Quite often customers, buyers and simply lovers of decorating their homes very often fall into a mess, considering the glazed porcelain stoneware tiles and glazed porcelain stoneware to be the same type of coating.

In fact, such a material does not at all look like shiny ceramic tiles, and it is mainly in terms of properties and technology of creation, although at first acquaintance they can be easily confused.

Polished porcelain stoneware looks very beautiful, but will wear out much faster than tiles.

Glazed type porcelain stoneware - what is it

Classic ceramic-type tiles made from clay raw materials are covered with a specialized mineral coating and fired at a glass transition temperature of +1000 degrees ..

. The formation of the glaze to avoid cracks is done in several ways. As a result, a very thick, perfectly smooth and flat coating is obtained.

The glazed material is made according to a slightly different scheme:

  • A complex mixture, which contains feldspars, is pressed with a stamp to shape with a degree of reinforcement up to 500 kg per 1 square cm.
  • A raw porcelain stoneware blank is fired at +1260 degrees, slowly cooled at a certain temperature level.

  • The cooled material undergoes special processing, including mechanical processing, which results in a very beautiful texture and relief.
  • At the final stage, the enamel layer is applied by smalting.

Glazed type porcelain stoneware is obtained after the re-firing process. Moreover, depending on the combined conditions of chemical and mechanical processing, the surface can acquire a polished appearance, have a waxy or semi-matt shine. The appearance of glazed type porcelain stoneware only benefits from this treatment.

The glazed semi-matt stone is ideal for decorating steps.

Differences between unglazed and glazed material

The procedure itself for additional processing of the pressed type material was originally conceived as means for stabilizing and preserving the texture and color of the surface. Unglazed material, especially on the surface of the steps in the lobby or porch, quickly rubbed off with dust and lost its original color. Glazed materials, due to smalting, receive a protective layer that will prevent the accumulation of mud and salts, which are solutions in water. Both types of porcelain stoneware can retain almost zero moisture absorption and high frost resistance.

Note that the only significant difference will be the different microscopic surface hardness. The higher the gloss, the lower the hardness. For example, glazed or polished porcelain stoneware has a hardness of 5-6 points on the Mohs scale, a simple unglazed material can easily give out 7. 8-8 points.

Varieties of glazed porcelain stoneware

Depending on the thickness of the smalt, the depth and method of processing the vitrified layer distinguish 4 main types of surface.

You can add to the list:

Moreover, porcelain stoneware used for flooring under a stone of natural origin is almost always subjected to additional retification.

Glazed tiles are cut according to a template so that after laying on the floor, the impression of a solid, unified surface of natural stone will be created.

Matt flooring material

Glazed matt porcelain stoneware must be distinguished from fired material without any coating. On the surface of the matte type there is a thin layer of smalt, which will give a fuzzy, diffused, but perfectly visible reflection. Non-glazed tiles do not have a glint at all. A slightly noticeable reflection is indicated by the presence of smalt on the stone surface.

Tiles with a matte surface will not undergo further processing, except for mechanical trimming. The glazed material will not slip even when fully covered with moisture. The smalt layer becomes very soft after firing so that it can be leveled and refined by grinding and polishing. This gives the glaze a depth of color and a beautiful sheen. The polished flooring material becomes very slippery when even a small amount of water gets on the glazed surface.

the material will require special protection and care for the layer that is polished.

Semi-polished material

For this category, a special version of the tile is used, in which, before applying smalt and firing, the surface was subjected to an inhomogeneous relief type - textures. During the polishing process, the glaze will be processed unevenly, resulting in a very beautiful texture with a heap of matte and polished areas. In order to obtain a soft glow on the glazed surface, a special type of smalt coating is used, which contains a large number of transparent crystals. After firing, they are usually ground and polished in the usual way, but the glint has a fuzzy, slightly blurred outline.

Glazed coating - slippery or not?

Of all the types of material listed above, non-slip can be matte and conditionally "wax" porcelain floor will not slip even after cleaning or the appearance of water. An exception can only be viscous substances, for example, oil, detergents or pieces of clay soil, which are brought with shoes to the porch steps. The wax type of coating is considered more traumatic, in simple slip conditions, as such, it is not observed, but there is a chance to slip in wet shoes.

How to make the right choice

Glazed polished material is recommended for indoor use. It is less slippery than natural gabbro or granite, but at the same time it has low resistance to sand and dust, since the surface quickly wears out and becomes semi-matte.

Most often, semi-gloss stones are chosen for the house.

Glazed porcelain stoneware - what is it and how is it different Matte stone is more suitable for decorating the porch, which practically does not lose its appearance, does not absorb moisture and will not be afraid high load wears out. Semi-matt porcelain stoneware tiles and wax are ideal for interior decoration. Such a surface is beautiful in itself, and therefore it makes no sense to apply it outdoors, where the glazed layer begins to quickly fade to a matte state. Large format glazed marble tiles.

Glazed type material is a new material on an old base, and it does an excellent job of being a simpler and cheaper substitute for natural stone. Given the high resistance to moisture and excellent appearance, rectified porcelain stoneware tiles can easily replace kitchen floor tiles or even Italian ceramics.

Customer Reviews

Semyon Petrovich, Moscow: shoes with leather soles. I have porcelain tiles in the hallway, matte, and the surface is rough and hard. When you go fishing, you need to take your boots with you, otherwise you will not endure the black lines.

Vasily Antonovich, Rostov-on-Don: "Glazed matte porcelain stoneware can be laid only if you have your own house with a veranda and stone steps. there is nothing to do, the carpet will not hold, if something is dropped on the floor - immediately to smithereens. The tile is beautiful, but at best it is suitable for the bathroom, and even then, only with a wax-type gloss, otherwise water stains will be noticeable, as in the palm of your hand.
