The blind area is a structural element of the building, which we do not pay attention to, almost never. But in vain, because experts say that this element is important, and like other parts of the building, and besides, it needs to be insulated. Thermal insulation schemes for blind area with penoplex have distinctive features. The procedure itself is the key to a long service life of this part of the building.
Why do you need a blind area? This element of the building structure is installed after the walls are finally erected.
This is a kind of slight protrusion around the perimeter of the house, which is placed with a slight angle of inclination.
This must be done so that the water does not accumulate, but leaves freely. Often, in the blind area or nearby, a gutter is installed for the outflow of rain and melt water, which flows into the soil or a special reservoir. The main function of the blind area is to protect the base of the house and the soil around it from the destructive effects of the external environment. Sometimes, a penoplex blind area is mounted at a depth of about half a meter.
This does not mean the design of the element itself, but layers of different materials, and each has its own purpose.
The main functions of the blind area:
This does not mean the structure of the element itself, but layers of different materials, and each has its own purpose - waterproofing;
The main task of the blind area is the timely drainage of water, in order to avoid penetration to the foundation of the house, which in turn threatens to underfloor the basement, and then wet the walls, from which the building material can be deformed and collapse. In winter, in some regions, the freezing point of the soil can reach 1.8 meters. This has an extremely negative impact on the foundation of the building, and threatens the collapse of the entire structure.
It is precisely in order to avoid such phenomena that they establish a blind area around the house with penoplex with their own hands. Its task is to reduce the level of soil freezing. Finishing with insulation materials will help to simplify the work. In addition, the insulation has a waterproofing effect, maintaining the dryness of the earth, and transfers the point of soil freezing to a higher level.
As for the appearance of the building and the impact on the exterior of the blind area, it really helps to emphasize the uniqueness of the structure.
Having designed the blind area in some intricate technique, you can emphasize the external attractiveness of the building. Also, it is worth noting that it is more convenient to move around the local area along a laid path than on the ground, which also gets wet during the rains, turning into a dirty mess.
Note. The level of inclination of the blind area may vary depending on the amount of precipitation in the region of residence, and is 5 - 10 º.
As for the insulation of the blind area around the house with penoplex, this method is justified for areas with severe weather conditions.
If you live in a territory with a temperate climate, then it is quite possible to do without insulation. We will talk about the circumstances under which insulation is a mandatory attribute. If your house is planned to be built on heaving unstable soils, on a shallow foundation, in conditions of high humidity, think about choosing an insulation material for the blind area.
Heamy soils can create some problems, since the soil is characterized by increased mobility in case of freezing. From a physical point of view, this can be explained by the fact that at sub-zero temperatures, water, turning into ice, reduces the density of the soil and pushes a part up.
Thus, there is an immediate risk that in some places the pressure on the base of the house increases, while in others, on the contrary, it decreases, which leads to subsidence. Often, heaving soils are mainly composed of clay, which prevents moisture from penetrating deeper, creating such problems.
In this regard, experts advise creating a blind area of sufficient width and insulating it, in order to avoid this very freezing.
Shallow type of foundation for laying on heaving soils can be used in a number of cases. If you plan to build a bathhouse on the basis of a frame, then it goes without saying that it will not have a lot of weight, so such a foundation will be quite enough for it.
Often the depth of the foundation is less than the freezing point of the soil. The scheme of warming the foundation and the blind area with penoplex in this case is a mandatory procedure, since over time the building can shrink heavily, and this, in turn, threatens the appearance of cracks on the facade, which cannot be repaired. Constant cycles of freezing and thawing of the soil will lead to the formation of pores in the foundation, into which water will seep. As a result, the soil under the base of the house will swell.
Experts still advise to carry out insulation work on the blind area, even in those cases when it seems unnecessary.
That is, it is better to play it safe than to correct the consequences later. Do-it-yourself insulation of the blind area and basement with penoplex helps to maintain heat in the house, reduce heating costs. About 20% of the heat goes into the ground through the floors and foundation, and the insulation will help compensate for this loss. The concrete base will stay dry and will last much longer. Also, it is possible to reduce the likelihood of deformation of the blind area during severe frosts, since the soil under it will not freeze.
