How to chisel concrete with your own hands: a hammer drill or a wall chaser? How to do it correctly: Step-by-step instructions + Video Most often, people start thinking about chipping concrete when they start to make repairs in new housing, or they want to remake something into old. Concrete is a durable material, especially if it still has reinforcement, but if you want to install additional sockets, electrical wires or other pipes, then you cannot do without it.

Consider the norms and standards where it is possible to do chasing, and where it is strictly prohibited, what tools will be needed and much more.

If you have planned work, be sure to draw up a diagram and do not forget to photograph everything, as it will be useful to you in the future.

Features of the process

As we have already said, gating is done in order to lay electricity, make new sockets or switches.

Special grooves must be made. Before starting work, study the regulatory documents. If you break the load-bearing walls, you can not only pay a fine, but also harm your neighbors' homes.

Do not make horizontal channels in houses from panels, as this will damage the reinforcing materials. It is not allowed to make grooves in the seams adjacent to the stairs, if this affects the floors.

The only option in these cases is to work on plaster.

Wall slitting is done only in horizontal and vertical directions. The width and depth of the groove should not exceed 25 mm. According to SNiP 3. 05.

06-85, it is necessary to deviate from:

  • How to chisel concrete with your own hands: a hammer drill or a wall chaser? How to do it correctly: Step-by-step instructions + Video - gas equipment - more than 40 cm,
  • - floor slabs - up to 15 cm,
  • - windows and doors - more than 10 cm.

The work process also depends on the material, where it is necessary to make a strobe. For example, in plaster, this can be easily done using a chisel and hammer. But if you need to work with concrete, then you need special tools.

Do not forget to prepare before work.

Find the places where the old wiring was carried out, this will save you from getting into electricity. If you don't know there is no wiring diagram, then you can use an indicator. Remove the old wall covering (wallpaper, paint, plaster). So that the whole house or apartment doesn't get dusty. Be sure to hang a wet rag or special on the door.

Materials and tools

Ideally, you need to invite specialists who will do all the necessary work, but you can do everything yourself.

You need special tools. If possible, use a strober, when choosing, pay attention to its power. You can also cut through the wall with diamond circles, but some parts still have to be knocked out by hand.

A lot of holes can be drilled, but this is a rather tedious job. As you can imagine, there are many options for what tools you can use.

IMPORTANT: it is not necessary to buy expensive tools, you can just rent them.

When carrying out work, first find out what the wall is made of. This will allow you to find out if there are fittings and approximately how and where they are located, the location of the electrical wiring, and the choice of tool also depends on the surface material.

The easiest will be the slitting of aerated concrete or foam concrete. It is bubbly, so it is easier to destroy it than a monolithic structure. After your strobe is ready, do not forget to cover it with a small layer of cement, and also repair any excess potholes. This will provide an additional protective surface.

The most difficult will be the slitting of reinforced concrete.

The work is complicated by the fact that fittings are laid in the wall. Only specially designed equipment should be used here.

When shopping for tools, please note that it is best to immediately purchase attachments that will be useful on different surfaces.

Tips from experts

How to chisel concrete with your own hands: a hammer drill or a wall chaser? How to do it correctly: Step-by-step instructions + Video It is best to have a special device that shows location of electrical wires and fittings. It is inexpensive, but in this case you do not have to buy additional attachments for metal carving.

On some tools, it is already provided by the manufacturer, but experts note that it often fails and it is better to buy it separately.

On the Internet, you may stumble upon craftsmen who offer to perform work with tools that are not at all suitable for this kind of activity. They may recommend removing covers, protectors, etc. Remember, safety is very important! In order not to get injured, listen only to professionals.

Since the process is very dusty, take care to protect the skin and upper respiratory tract.

It is better not to carry out work without glasses and a respirator.

Old grandfather's methods

The easiest way is to find a hammer and chisel, they are probably in every home. We do preliminary markup. Using a chisel, we make indentations. Then we direct the point across and beat off the top of the wall using a hammer.

We work strictly along the line that we have outlined. We go deeper along the entire length by 2.5 cm. The greatest advantage is the ease of accessibility of tools. But there are much more disadvantages: it takes a lot of effort and time, the contours of the deepening are uneven.

This option is best suited for plastering work.

A drill can speed up the work somewhat. But here you will need to drill holes every 15 mm. The resulting contours, then you need to trim with a chisel.

Concrete structures and bricks can also be gouged using this method, but be prepared for the fact that you need to allocate much more time, and the edges will be uneven.

Working with a punch

There are some peculiarities for a punch: for a start, use a wide, but short drill. Make holes every 1-1.5 cm to the depth that you need. When all the holes are ready, a blade is put on the perforator, the impact mode is turned on, and all the holes obtained are connected.

The pluses include the fact that with such work there is not much dust.

He can also easily make a strobe in the corners with a puncher, when using a grinder or a wall chaser is impossible to do.

The track itself turns out to be uneven both along the edges and when deepening. Do not forget about the noise that the residents of the house do not like very much.

If you have special attachments, using a punch, you can make a groove in a brick and even a concrete wall.

To make the edge smoother, you can use a grinder in addition to the puncher.

Put a diamond disc on the grinder, thanks to it you can work with bricks and concrete.

Make two cuts for the entire width of the groove, they should be parallel to one another. Use a punch to deepen the groove as we wrote above. This way you get smooth edges and good channel depth.

Disadvantages: a lot of dust, but with an industrial vacuum cleaner this can be corrected.

To immediately work with a grinder and a vacuum cleaner, you need an assistant. The closer the vacuum cleaner is to the strobe, the less dust will be. After work, ventilate the room well.

Strob cutter

Considered a professional tool for creating strobes. The tool has 2 discs, the distance between the discs can be adjusted.

Thus, 2 incisions are made at once. You can also adjust the depth. There is a casing on the chaser, which is tightly adjacent to the wall, and a vacuum cleaner is also attached, then the process can be considered dust-free work. It is important during work that old wallpaper does not remain on the walls, as they clog under the casing and clog the vacuum cleaner.

Remains of concrete are removed with a hammer drill.

This method is the most expensive. Most often, only professionals have such tools. The wall chaser can make holes for pipes up to 5 cm in diameter.

Strob under the wallpaper

Sometimes it is necessary to make a rut right under the wallpaper. To do this, you need to remove a small strip of wallpaper.

We retreat more than 5 cm from the future track, and make an incision with a clerical or assembly knife. If you need a horizontal groove, then make an incision higher.

Soak the wallpaper, bend it and attach it using scotch tape. The resulting area where the work will take place should be more than 10 cm. We use only a perforator or a wall chaser to avoid a lot of dust.

After the work, we lay the wires, putty and wait for everything to dry, then glue the wallpaper to its original place. Do this very carefully so as not to ruin the wallpaper. The same work is carried out if it is necessary to chisel the walls for sockets.

Outlets and finishes

To make a hole for an outlet or switch, follow steps:

  1. Drill a 0.8 cm hole in the center.

Use a crown to cut. This will be the outline of our outlet or switch.

  2. Drill 8 to 10 small holes along the contour.
  3. Without force, make a hole using a crown. When working, do not damage the reinforcement, this can lead to the destruction of the walls.

If the socket is not high from the floor, then the wires can be hidden under the floor.

When all holes are ready, clean everything well from dust. We lay the cable, putty (gypsum, plaster, alabaster powder) close up the strobe, carefully align everything. We glue the wallpaper on top.
