How to properly glue a self-adhesive film on different surfaces
It so happens that the interior of a room or even furniture begin to get bored, but there is no way to completely change the situation.
In order to refresh the design without unnecessary financial and time spending, you just need to figure out how to glue the self-adhesive film, and also buy the material itself.
It is such a film that can reliably adhere to a smooth base, and at the same time it is easy to use, has a wide color gamut and is characterized by low cost.
Self-adhesive has high performance characteristics. This is due to its composition, structure, which include polymer components - it is they that protect the base from damage.
The film is capable of simulating various types of surfaces, and for this reason, with it, you can easily select the right solution for the chosen interior with it. Inside the film has a protective layer that will peel off before the base is glued.
This material has many advantages:
Please note that to update the interior with self-adhesive tape, you do not have to call the masters, because you can handle the work yourself.
And yet, all actions should be performed correctly, in a strict sequence, because the film is a rather capricious material, and if used carelessly, it can lie unevenly.
Self-adhesive tape is often used in the kitchen, because furniture deteriorates faster here all due to the high temperature and humidity level, fumes, especially if the ventilation does not work well. If you stick the film on the kitchen cabinets, you can protect them from grease drops and damage, since the spoiled material can be easily removed. Most often, in the kitchen, self-adhesive with imitation of wood, stone is used, or even they give a headset in the kitchen a beautiful and bright look through color film. Dining tables and kitchen countertops are also often damaged by knives and can be extended with self-adhesive tape.
The solution to the problem will be quick and inexpensive.
Let's consider the rest of the scope of the film:
Moreover, the material does not allow mold to grow, and this is extremely important for wet rooms. In the bathroom, finishing with a special mirror film or even a holographic canvas is welcomed - the interior will be original and beautiful.
An excellent option would be to buy film and protect walls or areas, as well as doors and furniture. The painted material is easy to remove and change to a new one, and such a cosmetic repair will cost a penny.
Moreover, you can protect the window from the sun's rays during the hot season if you tint it with a film.
The film material can be used to refresh the interior of every room, for example, by gluing it to stools, solid elements of armchairs and a sofa. Bright and beautiful film will be an ideal material for creativity, which is often used for making children's crafts. The film is also useful for obtaining original stained glass windows, decorating loggias and balconies, updating various interior items, as well as for cutting interior stickers with your own hands.
Self-adhesive film is a versatile yet unusual material that can even be classified by type of base, texture, surface and decor.
Self-adhesive is made on the basis of vinyl, paper, impregnated fabric, as well as pigments, plasticizers and stabilizers. The material can be divided according to the main substance that is in the composition - polyester, propylene, polyvinyl chloride.
Moreover, all materials have a combined composition, since the main component will occupy the largest share in it. The entire film can be attributed to decorative materials, and there are also special types of material - heating (it will reflect heat from the plane, used to finish the surface of walls with heating structures), as well as membrane (used for waterproofing in the construction industry).
The structure of the canvases that are glued can be one-layer, and can be two-layer.
The first option is the cheapest, and for the manufacture of such a film, PVC resin, plasticizers are used, and stabilizers are used to obtain strength. All the substances that are indicated are mixed until homogeneous with melting, and then they are extruded and a film is obtained.
The addition of plasticizers can make the single layer material stiff or even elastic. Self-adhesive double-layer type has two canvases - the base and the cover. The base is made of a paper or fabric base, and the cover is made of a certain type of PVC.
To obtain a two-layer film, a calendering or pump forming or caching / extrusion technique is used. Such a material is plastic, it is easier to work with it than with a single layer. And yet, the technical characteristics of such a film are higher, it is thicker and stronger.
Depending on the type of surface, different effects can be obtained after gluing the material. The main types of films are:
- Glossy - they are very often used where there is no natural light, for example, in the bathroom or in parts of the house facing the north side of the house.
- Matt. Suitable for light and spacious rooms, giving them a stylish and noble look.
