Nowadays, homemade furniture is very popular. This is because the finished products are quite expensive, and there is a huge variety of raw materials on the market that are freely available.
Having a minimum amount of appropriate materials it is quite possible to assemble good furniture with your own hands.
One of the most common methods of joining wooden parts is considered to be gluing. Thanks to gluing, the parts are strong and solid.
Gluing can be an independent fastener or together with fastening on screws or dowels. How do you glue the beams so that they don't come apart? We will try to answer this question in this article.
Tools that can be useful when gluing: hacksaw, plane, circular, milling machine, brushes, tape measure.
Materials: lumber, adhesive, acetone for surface degreasing, as well as water for diluting the glue-concentrate.
Lumber must be dry and clean. The workpieces are cut to the required size.
First of all, the surfaces that will be glued together are planed and processed on a jointer. It is imperative to determine in advance how the lamellas and annual rings will be located, which should be directed in different directions for two blanks.
The surfaces to be glued are processed and cleaned with sandpaper or a special tool. Then they are cleaned of dust, degreased, left to dry. After completing these procedures, proceed directly to gluing the parts.
When gluing the timber it is extremely important to choose the right adhesive composition. The choice is influenced by many factors:
Nowadays there is no shortage in the choice of glue. On store shelves, you will find a composition that is designed specifically for your conditions.
If the lumber is glued correctly, then such a product in its parameters can surpass solid wood.
Thanks to modern wood adhesives, a very strong joint is obtained. So, for example, when trying to tear off the glued bars to the surface of the countertop, the bar split along the length, and nothing came off at the place of the glued joint.
Another advantage of glued bars is that it is quite possible to do it at home, without having expensive professional tools, provided that you use already processed purchased slats and boards.
Conditions that must be observed to obtain a good result
During the drying process, the product must not be exposed to direct sunlight or moisture.
The parts to be joined must be firmly pressed against each other.
It is important to adhere to the drying times specified by the manufacturer.
After drying, the product must be carefully cut and treated with a fire retardant solution in two layers.
Note: Using this technology, you can glue not only bars, but you can also glue a tabletop for a computer desk from a floorboard.
If you have to make small blanks, for example, for the repair of some furniture, hanging shelf, drawer, kitchen countertop , when it is not possible to make grooves or quarters, then you can glue it onto a smooth truck. And here you may need a set with center markers.
This is a relatively inexpensive thing, but a very good assistant.
If your task is to assemble several dozen boards so that the panel looks like a single whole, then you should not use wide blanks for this. Because wide pieces can deform when the humidity of the environment changes and this will be very noticeable.
Note : The finished glued solid will not deform if done correctly. But maybe.
This will be avoided by changing the direction of the annual rings on the bars across the entire width. If, of course, you take a straight board without a flaw, then the process will be much easier.
Bonding must be done so that the joints along the length are almost invisible.
When preparing the workpieces, carefully align the workpieces to an angle of ninety degrees. The edges should be smooth and crisp.
In order to level the workpieces, you can use a plane or circular.
Important: If the workpiece was not prepared properly, you will end up with a large curved bowl.
The workpieces are laid out the way they are supposed to be laid in the array. Try to choose the patterns of the tree structure so that they fit and look the most advantageous.
For example, a curved structure should lie next to another curved workpiece, and a straight one to a straight one.
First, dry the panel. After we have made sure that everything is fine, we apply glue. It should have good viscosity.
Adhesive is applied to both parts of the bonded surfaces. This is necessary so that all the air is displaced during gluing and all the pores are filled.
Note: If the glue turns dull during gluing, it means that it has absorbed into the wood. And in this case, after this layer has dried, it must be scraped off, and then reapplied.
Then we align and tighten the blanks into the array.
At the same time, we knock out irregularities using a wooden hammer. Once the panel is assembled, we tighten it with clamps before droplets of glue begin to appear at the seams. It is important to equalize the pressure along the line of the clamps.Uniform pressure can be determined by the number of droplets along the connection lines. If it is not uniform, then add or remove clamps.
Then we leave the panel until the glue is completely dry, after which the excess glue is removed and you can start processing.
When gluing wooden blanks using PVA glue, the main thing is to tighten the array well using clamps.
For example, we want to make our own tabletop. The workpieces are greased abundantly with glue, the sides with the glue applied are turned over to each other and we begin to tighten with clamps.
PVA is a liquid glue and does not set immediately, and it is also possible that the bars will part when tightening.
And you can forget about perfect gluing. However, this can be remedied with regular salt. Salt crystals, absorbed into the workpieces, will not allow the bars to move apart.
Thanks to such a little trick, you can get high-quality glued bars that do not need to be passed through a thickness gauge afterwards.
Adhering to our recommendations, you can easily and quickly make a one-piece kitchen countertop or wall shelf from glued bars at home.
Good luck with your creativity.
