General information

Wax or oil

Both products are used to protect wood from mold, moisture, fungal colonies, bugs and rot. Both wax and oil have been used since time immemorial and have consistently produced excellent results. They help to improve the appearance of the wood and increase its durability and strength. Impregnating oils for woodworking have high antiseptic properties, they penetrate deeply into the wood structure, making its surface elastic.

They help keep the wood from drying out, do not clog pores, and allow surfaces to breathe and regulate moisture levels. Wood oils are harmless to humans, and are also considered the most environmentally friendly methods of protecting wood, together with wax.

Of the oils that are most often used to impregnate wood with their own hands, we note:

Some people prefer to use sunflower oil for wood impregnation, but it has the worst effect. The reason lies in polyunsaturated fatty acids - there are very few of them in sunflower. Waxing is the oldest method for protecting wood from moisture ingress. The wax fills the pores of the wood and gives it a matte color.

Its only drawback is that the treated wood has no "breath".

Please note that it is impractical to work with pure wax, and therefore it should be dissolved in vegetable oil, for example, in flaxseed oil, and other additives (turpentine) are also added to the composition. Such work is quite lengthy, and therefore the impregnation of wood with oil-type compounds is considered an ideal option for protecting it from rot, moisture and mold formation.

Advantages and disadvantages of oil impregnation

Treating wood with oil-based compounds has many advantages, and these are:

  • Environmentally friendly.
  • Beautiful appearance of the finished product - oiled surfaces, after excellent polishing, obtain a matte sheen, and also become velvety to the touch.

  • Ease of processing.
  • The material is very affordable.
  • Relatively low cost.
  • Fast restoration of mechanical damage. It will be enough to re-process the pieces of furniture or ceilings / floors / walls, and scratches will disappear immediately.

Oil impregnation will be an excellent option for protecting products from expensive or even exotic wood species, houses or other structures made of logs, pieces of furniture that are exposed to moisture.

The problem is not even how to apply oil to wood, but something else:

  • Surfaces are very demanding to maintain, and this will concern furniture items, as well as walls, ceilings and floors. They should be soaked every 3-4 months and then polished thoroughly.
  • Treated surfaces are vulnerable to grease and grease stains are highly visible, and re-treatment will remove them.

Consider all oils separately


Tung Oil

This is a very ancient product that was used to protect wooden interior surfaces from rot, moisture and woodworm beetles.

They can handle ceilings, floorboards, pieces of furniture, trims and even dishes.

Please note that during the reign of the king, oil was used to decorate extremely valuable types of wood, from which extraordinary interior items were made. This is due to its incredible ability to penetrate extremely quickly into the surface layer of wood, as well as to reveal its texture as much as possible.

Before starting work, tung oil must be mixed, and work is best carried out at an air temperature of +16 degrees. At values ‚Äč‚Äčthat are lower, the composition begins to thicken, which means that the consumption will increase (usually it is about 0.

1-0. 15 kg per square meter). Application is carried out in a very thin layer with a brush. Next, you need to let the oil soak for 1/3 hour, and then take a sponge or rag and rub the rest into the wood along the fibers. Remove excess.

To increase the absorbency, the oil can be diluted with white spirit up to 40%. The product will be ready for use in a day. It is important that all used oily rags should be disposed of as household waste. Hand grease can be washed off with warm soapy water.

Teak oil

This product is versatile and can be used on interior wood surfaces (ceilings, floors, railings, decorative items , stairs and the rest), and outdoor (gazebos, facades, garden furniture, decorative figures for landscape design).

Ideal for processing oak, mahogany, beech and other types of wood that are considered valuable. It is teak oil that is an environmentally friendly product, and it contains linseed oil, as well as tung oil + refined pine turpentine. Oil has nothing to do with teak. By the way, this composition cannot be diluted, and before starting it, you should only stir it well or shake the jar.The product is also perfectly recommended in humid rooms, and therefore it can be used to process valuable wood species in the bathroom.

Tar oil

How to apply oil to wood - material processing technique This is one of the most natural antiseptics for DIY woodworking. It contains stump resin, linseed oil and pine turpentine. By the way, the latter improves the penetration of the composition into the wood, and linseed oil will hold, preventing it from coming to the surface. The composition is actively used for processing the bottom of berths and boats.

It is also used for external impregnation of log buildings, garden furniture and garden houses.

The properties of this oil are similar to tung and teak. It helps to provide excellent protection for wood surfaces from rot, moisture, bugs, and at the same time gives the wood a transparent texture. The technology of work is similar to that with teak and tung oil - per square meter of well-plastered surface, you need from 0.1 to 0. 15 liters of the product.