Also, the movement of the blind area in the vertical direction is excluded. And one more important point of the benefits of foam insulation of the blind area - there is no need to insulate the basement.
Penoplex as a heater has gained extraordinary popularity, and all thanks to the excellent qualities of the material:
Penoplex insulation is an extruded polystyrene foam, which has acquired unique properties due to its internal structure. Inside, the sheets have air-filled bubbles.
This is what makes it possible to perfectly retain heat, since cold air currents cannot overcome such a barrier. Also, the bubble structure of the foam prevents moisture from penetrating through the material. It is very easy to install penoplex, you can handle it yourself. Insulation is produced in the form of sheets with dimensions 120 * 60 cm, the thickness may vary. To fit a certain size, it is enough to take a knife and cut off all unnecessary.
If we talk about the shortcomings of penoplex as a heater, then there are few of them:
Note. Treatment with fire retardants partially increases the level of fire safety of the material, but still, near an open fire, it begins to melt and ignite.
It is advisable to insulate the blind area simultaneously with the sheathing of the basement or basement with insulation. In this case, you can achieve the best result.
These works are easiest to carry out at the stage of building a house. Otherwise, you will have to dig a ditch around the perimeter of the entire building. If the house has a basement, make an indentation about 1 meter or more. The average depth of the ditch should be 70 centimeters.
The width should be such that it could be in it and work.
The foundation or basement floor must be cleaned of dirt and debris, if necessary, repair defects using cement mortar. In the presence of significant irregularities on the surface, work should be carried out on its plastering, this will ensure the tightness of the insulation. Then you need to wait about a month for the plaster to gain strength.
The next stage of work is the application of bitumen mastic to the walls. In order for the installation of Penoplex insulation to pass without difficulty, the mastic must be hot without impurities and solvents.
Waterproofing can be applied in several layers, and allow time for hardening. After you cover the walls with bitumen, you can proceed to the installation of the foam. In this case, you can do without the starting bar, relying on the base line. A sheet of insulation penoplex is fixed with glue or plastic dowels of umbrellas in the amount of 5 pieces per sheet of material. Adjacent sheets can be held together with a common seam.
Tip. To insulate the foundation of a house with penoplex, purchase a material called "Foundation", which is specially designed for such work.
Make holes in the walls through the insulation, making sure that they match. Then, polyurethane foam is poured into the hole and the dowel is inserted. After you completely cover the walls with insulation, it can be additionally waterproofed with a membrane.
Sometimes a mesh is attached to the penoplex and a layer of glue is applied, this is not necessary, since the penoplex does not collapse in the ground.
The width of the blind area is measured based on the data on the freezing point of the soil. The bottom of the dug ditch is covered with a layer of gravel. Its thickness should correspond to the required level of the blind area. If you have data on the occurrence of groundwater in the immediate vicinity of the soil surface, then you need to lay a layer of clay 25 cm thick.
This will prevent water seepage above the level. Geotextiles are laid on the crushed stone, sand of the middle fraction is poured on top of it with a layer of 15 cm. After this, the layers must be carefully tamped using a manual or mechanized unit.
Formwork is placed around the entire perimeter of the house to create a blind area. Penoplex is laid on a layer of sand in two layers.
The second layer is laid so as to overlap the seams of the first layer. This must be done in order to prevent shrinkage of the blind area at the joints. Then a thick overlap film is laid on the insulation. Roofing material or other waterproofing material can become an analogue of the film. The joints between the sheets should be carefully glued.
After the styling of the foam is completed, you can start creating the blind area. For this purpose, a blind area of paving slabs with Penoplex insulation is often used. Sand is poured onto the insulation with a layer of 15 cm, and leveled at the required slope, then the tiles are laid.
Often, concrete mortar is used to fill the blind area instead of tiles. For the correct distribution of the load, reinforcement is made.
For this purpose, a single mesh of metal reinforcement with cells of 10 cm is used. After that, the concrete solution is poured. A special rule is applied for alignment. It is very important to maintain the angle of inclination of the blind area.
After the concrete hardens, it is necessary to make expansion joints.
With a step of 2 meters, the upper layer of the blind area is cut, the depth of the slot should correspond to the depth of the Bulgarian disc. The gaps that you have turned out need to be filled with sealant.
