Balcony cladding allows not only to improve the appearance, but also to eliminate blowing and leakage during bad weather. If you place insulation under the corrugated board, then the issue of heat loss is partially solved.
It must be understood that often the cladding material is attached to the existing parapet, so it is important to inspect and repair the balcony railing, as well as the balcony slab itself.
IMPORTANT! When external sheathing with corrugated board, it is necessary to take primary safety measures when working at height, to carry out actions in a balanced and accurate manner. Do not lean on the parapet, no matter how reliable it looks, tie the tool with which you are working.
Remember, falling even from the first floor during work is not predictable.
If we consider materials for self-cladding of a balcony, they will do the following:
Today it is still covered with a layer of polymers (plastisol, polyester) to increase the decorative effect and preserve the appearance of the sheets for a longer time.
Sheathing the balcony with corrugated board is the best option for doing work with your own hands.
ATTENTION! If glazing is already installed on the balcony, contact professionals with special climbing equipment or a construction hoist.
The material is divided into three categories: professional sheet, corrugated board and metal tiles - all of them with corrugated surface (trapezoidal, wavy) - stiffeners, which gives them the necessary rigidity.
38 - 1.2 mm, the bending structure is in the form of a trapezoid with a height from 20 mm and length from 30 mm. Sheets have a price slightly higher than corrugated board. This type is more often used for the installation of fences, but it is also suitable for cladding balconies.
In view of sufficient strength and a more affordable price, this type is often used for cladding brick fences, or using lathing to increase rigidity, suitable for cladding a balcony.
Metal tiles are used for roofing and have smaller sheet sizes, which is not very convenient for cladding.
In fact, both the corrugated board and the corrugated sheet can be used for covering a balcony without a crate. However, its use will allow the use of insulation (for example, mineral wool), will simplify the fastening of the corrugated sheets themselves and will look more neat outwardly.
For the work we need: frame (new or existing), possibly pre-assembled parts of the lathing, corrugated board or profiled sheet, two internal (end) and two external metal corners, fasteners (wood screws for wooden lathing and metal screws with pads for the caps), screwdriver, electric drill with metal drills to choose from 3 ,five; 4 or 4.
5 (preferably in addition the same for wood), scissors for metal, level, possibly a grinder.
First, it is necessary to clean and remove old cladding materials, asbestos-cement or corrugated boards from the outside of the balcony. During construction, asbestos-cement slabs were attached to hooks from below and from above, which are cut off with a grinder.
ATTENTION! The fastening hooks of the old sheathing can break from the vibration of the grinder, so it is important to fix the plates of the old sheathing, for example, tie them to the parapet.
The lathing is mounted from profiles fixed in parallel balcony walls.
The steel frame must be treated from rust, the rotten places must be cleaned as much as possible, treated with atmospheric paint and scalded with metal profiled pipes 20 * 20 mm. Inspection and preparation must be carried out carefully, since the steel frame of the fence will have an additional load, especially with further glazing of the balcony, although in this case it is strongly recommended to completely replace the old fence. The planned attachment points of the battens to the supporting frame of the balcony are cleaned to white, preferably primed, and subjected to anti-corrosion treatment.
For the lathing itself, either wooden slatted beams or aluminum profiles are used, there is an option to completely replace the balcony parapet with a steel frame - the choice is always at the discretion of the owner of the balcony and from the proposed further work.
ATTENTION! When designing and calculating, it is imperative to take into account the bearing capacity of the balcony slab.
So, for example, a standard Khrushchev balcony slab was designed for a load of 200 kg / sq. m (excluding wear), that is, no more than 600 kg of total weight in a new state, today this value is about 400 kg.If the balcony slab is worn out, then it is more expedient and safer to assemble a steel frame with fastenings to the wall of the building to reduce the load on the slab.
It is easier and faster to make a crate of wood, what is needed for sheathing a balcony with your own hands, however, an antiseptic treatment is recommended to prevent rotting. For wooden lathing, beams of 40 * 20 or 40 * 30 mm are suitable.
