How to drill porcelain tiles at home
Due to the excellent aesthetic and functional properties of porcelain tiles in recent For 10 years it has gained immense popularity. To get the best performance, only professional tools should be used. One of the tools without which you can't even imagine working with a porcelain stoneware slab is a drill. Standard drills in this case will not work, and then it becomes necessary to use special tools.
Let's take a closer look at the features of these products, which will help to drill porcelain stoneware tiles on the floor and wall.
Many people know about the excellent properties of porcelain stoneware - its resistance to mechanical damage and abrasion, increased level of strength, frost resistance, water resistance, uniformity , fire resistance, slip resistance. But there is the main difficulty due to which some refuse to work with this material - its fragility. In Italy, such a tile is called nothing more than a stone-porcelain ceramic product.
To drill a tile from this material, you must understand the relationship between fragility and hardness. Drilling a tile from porcelain stoneware will become accurate and effective only after all the physical and chemical properties of the material are taken into account.
Please note, that, according to professionals, if the drilling operation is performed incorrectly, there is a high probability of chipping, and such a defect is difficult to make invisible and does not look aesthetically pleasing.
Porcelain stoneware can be drilled using such types of tools as:
Diamond type drills for porcelain stoneware can be conventionally classified by the type of base.
This is the classification according to the manufacturing method:
By the type of cutting edge:
By field of application:
Now it's worth figuring out what other tools you may need in the course of work.
Specialists who are engaged in drilling porcelain stoneware sometimes use additional equipment, namely centering devices for diamond crowns, ballerinas, centering type device for diamond core drill, balloon for temperature reduction of diamond core / drill bits, liquid type core, jig. For work, be sure to prepare a drill or screwdriver, perhaps it will not be superfluous and a holder for a drill.
Interestingly, ballerinas are used only when it is required to drill a very large hole in porcelain stoneware tiles. They should be fixed in the drill in the same way as the drill.
The centering type device is used to minimize the risk of crown displacement.
For one-time work, it is allowed to quickly create a device from wooden or plywood pieces (you will need to drill holes of the required size in them).
The jig is a professional type device in order to perform the most accurate perforation on porcelain stoneware tiles. It is used to accurately guide the drill to a given point. The liquid-type core drill / bit temperature lowering balloon is used to cool the devices with a constant pressure of water.
So, how to drill porcelain tiles? It is recommended to do this from the front side.
In order for the drill resource to be used economically, holes sometimes need to be drilled 2/3 of the total thickness of the tile, and 1/3 that remains must be knocked out by a strong blow. At the same time, chips often appear on the back surface of the tile, which, if allowed, are only on the condition that they will be invisible. To do this, we drill from the front side. The chip obtained in which case is not terrible, since after laying the tiles, it will not be visible at all.
It is best to use a drill stand or drilling machine to punch the material.
Due to such convenient devices, the service life of the drill will be increased and the work will be greatly simplified, and the hole will turn out to be accurate and beautiful. A two-speed drill should be used, as when punching porcelain stoneware with a diamond drill, a high rotation speed is not required. The use of an impact drill is not recommended, as the tiles may split. If you are using a punch, turn off the hammer function.
Before starting the process, do not forget to place plywood or fiberboard under the porcelain stoneware so that you do not accidentally damage the surface of the table or floor with the drill.
Also, make sure that the drill is only directed vertically and do not slope too far towards the slab.
During the working process, the drills heat up very quickly, and to prolong their service life, they need to be constantly cooled. Cooling can be done at home using a container of water that is covered with a lid. Several small holes should be made in it, and water will be supplied to the drill in small portions. You can also use a special balloon for this, and this is the method called wet drilling.
If all the work is done correctly, then only a carefully drilled element will fall out of the plates, which will correspond to the diameter of the drill. Naturally, drilling a recess in a porcelain stoneware tile will be much more convenient on the floor or wall when it has already been removed, and much more difficult to do directly on the wall. In this case, we recommend using a ballerina or a crown, and the hole will not be located close to the edge of the tile.
There is another type of drilling, dry. It is used when you need to get a huge number of holes in a relatively short time (and with a large amount of construction work).
Inside the drills, which are intended for drilling, there will be olive oil. When starting work, hold the drill, but not at a right angle. Bring the tool to the working surface with the already rotating drill. This is required so that the surface of the tile is not damaged.
When the drill is warmed up, you need to change the angle by 90 degrees, and then you can continue working.
avoid heavy effort and it is better to run at 1,500 revolutions as this is required to cool the product. When heated during drilling, the olive oil will come out and aid in cooling.
Please note, after you start work, stopping is very undesirable, since the coolant and the drill will have time to overcool, and then they will need to be reheated, and this will reduce the service life of the tool ...
When working with specific tools, there are a few helpful tips to keep in mind.In this case, you will be able to achieve excellent results.
How to drill the ceramic granite tiles under the toilet? A diamond bit should be used to make the hole in an already installed tile on the floor. Typically, this is a 1 cm crown that should be used with water. With the help of such a crown, you will be able to make a hole, but you will need to work with such an additional tool as a jig.
If it is not there, then you can make it yourself and drill the appropriate holes in the board.
After that, you need to make a mark on the porcelain stoneware, and align it with the hole in the conductor, and then you can start drilling. After some time, you can remove the conductor and do the work without him. When the porcelain stoneware slab is drilled to the end, change the diamond core bit to an ordinary drill and drill a hole with it to install the toilet bowl.
In this case, it is recommended to make holes for the rosette, then start laying the tiles.
To do this, make a mark on the front side of the tile, and make a mark in the center of the future hole with a small diameter drill. Then take a diamond core bit with a large diameter, which is required to install the socket. After that, you can drill through the porcelain stoneware. Use water to prevent overheating of the instrument.