For impregnation of the walls of a log house, 5-10 liters per square meter are needed. The treated surface dries up to a week, and the duration will depend on both the quality of the wood and the surrounding conditions. When applied in one layer, the drying time is only a day, and the product cannot be diluted, but it should be thoroughly mixed before use. Store this oil in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place. They will not be afraid of freezing, and they also perfectly retain all their properties in frost.

Flax oil

I wonder how many layers of oil should be applied to wood. It all depends on the selected composition. By right, the best and cheapest means for protecting wood surfaces is linseed oil. It has high waterproofing qualities, and is also designed for the treatment of internal and external surfaces. It can be used to impregnate wooden facades, wall surfaces, platbands, ceilings, furniture and other interior elements, and it also perfectly reveals the texture of wood, gets into the smallest cracks, preserves wood, and creates a water-repellent durable layer on the surface.

When impregnated, linseed oil thickens under the influence of environmental factors (oxidative processes and low temperatures). Triglycerides - linolenic and linoleic acids will actively contribute to this.

Please note that linseed oil dries longer than the others listed - up to 21 days, depending on the number of layers applied. If you add wax, tar or turpentine there, the process will be slightly accelerated.

Impregnation at home

It is worth considering the process using the example of linseed oil, because it is the cheapest and most affordable for ordinary craftsmen.

To work, you need a small list of useful items:

  • A brush made of natural fibers, a soft cloth, a foam sponge, a rag and a rag.
  • Oil and mixing stick.
  • Building hair dryer and metal brushes for removing old coatings.
  • Sandpaper to make the surface perfectly flat.
  • Broom to remove dust from the surface.

  • Gloves to avoid getting dirty.

Impregnation technologies

Wood can be oiled using different methods. Some people like smearing and rubbing, while others prefer soaking. True, the second method is more suitable for small-sized objects - figurines and decorative dishes.

Preparation stage

The preliminary preparation of surfaces will be an important stage. For alignment, you need to carefully sand the figures or dishes. It is assumed that they are only carved from wood and are not covered with anything on top. Otherwise, you will need to remove both the varnish and the paint, and this is long and dreary.

For larger areas, you will need to do the following:

  1. Strip off the old coating. It's about paint or varnish. Use a wire brush, putty knife, and if the paint does not peel off, heat it with a building hair dryer. When it starts to bubble, pry off the layer with a spatula and remove.
  2. Sand the surface.

    Use two types of sandpaper for this.

  3. Remove dust. Brush it off with a soft broom or use the simplest rag, and even with the beginning of oil impregnation, no dust should remain on the surface.

Let's look at another way to apply oil to wood.


The simplest method to protect wood from decay and moisture is to oil it.

This is best done with a rag. You can also use a brush with natural bristles, and this is important for a small processing area.

Saturate walls, ceilings and floors with a soft cloth soaked in oil. We do it like this:

  • Stir the oil and pour a little into a separate container.
  • Moisten a cloth and start soaking, and apply along the grain.

  • Leave the oil on for a short time, 15 to 20 minutes. Next, remove the remnants with an old rag.
  • Let the surface dry, and then repeat the treatment.

And one more method.


This method is suitable for small items.

Pour oil into a container and place a pre-cleaned wood product in it. The aging period is unlimited, and ideally, you should hold the figurine / plate / knife handle until air bubbles stop appearing from the wood. Then take out the product, put it on the table, which is covered with clean paper, tilt it slightly so that excess oil is glass. Then polish everything with a rag. Pure linseed oil without additives will dry out for a long time - up to 21 days.

This is also a plus - the depth of such impregnation is large, and the wood will be perfectly protected from mold, moisture and rot. If you really want to see the finished product, add beeswax to linseed oil, which will speed up the process.

Recipe for linseed oil wax + oil:

  • Heat the oil until smoke appears.
  • Pour the grated wax into it.
  • Mix, and when everything is dissolved, pour the composition into a jar.

  • Add a little juniper oil to add a pleasant aroma to the mixture.

The ratio can be different. Use 10 measures of oil and 1 measure of wax to create a thin layer for the floor. Processing with such a composition is carried out 3-4 times. Compositions based on oil and wax 3: 1 or 4: 1 are suitable for treating walls.

"Wax + oil" 1: 1 are suitable for processing ceilings, and the layer of the product will be thick, maximally protect against moisture penetration, and also excellent resistance to mechanical damage. But the ceiling is not threatened by extraneous influences. For this reason, a 1: 1 flaxseed oil-based formulation is the best option. Oil impregnation of wood is a cheap way to protect against various aggressive factors. Compared to industrial antiseptics, it comes out very cheap, safe and of high quality for health at all stages of work.
