How to fix carpet to the floor? Instruction + Video

How to fix carpet to the floor? Instruction + Video How the carpet is attached to the floor + Video. There is nothing difficult in the process of attaching carpet to the floor. Let's take a closer look at how to do it yourself.

You can easily cope with such work, you just need to comply with some rules.

Conditions for the correct laying of carpet

There are only 3 main conditions:

  • How to fix carpet to the floor? Instruction + Video The work should be carried out in a room where the air humidity is not more than 68%, and the temperature regime is from +17 degrees and above.

  • The floor surface must be flat, clean and dry. Also, if before that repair work was carried out in the room, they must be completed by the time the carpet is laid.
  • If the roll of material was brought inside the room from the cold, then it should be left in the room for at least 24 hours to stand at room temperature.

Please note, that if a new flooring is installed instead of the old one, it will not be superfluous to know how to carefully and quickly remove the old flooring.

Removal with special tools

This refers to the solvent of the carpet adhesive.

You will find such a solution in hardware stores, and it should be used according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Removal with water

But why spend money on special solvents, if you can remove the old carpet from the floor with the help of improvised means, in a simpler way. But this will greatly simplify the process and speed it up several times.

  1. The entire floor area, which is covered with carpet, should be moistened with warm water in the evening, and for this use a watering can for watering flowers.
  2. The surface of the carpet should be tightly covered with polyethylene.

  3. Leave the cover as it is until morning and remove the film the next day.
  4. Now all that remains is to cut the covering into strips of such a width so that they can be freely taken out. You need to grasp the edge of the carpet with pliers and begin to gently detach it from the floor surface.

Be careful and wet the floor so that you don't have to pay to repair your downstairs neighbors. Also, do not cut the carpet into too narrow strips (less than 0.

3 meters), as it can tear when torn off and grab the edge of the covering after that it will be much more difficult.

Removing the cover on gripper rails

The carpet, which has been laid and fixed with grippers, is not so difficult to remove - hook on one extreme, pull it off and then remove from the rail. For convenience, as in the previous method, you can cut everything into strips. If a new layer is laid instead of the old coating, then the slats can be left. So, when laying the cover again, dismantle the slats with a nail puller or a construction hair dryer, if they were planted on mastic.

After the glued carpet has been removed, the remaining glue on the floor can be removed with a grinder or scraper. Check the floor carefully to make sure that there are no staples, nails or baseboards left on it.

Now let's move on to how to attach the carpet to the floor. To lay a new layer, you will need tools, and although the set is small, it is better if it is immediately at hand so that you can do all the work quickly and efficiently. Below we have left for you a list of tools that are suitable for all types of flooring, and while some may not be required, it is better if you have them.

Carpet laying

Tools and devices

You will need:

  • Metal ruler - for even cutting.
  • A knife for covering (carpet) - is required to cut the covering into strips, as well as cut off excess material.
  • Brush or roller - required to apply the adhesive to the floor surface. For glue with a thick consistency, it is better to use a notched trowel.
  • Spatula or scraper - required to remove excess glue or remnants of old composition.

  • The Stretcher is a special tool that helps to pull the edges of the material onto the gripper bars.

Although this is a basic list, other tools may be required during the work.

Materials for creating flooring

Of the materials you need:

  • Carpet.
  • Underlay.
  • Gripper rail, which will be installed around the entire perimeter of the room and the carpet will be stretched over it.

  • Carpet adhesive.

When everything is purchased and ready, you can start laying.

Laying methods

You can attach the carpet to the floor using four methods - on tape, glue, by fixing skirting boards around the entire perimeter and using the technology called stretching.

On scotch tape

This method of flooring is ideal for small rooms where you can lay the flooring in one piece:

  1. Prepare the floor surface - remove dust, debris, old adhesive residues, dirt and more. The floor must be completely ready for double-sided tape to stick well on it.

  2. Adjust the material to the size of the room, cut off the excess. Roll the blank into a roll and remove the material.
  3. After that we glue the adhesive tape, and this should be done in the form of a grid, where the length of the side of the square will be equal to 0.5 meters. Such strips should also be glued around the perimeter of the room.

