How to properly lay linoleum on fiberboard
It is widely believed that of all the materials for lining where it is easier and cheaper to lay linoleum on fiberboard. In terms of cost, it is difficult to argue, on average, fiberboard sheets are 2-3 times cheaper than the most popular OSB panels of the same size in home construction. Laying linoleum on fiberboard with your own hand may not be such a difficult task, but the process will definitely not be easier.
Opinions of modern experts on this issue strongly differ, fiberboard or another, more modern version - hardboard has been used as a substrate for decades.
The craftsmen began to lay linoleum on it the very next day after the start of sales.
But there are still experts who believe that laying material on hardboard is short-lived and ineffective, although practice clearly confirms the opposite. Is it another matter that linoleum flooring on fiberboard is important to scrupulously adhere to the technology. If you do not take the waterproofing of pressed fibers seriously, then you need to immediately lay the material on plywood, which is impregnated with bakelite and inhale phenol, and also formaldehyde until the end of days.
In the installation of hardboard on the floor under linoleum, there are such critical points:
- Sheets of pressed wood fiber or board has an excellent degree of thermal insulation and high shock-absorbing properties. At the same time, thin, only 0.
3-0. 5 cm sheet perfectly adapts to the linoleum canvas. If on plywood or OSB, linoleum can break at the joints, and then, when mounted on fiberboard, 2 materials will behave as a whole.
- Before installing fiberboard, it is necessary to solve the problem with waterproofing, especially if the materials will be in contact with moist cool air or a surface whose temperature is below +7 degrees.
But for this you have to pay with almost zero resistance to water and a low degree of hardness.
A relative of fiberboard - hardboard is made using a technology that provides smooth surfaces on both sides of the sheet. This will be achieved by special pressing of the rosin-paraffin mixture and fine fiber-wood powder. It is this material that is recommended to be laid under linoleum or laminate. A common building fiber board has a smooth surface on one side. For this reason, if you glue it for the substrate, and also try to glue the linoleum with glue to the fiberboard, you will need at least 2 layers of plates with a thickness of at least 0.
35 cm each
Material that is purchased in a building salon usually does not require an additional degree of preparation. Due to the fact that fiberboard is stored horizontally in a bundle, the sheet geometry does not require special revision or adjustment. The only problem may be the dimensions of the board, and the most popular format of the fiberboard board is the size 2.44 * 1. 22 meters.
An ordinary room of 15-18 square meters will just take 4 sheets, and in other cases, the floor material will need to be cut out in advance so that it is more convenient to bring it into the room and lay it on the floors.
If the fiberboard was purchased in advance and stored in an unheated room, then probably the sheet geometry was violated. It is imperative to correct the situation before installing fiberboard on the floor surface. Fiberboard should be stored in stacks in dry rooms. To align the sheets, you need 2 OSB sheets, a polyethylene film and a load:
In hot and dry weather, straightening takes a maximum of 72 hours. The removed sheets of fiberboard from the common pile must be immediately mounted on the floor under rolled linoleum.
A slightly increased degree of moisture only improves the adhesion of the boards to the base. If you plan to treat the material with a protective coating, it will take at least 2 weeks to dry in a stack until it is completely dry from the remaining water.
How to process before laying slabs under linoleum
How to lay linoleum on fiberboard? Most beginner materials prefer not to process the fiberboard before laying it on the floor. It is believed that it is enough to simply lay the sheets on a rough base and let them rest for 5 to 7 days, as in the case of rolling linoleum. This can help lay the fiber board, and it can also be the root cause of problems because the material can pick up moisture.
Everything will depend on the conditions in which you plan to lay linoleum.
Good advice! Ideally, immediately after purchasing the material, impregnate the fiberboard surface with a varnish for wood.
The base made of paper absorbs pentaphthalic and oil varnishes very well, and therefore the consumption of paint and varnish material is incredibly large. Sometimes specialists, in order to save on impregnation, apply PVA and water to fiberboard. The result is a very thin film that prevents very strong absorption of the varnish composition.
Is it necessary to process fiberboard with drying oil under linoleum
There is always a problem how to protect the paper base of the boards from water vapor and moisture. The most inexpensive and simplest method is to use drying oils and oil varnishes. For varnish protection, you can process fiberboard under linoleum, and long before the time comes for laying the plates. The drying oil protects no worse, but dries out for a long time. For this reason, it is required to dry the materials only if the sheets are glued to concrete.
Otherwise, the process of laying the material will turn into torture, the drying oil will stain everything. Moreover, not all adhesives make it possible to lay the material on a pro-polyphene surface. If the material is laid on the drying oil, then after 10-15 years, when the time comes for replacement, it will be possible to remove the coating only with the substrate.
Among other things, it is necessary to properly prepare the fiberboard floors. The material can be laid in 3 methods:
One of these methods is selected based on the base material. If linoleum is required to be laid in a country house without a basement and with an earthen floor, then fiberboard cannot be used. Even with insulation and double waterproofing, moisture will get to the wood fiber base, and the linoleum begins to rot.