- Transparent. They are required to protect surfaces from mechanical damage, keep furniture items from scratches and cuts. They are also suitable for updating and protecting glass products.
- Holographic. They create an unusual play of light, beautiful play. Due to the fact that the shade changes depending on the angle of illumination, the surface covered with such a film is perceived as three-dimensional.
- Mirrored. Popular for small rooms, they make it possible to visually enlarge them.
Most often used for kitchens and bathrooms.
As for the appearance of the film, it is able to simulate various structures and materials, for example:
You can also glue self-adhesive film in bright colors - red, yellow, blue and other tones of the gamut.
For a children's room, materials are often selected with the image of heroes of fairy tales, cartoons, and other interesting topics. There is a film on sale on which the drawing is done independently, and then it can be easily erased with a rag.
Self-adhesive film can be used on a large number of surfaces that are used for interior decoration. If we are talking about drywall, and it should be putty and primed in advance. Wood products must also be exposed and a layer of a special varnish composition must be applied.
Two coats of acrylic primer are required on the metal.
Please note that you cannot glue the film on substrates with irregularities, protrusions, defects - they will all start to stand out, and the quality of adhesion will also suffer. Before starting work, it is required to level the material and sand it. It is also undesirable to glue the film on old wallpaper, especially in the kitchen, where grease settles on the walls. Self-adhesive tape will peel off quickly from such coatings.
It is not difficult to use self-adhesive film, and first you should think over the design of the room and buy material. To glue the film without bubbles, the surface must be well prepared. After leveling and removing the remnants of the old coating, the base should be cleaned from grease, dirt, dust and other contaminants. Immediately before starting work, it must be primed.
Bonding may require a needle, ruler, clean rag, pencil, spatula, sharp scissors, or knife.
It is better if the master will carry out the work to finish large surfaces, because he has a construction hairdryer, which heats the joints and passes along the corners of the surface - this helps to make the coating perfectly even. If there is no building one, you can use a regular household hair dryer.
The width of the film is usually from 0.5 to 1 meter, and therefore, when buying, take the piece that is optimal in size. The material should be expanded, cut out a piece or decorative details cut out of it.
Geometric correct parts are always easy to cut, because there are markings on the back of the film, and when cutting, it is better to leave a small margin of 1-2 cm in case of measurement errors.
If the gluing area is small, for example, the front of a cabinet, it should be glued on a dry surface. Moisten larger pieces of furniture with soapy water. In this case, there will be a chance to correct the position of the canvas if it lies unevenly. Doors, if possible, need to be removed, as well as accessories.
Start from the top, and separate 10 cm of the film from the base, attach the sticky part to the top of the product. Fix the area, smooth from the center to the edges with a rag to remove air bubbles.
The bottom of the film with the liner peeled off can be left hanging. Then slowly and in parts separate the rest of the film from the backing and go down the surface of the product. In the end, if there are bubbles left, pierce them with a thin needle, squeeze out the air and iron the problem areas.
If "wrinkles" appear, blow them out with a hairdryer, and then carefully smooth them out. It is also worth treating the corners and joints with a hairdryer, and at the end of the work it will be possible to return the accessories to the attachment, as well as hang the doors in place.
It is not difficult to glue the self-adhesive foil on the door. The process is the same as described above. After preparing the walls or doors, degreasing and priming, glue the film, separating the inner coating in parts, and all bubbles should be expelled immediately so that you do not have to pierce them with a needle.
To make the coating evenly light, the surface should be slightly sprinkled with water in advance.
Before starting work, the glass should be degreased, then moistened with soapy water from a spray bottle, and a piece of material should be cut out of the film, the protection layer should be completely removed, and the film should be applied to glass, smoothing with a cloth or spatula from center to edge. Cut off excess material at the end of the work.
If the product is unusual, has a lot of bends, you need to cut the film into small pieces and join them correctly. For the extreme details, it is important to leave an allowance of up to 2 cm, and each piece is glued after the previous one, and then you get an even and beautiful coating.