  4. Gently roll out the roll and glue it onto the livestock.

Important! Make sure that the surface to be glued is completely dry and the air humidity does not exceed 68%, otherwise the tape may deform or peel off even before the material is laid on it.

In this way, you can fasten the carpet to the floor almost every person and alone, although of course it will be more convenient if someone helps you.

Free deck

Probably the easiest way:

  1. Roll out the material around the room and leave about 10 cm along each edge for the entrances.
  2. Use a tamping roller from center to edge to expel all air and remove any bumps and waves.

  3. Cut off any unnecessary items.
  4. Install sills, skirting boards and more.

This method is ideal because the work can be done with your own hands and even save on payment for a specialist. Also, super-careful preparation of the floor surface is not required, as, for example, with the adhesive fastening method.

But there are also disadvantages, namely, that over time bubbles and even irregularities may appear only due to the fact that the covering was poorly fixed (the skirting boards do not press the carpet very tightly to the floor).

In addition, it is not recommended to move furniture over the coating and wash it with a washing vacuum cleaner.

On the adhesive

Despite the fact that the method is considered laborious, it is also the most popular.

There are a lot of reasons for this:

  • Reliability of fixing the carpet.
  • Minimal risks of bubble and wave formation.
  • Can be cleaned with a washing vacuum cleaner.

  • Suitable for rooms with a large area.

Please note, that when laying carpet on glue, you need to approach with full responsibility and follow the recommendations, since if something goes wrong the first time, the used the material cannot be laid a second time.

To fix the carpet to the floor with adhesive, you will need the following step-by-step instructions:

  1. Prepare the floor thoroughly.
  2. Roll out the roll around the room, while leaving 5-10 cm on the walls with an overlap around the entire perimeter.
  3. Let the coating lie down for about a day, and then cut off any excess.

  4. Now fold one half into the second to the center of the room, and coat the vacated area of the floor surface with glue.
  5. Glue the cover, and at the same time press and smooth it well in different directions from the center, use a roller for this.
  6. Fix the other half in the same way. When the covering is laid, trim it again, cut off excess, install skirting boards and sills.

Please note that the floor surface can be covered with glue both completely and partially (with a grid with squares of 0.

5 * 0.5 meters).

Interestingly, the adhesive installation method is ideal for laying carpet on wood or concrete floors. It will be easier to lay such a coating on a laminate or linoleum on tape or fix it with baseboards.

Stretching (tension on special slats)

This is a special method in which the edges of the material are attached to special gripper strips.

What are the advantages of the method? The floor does not require a thorough processing, as in the method with glue fastening. We also note the reliability of fixation, the absence of bubbles, waves and irregularities. In addition, the life of the coating will be extended. There are also disadvantages, namely that this method is very complicated and time consuming (special tools are required) and you will need to buy a substrate.

Important! It is advisable to lay a substrate under the covering that will be applied using the stretch method, as it will increase softness and will be able to increase sound and thermal insulation.

Instructions for covering the floor with carpet with stretching technology:

  1. Special grip strips made of wood should be nailed to the floor along the perimeter along the walls, into which small carnations will be driven in two rows with an angle of 45 degrees. You can install the slats only on dowel-nails, if the floor is made of concrete, or on self-tapping screws, if the floor is made of wood.
  2. Roll out the backing, and leave a slight overlap on the walls. Remove excess after complete styling.
  3. We do the same with the carpet.

  4. After that, pull the edges of the carpet onto the slats using special tools.

It's not that difficult, but help from the outside will not be superfluous.

Some useful tips

If you decide to lay carpet on the floor with your own hands, follow these tips:

  • Measure the floor area as accurately as possible and buy material with a small margin.
  • Carpet flooring always starts at the corner of the room.
  • In order to cut off excess pieces of material, use a flat block or a building level.

  • It is better to start removing excess material from the center.
  • If holes have been made in the covering (for pipes, for example), then the edges should be carefully secured with transparent tape.

These simple rules will keep you from re-stacking material.

What is the best way to lay the carpet?

The answer is simple - glue. The fact is that you can not worry and calmly move furniture across the floor, and not be afraid that irregularities or waves will appear.

Also, in this case, the service life of the coating increases, the original appearance of the carpet remains longer, and you will be sure of the reliability of fixation.
