How to make an epoxy putty with your own hands: Instructions + Video How to make an epoxy putty with your own hands. Various mixtures have long gone into oblivion, with the help of which repair work was carried out 30 years ago. Such mixtures are made by hand, so it is extremely important that all the proportions of the components are observed. This did not always happen, which is why the end result often suffered and was of dubious quality. At the moment, I will forgive a lot, and ready-made mixtures for repair, for example, putty, at the moment can be bought both ready-made and dry.

These solutions are of high quality, and in them the proportions of the ingredients are observed with great precision.

General information

The variety of mixtures for putties is so great, because each of the types is designed to determine the types of work, and is also associated with certain materials. For example, do-it-yourself epoxy putty was able to take its rightful place among other similar compounds that the construction industry offers. Also, it is worth noting that such a tool is intended not only to repair wooden products and materials, because there are many putties for ceramics, concrete, metal and other things. It turns out that, by their intended purpose, such mixtures are capable of covering a fairly wide area in construction.

Ingredients for Epoxy Putty

Epoxy Putty is a two-component material:

  • How to make an epoxy putty with your own hands: Instructions + Video The first element is the epoxy itself, to which fillers are added. Typically, these are fiberglass or metal shavings.
  • The second component is hardener.

Both materials can be sold separately, but only as a set, mixing should be done only before using the composition. In this case, it is worthwhile to perform the mixing process correctly and according to the instructions.

It is definitely not worth rushing in this matter, since the epoxy putty will polymerize within 8 hours. It is important here that the composition is mixed in such a way that both components can be evenly distributed throughout the entire volume in the solution.

How to apply it correctly

The process of applying the material to the surface that you decide to repair is quite simple. First of all, the surface should be cleaned of dirt and dust. If it contains oil stains, try to remove them.

But there is no need to perform priming, and even if the surface was previously painted, the old paint layer can also not be removed.

  1. The finished mixture on the surface to be processed should be applied with a brush, roller, or better with a spatula, you can also use a spray, but this is not permissible for every type of epoxy solution.
  2. The applied layer must dry well, and this should be allowed from 6 to 8 hours.
  3. If the application was with small defects or unevenness, then the surface should be sanded with sandpaper.
  4. If a compound intended for a rough finish was used, then when it dries, it should be covered with another layer, but this time finishing.

In this case, the fillers will have a fine structure. The use of two types of putties is a necessity when the plane to be repaired will have a large flaw and defects.

Now it's worth considering what the benefits are.

Advantages

Epoxy putty, which is easy to make with your own hands, has the following positive aspects:

  • It is an excellent paint base.
  • The material is odorless.

  • Has resistance to mechanical influences.
  • Neutrality to chemically active substances.
  • Does not shrink during polymerization.
  • Excellent processing properties.
  • Has a long service life.

  • Low cost of the mixture.

Further, it is worth considering separately epoxy mixtures.

Epoxy putties for various materials

Materials based on epoxy resin are marked "EP", as well as several number values. It is they who affect which solution you choose. For example, EP-0010 and EP-0020 epoxy putties contain certain fillers, and other brands do not have them.

When choosing a filler, one should take into account the fact that it will be different for both brands. By the way, if you are faced with a choice about which filler to choose for finishing a wooden floor, then it is better not to use the epoxy variety. For this, acrylic-based putty will be the best option. Epoxy ones are suitable for repairing wooden products - doors, furniture, windows, and more.

EP-0010

This brand is used to level metal and non-metallic surfaces.

If the solution is diluted and liquid, it can be used as a primer coat. As a rule, for sale it comes in a pasty form, and to bring it to a liquid state, you need to stir it with hardener No. 1 (which is a 50% solution of ethyl alcohol and hexamethylenediamine) or diethylenetriamine. The mixing percentage of the components is 8.5% of the hardener from the total amount of the paste.

The EP-0010 can be used both indoors and outdoors. Before you start to apply the paste to the surface to be treated, the latter can be primed or not. By the way, you can use diluted putty itself as a primer. The material will adhere perfectly to any surfaces, while it will be quite elastic, but during drying, a layer with high strength indicators will form on the processing surface - without bubbles and cracks, smooth, red-brown in color.

Recommendations for use are as follows:

  • How to make an epoxy putty with your own hands: Instructions + Video Apply EP putty -0010 is possible only at temperatures from +5 to +30 degrees.

  • It will dry out within a day, provided that the ambient temperature will be from +18 to +22 degrees. If the temperature mode changes and increases to +70, then the putty will dry out in 7 hours, and usually this mode is set in the drying chamber of the car painting workshop.

