How to insulate the columnar foundation and why do it? Independent foam insulation: Technology + Video The columnar foundation, like the pile foundation, is most often used in the construction of a wooden house or a bath in areas with uneven territory or bad soil.

The service life of the building primarily depends on the foundation, therefore it is important to adhere to certain technologies during construction.

Insulation of the columnar foundation is an important factor.

Why insulate?

The columnar foundation has a number of advantages in comparison with others: it is easy to create, the price is many times less than a monolith, it is easy to repair and lasts up to 100 years ..

. It is necessary to insulate it for the same purpose as a monolith - to minimize heat loss.

  1. The creation of a reinforced concrete grillage greatly increases heat loss, because in cold months the concrete cools very quickly and literally begins to draw heat from the walls and floor of the house.
  2. How to insulate the columnar foundation and why do it? Independent foam insulation: Technology + Video If a metal or wooden grillage is selected between the floor and the ground, an air cushion is formed and there is constant air circulation in connection with which in winter the floor and the base of the walls of the first floor will be cold, even if you use the best thermal insulation material for interior decoration.
  3. All communications of the house pass just in the space under the house.

By insulating the foundation, you thereby protect communications from freezing and possible mechanical damage.

Having performed the insulation correctly, the heat loss in the house will be reduced by 20-25%.

Insulation process

How to insulate?

As an insulating material, you can use:

  1. How to insulate the columnar foundation and why do it? Independent foam insulation: Technology + Video Penoplex (expanded polystyrene plates) is the best material for insulation. It is very durable and its vapor permeability is close to zero. The characteristics of the foam are unchanged even in water, since it does not absorb moisture.

  2. Polyfoam - its strength is not as high as that of foam. It is easy for them to insulate the inside and outside of the foundation to protect it from moisture. Foam is often preferred because it is cheap and easy to install.
  3. Expanded clay is a fairly cheap bulk insulation. It is produced by firing clay.

  4. Mineral wool - easily absorbs moisture, it is better not to use it for external insulation. During installation, the cotton wool is covered with a vapor barrier film. If you choose mineral wool as thermal insulation, first create a frame, lay mineral wool and cover all OSB with a plate for protection.

! Important. Rodents can start in any insulation; during installation, take care to protect it from external damage.

Outside insulation

Advantages of outside foundation insulation:

  1. Concrete remains invariably strong.
  2. In cold months, the house retains heat, regardless of the foundation material and thermal insulation.
  3. Protects the foundation from moisture.
  4. Concrete is less susceptible to temperature changes.

! Important.

The disadvantages of using this type of insulation, including for a shallow columnar foundation, have not been identified.

Internal insulation

! Important. The use of this type of insulation has serious drawbacks, so in practice it is rare.

Advantages of foundation insulation from the inside:

  1. The basement is protected from condensation.
  2. Pleasant microclimate in the house.

Disadvantages of internal insulation:

  1. The outer side of the foundation is constantly exposed to external temperatures, both high and low.
  2. Constant climate change, temperature changes and soil swelling will quickly lead to mechanical damage to the foundation.

How to insulate the foundation with your own hands

If you decide to insulate the foundation without resorting to the help of masters, the first thing to start with is choice of material. As mentioned above, penoplex would be an ideal option. Penoplex is foam polystyrene plates, the thickness of which ranges from 2 cm to 10 cm.

To insulate the foundation or basement, a thickness of 10 cm is needed (you can use a double layer of a 5 cm plate). To protect against moisture, it is necessary to install a blind area around the perimeter of the house.

In order to protect the air cushion between the floor of the house and the ground from the cold during the frost period, you first need to create a wooden frame between the posts. The next step is to attach the foam panels to the frame with dowels and screws.

Seams between the boards must be properly treated with polyurethane foam.

Next, you need to protect the insulation from possible mechanical damage and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Siding or plinth panels are perfect for this.

When creating a blind area, you need to remember that its height above the ground should be 10-15 centimeters, regardless of the material from which it is made (it can be concrete or paving slabs). If the base is not provided between the posts, only the grillage needs to be insulated. If you use mineral wool to insulate the floor of the first floor, according to the technology, a layer of 10-20 centimeters must be laid between the floor beams and covered with a waterproofing film.

After that, a floorboard with a thickness of at least 40 mm can be laid on top.