It is necessary to drill 2 rows of holes parallel to the balcony slab, leaving a gap of about 1 m between them, maximum 1.2 m. is carefully fixed to the existing frame. Please note that the lowest rail is fixed so that when installing the finishing material, it can be reached with a screwdriver and securely fastened. However, you should know that the maximum distance between the lower rail and the loose edge of the corrugated board should not exceed half a meter
In the metal frame of the balcony, fastening holes for the lathing are drilled in two rows (using an electric drill, drill for 3.
5; 4 or 4 , 5), or self-tapping screws for metal are used (in this case, it is advisable to use an electric screwdriver). If you make holes, then it is easier and more convenient to make them from the inside of the balcony. There should be at least four points of attachment of the timber, as many as possible. The upper guide of the lathing should be located closer to the upper edge of the sheet, since an ebb will be attached to it, covering the insides of the profiled sheet and the lathing from precipitation.
LIFE HACK! If you drill holes first in the bar, and then, using it, in the frame of the balcony parapet, this will avoid the holes mismatch.
When calculating, preparing and cutting corrugated board, it should be remembered that the sheets are mounted with an overlap of 10-15 cm. It is advisable to cut with a grinder - so the edges will be smoother and more accurate, but you can also use ordinary metal scissors (if the sheet is up to 1 mm thick).
After installing the crate, the profiled sheet itself is mounted. For installation, it is more correct to use self-tapping screws with a press washer or to make gaskets for a head from vinyl or rubber yourself, this will provide protection against corrosion of the corrugated board in the places of fixation. It is important not to place the attachment points in the same "wave" of the profiled sheet, otherwise it will play when heated in the sun or in strong winds.
After fixing the entire profiled sheet, external corners, at the corners of the balcony, and internal, between the balcony and the wall of the house, are mounted, as well as the upper ebb. It is advisable to drive the outer corners with one side under the corrugated board. For this, the side profiled sheet during installation should not be fitted close to the wall, leaving a gap of about 5 cm from the wall of the house.
The use of aluminum profiles is similar to that of wooden beams.
Steel crate, more correct in this case, the frame is used more often as a necessity, due to the more expensive cost, in cases where the parapet is worn out or the railing rods have rotted from time to time.
In this case, the frame rests not only on the balcony slab, but is also fixed to the building wall, which reduces the load on the slab during glazing. In addition, it is possible to increase the useful volume from the inside by moving the glass unit beyond the perimeter of the balcony area.
To create the frame, profiled steel pipes 40 * 40 mm are used. Welding is already used here. Fastening to bolts is more durable and less reliable, since any bolts tend to loosen the tension.
It is better to entrust the assembly of the steel frame to professionals. And the topic itself will be better covered in a separate article.
A drill with a metal drill bit with a diameter of 3.5 mm is used here. how to sheathe a balcony with corrugated board.
It is necessary to drill 2 rows of holes parallel to the balcony slab, leaving a gap of about 1 m between them, maximum 1.2 m. The lathing is carefully fixed to the existing frame. Please note that the lowest rail is fixed so that when installing the finishing material, it can be reached with a screwdriver and securely fastened. However, it is worth knowing that the maximum distance between the bottom rail and the loose edge of the corrugated board should not exceed half a meter.
At the stage of fastening the corrugated board, assistants and a safety cable will be required. Consider also the dimensions of the profiled sheet: a standard sheet is 1.2 meters long, so it will completely overlap the balcony frame. The width of the material is calculated taking into account gaps in the range of 50-150 mm.
For installation, special self-tapping screws will be needed - they are also covered with a protective layer, the color of which is matched to the color of the corrugated board itself.
These screws are additionally equipped with a rubber washer, which serves as a waterproofing in the attachment points. screws for corrugated board and sheet installation is carried out from corner to corner, while it is important to maintain one direction of movement. The screws are screwed in two rows across the sheet area, but only the inner part of the bend is selected for fastening.
A gap must be left between the extreme structural elements and the building wall. Its width is 5 cm.
The inner corners will be mounted here.
An internal special corner is placed in the left gap between the wall of the house and the sheet. If the corner does not adhere firmly to the profiled sheet, then additional screws can be added to the joints.
Installation of external corners is carried out in a similar way, which are fixed on the outside of the balcony.