As a minimum, concrete screed and ventilation are required.
How to mount fiberboard on the concrete surface
Fiber boards can be laid on a concrete screed only if the cement-sand base is insulated and its surface is waterproofed acrylic primer. Fiberboard sheets can be laid on a bituminous or resinous base, and the material is laid on a slightly cooled, but slightly viscous base and leveled using the rules. You can lay hardboard under linoleum on a concrete floor using dowels. This method is resorted to in the event that the dimensions of the rough base are very large, and the concrete site does not differ in the ideal surface.
Installation of fiber-particle backing on wood
Installation of hardboard on a wooden floor under linoleum is carried out either on an adhesive composition or on paint ... Attempts to fix fiberboard on staples or nails lead to the fact that the attachment caps are gradually squeezed out of the boards and pierce the linoleum. Before laying the hardboard, the floors must be carefully sanded, the paint removed, and the tops of the floorboards must be cut off with a grinding machine to 0.
3-0. 5 cm. Using the building level and profile, check for the presence of "bumps" and "humps". The joints between the floorboards need to be putty and scraped. At the end of the preparation, the wooden floors are primed, and then the fiberboard can be laid on an adhesive or oil paints.
Leveling the floor under linoleum
To lay linoleum on fiberboard, you must first level the surface. The laid hardboard is a sufficiently even coating so that linoleum can be laid even without the use of adhesive. An exception may be the joints between different sheets, but if the installation gap is observed, the edges, as a rule, are obtained at different levels. For this reason, the seam needs to be trowelled with a belt-driven sander and the seams need to be filled with acrylic sealants. If you have doubts that the seams can resist under load, then the hardboard must additionally be fixed with staples using a construction stapler.
How to lay linoleum on fiberboard
Before laying the linoleum covering, it must be rolled out on hardboard for at least 3-4 days.During this time, the material is rolled out and leveled several times, and then loaded with weight. With proper preparation, linoleum is required to level and acquire a hardboard surface profile.
Next, the canvases need to be laid out on fiberboard with a small overlap, cut and glued with adhesive tape. Apply marks along the common perimeter, along which it will turn out to correct the position of the laminate when gluing.
It is important to lay the material with an overlap on the wall surfaces so that there is a small margin if the canvas suddenly moves.
Next, you can lay linoleum using an adhesive or double-sided tape, you can even use two options at once. Initially, glue the tapes under the butt lines, and the linoleum is laid on top, then glue strips are applied and the coating is returned to its place. The materials to be laid are simultaneously pressed and rolled, and after the linoleum sheet is fully expanded and deployed on a hardboard substrate, it is only required to squeeze out waves and bubbles on the surface.
How to glue linoleum
It is believed that laying on an adhesive tape will last for a maximum of 2 years, and then the adhesive mass that covers the tape dries out or peels off the hardboard especially if it has not been treated with a primer.
It is better and more convenient to glue linoleum with glue on fiberboard. When laying on wood floors, an excellent acrylic adhesive for paper and wood will work. Acrylic is definitely not suitable for linoleum on a concrete floor. There are also special polyurethane adhesives that provide a strong and reliable seam for 10-15 years. The rest of the brands of the product will quickly lose their bearing capacity due to condensation on the concrete surface.
How to properly glue
It is better to lay the material on drying oil or varnish oil composition. The use of adhesive makes the floors unusually hard and tough. Chloride and dichloroethane are used as a solvent for polyurethane, they provide excellent adhesion to the base of PVC linoleum and dry it at the same time, and also make it hard and brittle. If the material is glued, then the agent is applied in narrow, even stripes, carefully pressing the mass of glue onto the fiberboard to remove air. After installing linoleum, it is required to roll the canvas with maximum effort so that there are no protruding "paths" on the surface.
Kuvshinko Igor, 60 years old, St. Petersburg : "All adhesives are chemistry, and if you put linoleum on fiberboard, it is better to lay it altogether without resin and glue. It will be safe, it will not have a headache, especially in the summer, when everything heats up and evaporates in the room. Covered a couple of layers of drying oil, and will last for 100 years. Excellent linoleum is best lay without gluing, its reverse side will stick to the base itself.
In the summer, they removed the German linoleum, it lay without glue on the hardboard - it was barely torn off. "
Simolin Mikhail, 45 years old, Kaluga: "It is recommended not to lay linoleum immediately after the fiberboard has been sewn. It is required to wait 6 months until everything settles down and it will be seen where the nail got out, and where it led, or bubbles formed. In a few months, the plate will not rub off strongly, but the sheet will become dense and will firmly lie on the floor. After that you can lay linoleum on the adhesive composition, and again, apply only on the seams and on the general perimeter, as the floor surface can be uneven.
Laying linoleum on fiberboard is a great idea. Despite the high degree of strength and susceptibility to moisture, hardboard elegantly compensates for the disadvantages of linoleum linen. If you do not neglect the impregnation and waterproofing of the floor, and the material will stand perfectly for at least 20 years.
