What is a closer?
The prototype of such a closer was a spring, one end attached to the door, and the other on its box or next to it, on a post.
It was almost impossible to adjust such a device, so the door usually opened tightly and slammed shut with a bang.
Modern devices are silent, the door closes with their help without jerks, very smoothly . They are distinguished by the mode of action, by the place of installation and by the type of mechanism. Hidden mechanisms are usually built into the door leaf, overhead are mounted on the top of the door frame or directly on the door.
There are also lower installation mechanisms, which are more often used for glass doors.

The internal operating mechanism of the closer is a spring that compresses when the door is opened , a cam mechanism or a pinion with a rack. Closers that are purchased complete with a digital lock use more often the second type of mechanism, which is characterized by an increased force at the very end of closing: this is necessary to securely snap the lock. Cam mechanisms are usually used in rack and pinion closers, they provide a smoother closing.
The door closer is selected by the weight and width of the door, guided by a special table of the standard.For example, if the door weighs twenty kilograms and has a width of 75 cm, a mechanism of the EN-1 class is sufficient, with indicators of 40 kg and 85 cm - EN-2, then it is the same.

To match a device for a heavy door, two door closer can be installed. Thus, the load is distributed evenly.
The surface-mounted closer can be installed outdoors or indoors . In the case of interior doors, the standard installation method is preferred.
From the opening side, the door closer body is mounted on the door, and a bar with a shoe is mounted on the door frame.
If we are talking about a door connecting to the street, it is better to install the closer from the inside to protect it from dust, moisture and drops temperatures. In addition, if the mechanism freezes in winter, the door cannot be opened at all. Therefore, if possible, the internal installation is always preferable.

According to the established rules, external doors always open outward. This means that the closer body will have to be installed either on the door jamb or an additional bar (in a parallel scheme).

If the closer needs to be adjusted in the "latching" mode, which is used on a door with a combination lock or a latch,
then the closing force and its speed are regulated in two zones. This is the starting range, 180 degrees to 15, and the ending range, 15 degrees to 0. In the end zone, both of these values (force and speed) should be slightly higher. It is best to avoid very noticeable speed differences.
Important! If you overdo it when adjusting the screws, the body of the mechanism may depressurize, oil will leak out of it, and it will become unusable.
Some models have additional options such as opening braking. They are also regulated and adjusted to the required values.
Sometimes the situation develops in such a way that it is not possible to install the device according to the standard scheme. Then you have to resort to installing an additional corner or special strips. In each specific case, their design has to be developed on site, taking into account the initial data.
