasteners on the plaster with the effect of a "soap layer" that has been saturated with dirt during the existence of the house.

On the contrary, it is often used even in the reconstruction of well-worn buildings.And completely old plaster can not even be cleaned off (only an easily falling off layer), which will save a lot of money.

For example, thermal insulation is attached to the facade with only one adhesive. Thus, it will hold on only due to a single binder, and if the paint and plaster begin to fall off, then the insulation material will fall off with them over time. But in this regard, the facade dowel has no "contraindications", it will allow you to achieve maximum adhesion of thermal insulation to the wall surface.

The fixation takes place precisely due to the wide "fields" of the head-plate of the fastener and the pressing effect of the core-screw.

Advantages of the facade dowel

Based on from the above, we can conclude that this dowel has a lot of advantages. It is not worth saving on its purchase.

  1. The materials fixed with these elements adhere much better to the facade of the house, even in windy conditions. The increased wind load is not at all scary for them if they are connected to the wall thanks to the dowels, since the fixation is very tight.

  2. The dowel itself is not afraid of temperature fluctuations - the risks of destruction of the connection when exposed to heat or cold tend to zero (for example, polymer fasteners will only compress and expand). In this case, the thermal insulation simply fixed to the adhesive layer can fall off. The temperature range in which the dowel can reliably serve varies from -40 to +80 degrees.
  3. The facade dowel is resistant to corrosion (and made of polymers and is not afraid of it at all), and also perfectly resists various mechanical influences.

Note! In order for the facade dowel to work out its resources as much as possible and most effectively keep what needs to be held on the wall of the house, it must be selected in accordance with the conditions in which it will have to work.

Its length is also taken into account.

Types of facade dowels

Facade fasteners are usually divided into two types - disc and anchor. The latter, as a rule, are used for mounting various brackets. And for cladding the facade, it is preferable to purchase exactly dowels with a wide head, since they most reliably fix various materials, including thermal insulation. This type of fastener has several different names.

Front dowel, disc or mushroom dowel - it can be called differently, but a professional builder will immediately understand what is at stake. Such disc dowels differ depending on the materials of manufacture.

The material used for manufacturing is nylon, polypropylene or cross-linked polypropylene with frost-resistant properties.

Moreover, nylon is considered one of the highest quality and most durable materials. Such a dowel will serve for a very long time. The spacer is made of two materials - either fiberglass, or basalt-reinforced plastic.

With metal nail

This type of dowel uses an uncoated metal nail. It is used for the installation of high density thermal insulation materials.

The advantages of using polymer fasteners:

  • low weight, due to which the wall does not receive additional load. This is especially true in relation to such building materials as aerated concrete, foam concrete;
  • fasteners are not afraid of moisture - such a dowel cannot damage corrosion;
  • flexibility and elasticity, due to which the dowel perfectly fixes the insulation and other facade materials;
  • "cold bridges" do not appear - walls in the places of fastenings will not freeze during severe frosts;
  • low price.

This dowel has many advantages

Tip! Nylon and polyethylene dowels are usually used for mounting light materials on surfaces with voids (hollow concrete, hollow brick). But polypropylene dowels are great for attaching expanded polystyrene or foam.

Advantages of dowels with a nail:

  • the most durable;
  • perfectly capable of holding very dense and heavy materials;
  • dowels with a thermal head not subject to corrosion.

The main disadvantage of metal dowels is their thermal conductivity. In winter, they will create "cold bridges", because of which the walls will freeze through more, and a gap will appear in the thermal insulation system. To prevent this from happening, a special thermal head is made of polymer materials for such dowels. It will protect the facades from moisture penetration, and the house from heat loss. Usually, for the manufacture of such a head, impact-resistant glass-filled polyamide is used, which has a minimum thermal conductivity.

Making the right choice

From how correct dowels will be selected for certain works and materials, their durability directly depends, and the quality of work - the reliability of fastening materials on the surface of the facade wall.

You should not save on the purchase of front dowels, because it is thanks to them that it is sometimes possible to securely fix materials on the wall where glue or other substance / product cannot cope. For example, in windy regions or where there is frequent rain or critical climatic conditions.It should be borne in mind that some heat-insulating materials absorb water well, due to which their mass significantly increases and, accordingly, the load on the supporting structures increases. Often only dowels can hold the insulation and other materials.

Use of dowels in a ventilated facade system

But before purchasing facade dowels, it is important to choose them correctly. In this case, it is worth considering the following:

  • what material they will be attached to, that is, what the facade is made of. There are special fasteners for concrete, brick and other building materials;
  • thickness of the fixed insulation, as well as its type;
  • weather and climatic conditions in the region, including humidity;
  • the height of the building (especially strong fastenings are used for high-rise buildings).

Note! The marking on it will help determine the characteristics of the dowel.

How to use

Work with facade dowels should be carried out at a positive temperature, so it is best to have time to install them in the summer. The number of elements will directly depend on the size of the house that will be sheathed. Moreover, the larger the object, the more dowels will be needed.

It is recommended to adhere to the following rules:

  • when installing foam insulation, polystyrene 1 * 0.

    5 m in size or stone wool insulation with dimensions 80 * 62 cm, the consumption of dowels will be from 4 up to 14 pcs. / m 2 .

  • when installing mineral wool insulation (slab dimensions 1 * 0.2 m), the consumption of fasteners will be from 4 to 10 pcs. / m 2 .

Dowels for fastening insulation

Attention! The facade dowel for thermal insulation is often installed in the area where the insulation plates are joined. Thus, it will be possible to achieve maximum fixation of the material on the facade.

Fastening the facade dowel can be done in different ways - drilling, hammer drilling, drilling by means of rotation. In many ways, the choice of method will depend on the material of the facade. So, drilling or percussion drilling is used on a concrete wall, a facade made of solid bricks, concrete blocks.

Rotary drilling is used on walls made of lightweight concrete, hollow blocks, hollow bricks or with vertical voids.

Tip! For the installation of dowels, new, not worn out drills should be used - the speed of work will largely depend on this.

The umbrella dowel fixes the insulation on the wall

When attaching the facade dowel, it is very important to observe the geometry of the drilled holes - they must be made strictly perpendicular to the plane of the facade. This is especially important for walls made of light and soft materials. And before you insert the dowel into the finished hole, you should remove all the debris from the latter with a drill.

Installation of the fastening element is carried out flush with the surface of the insulation or with a slight depression. In the latter case, the dowel head is putty at the end of the work.

Attention! If the dowel head protrudes above the surface of the insulation, then in order to achieve a perfectly flat surface of the facade, you will eventually have to putty the entire wall.

Mounting of this type of dowel does not generally differ from the usual fixing.

Step 1.

A hole with a diameter of 10 mm is drilled in the insulation material fixed on the wall using construction tools. Its depth in the load-bearing wall must be at least 10-20 mm greater than the length of the anchor element.

When front dowels, you should pay attention to their manufacturer. The quality of the work largely depends on how high-quality the fasteners are. And good products can only be purchased from trusted manufacturers. However, for fastening materials such as mineral wool or penoplex, you can also use dowels from domestic manufacturers - in general, such products are not inferior in quality to those produced abroad, but they are cheaper. For example, you can purchase dowels from the "Biysk fiberglass plant".

Many good reviews about Izo products manufactured by Tech-Krep.Such dowels are perfect for installing thermal insulation on a brick, concrete wall.