Please note, that if the metal surface treated with epoxy putty is dried in an intensive mode, then it should be kept at a temperature of +22 degrees for about a couple of hours. If, after carrying out the processing work, you also plan to paint the surface, then the workpiece should be kept at the same temperature for about 3-4 hours.

And one more extremely important point, which concerns the correct use of EP-0010 epoxy putty.

It should only be sanded wet, namely when adding water. The latter is the consumption of epoxy putty with your own hands. It is approximately from 130 to 700 grams / m 2 . Naturally, with a spatula, this value will be greater than if the solution is applied using a spray gun. In this case, it is imperative to take into account which surface will be repaired with its help, and we are talking about quality.

For example, a metal surface will require much less material, for a concrete surface you will need more, because a porous surface often has many defects in the form of grooves, cracks and chips, which must be filled with a putty solution during repair work.

EP-0020

Such a soiled epoxy putty differs from the EP-0010 described above, but only fine structure of the filler. Hence, it turns out that the consumption per treatment surface is less, from about 100 to 200 grams / m 2 . But such a putty like EP-0020 cannot be used as a thick layer that covers planes with large irregularities and defects, since it is used as a topcoat.

Please note, that both the first EP-0010 epoxy putty and the second EP-0020 are materials that are flammable.

For this reason, it is forbidden to work with them near sources of open fire.

When working with them, all safety precautions should be strictly adhered to, namely:

  • Work only with gloves made of rubber.
  • Wear a respirator.
  • If the putty suddenly gets on the skin, immediately de-rinse the area with clean water.
  • Indoors where the epoxy will be used must have excellent ventilation.

  • Be sure to hide it from children.

Perhaps, such rules will help protect your health, and even life.

Characteristics

With the help of such a building material, you can process coatings of the following type - foam concrete and concrete, ferrous and non-ferrous metal, stone and brick, plexiglass and ordinary glass, as well as plastics and ceramics. It is for this reason that the use of epoxy resin is ubiquitous - construction, mechanical engineering, aircraft and shipbuilding, the creation of hydroelectric installations and tanks, bridges, pipelines and various metal structures. This list is far from complete and only the major large complexes are listed.

Due to its special qualities, epoxy putty can perform the functions of an anti-corrosion, protective compound, since the applied layer is extremely strong and wear-resistant. As mentioned above, the putty can be used to carry out internal work, and external, since this material has excellent frost resistance. Moreover, the putty is matte and semi-matte. As for the characteristics of resistance, it should be noted not only resistance to mechanical loads and chemical influences, but also the ability to resist the appearance of mold and mildew (in fact, such a putty plays the role of an antiseptic). Such high characteristics make it possible to use the material in many areas - both in industry and in construction.

DIY making

It's not so difficult to make an epoxy putty with your own hands.

This will require the use of a hardener and epoxy resin, as well as various fillers that can be changed depending on the surface to be finished:

  1. If we are talking about putty on wood, then these are small sawdust that will be mixed with chalk or gypsum.
  2. Epoxy putty for metal requires the use of sawdust, and preferably they should be from the metal from which the base will be made. As a rule, it is aluminum powder that is used.
  3. Epoxy putty for plastic requires the use of a colored pigment so that the place that has been repaired does not stand out from the general background, and also crushed glass into dust.

  4. Concrete will require cement, sand, or fiberglass.

The technology of work is quite simple, the main thing is that all the necessary components are at hand and the proportions are observed. It is important that you do not overdo it with the hardener. If its total amount does not exceed 3% of the total volume of the resin at a temperature from -25 to +12. Moreover, if it is +25 on the street, then the amount of hardener may be reduced to 1.

5%, and if +12, then increase to 3%.If the operating temperature range, when it is planned to carry out the work, will fluctuate from +13 to +25 degrees, then the composition must necessarily contain only 2%.

Please note that the amount of filler must be added by eye. In this case, each master has his own, special recipe. It is important that the mixture is of the required consistency so that you can work with it comfortably.

Correctly made epoxy will retain its elasticity for about 1 hour, and then an irreversible polymerization process will begin, and it will no longer be possible to touch the surface. After complete solidification occurs, sanding can begin.

Also, making an epoxy-type putty with your own hands involves some dangers, and this is due to the fact that there is a hardener in the composition. If for some reason you add more than the prescribed amount, then a violent reaction will begin, in which a lot of heat will be released. At such a moment, getting a couple of burns is not difficult.
