Laminate for tiles - advantages and disadvantages

Laminate for tiles - advantages and disadvantages Laminate for tiles in the kitchen, corridor + photo

The design of the floor covering must be selected in color and the purpose of the room that you are going to decorate. So, in the living room, it will be appropriate to use a parquet pattern, that is, a laminate for tiles. It's not even about the visual design, the correctly chosen pattern on the lamellas will only enhance the overall perception of the interior of the room. For example, a laminate for a tiled floor in the hallway will add naturalness to the atmosphere, because tiles have long been used on the floor in the "dirtiest" rooms of a house or apartment.

General information

Features of the material with a pattern for a tile

Naturally, a tile pattern and texture cannot be reproduced on a classic coating made of laminate with a traditional pattern, which is assembled from long, board-like lamellas.

Almost all floors are tiled, with rare exceptions - square laminate. There are materials even in the form of wide rectangular textures, on which there is a texture of 2-3 tiles at once, but usually a square is still used. Thanks to the panel-type system, it is possible to achieve the maximum similarity between the laminate floor and natural tiles.

Tiled laminate flooring is so similar to ceramic that even by touch, you can easily confuse with a material of natural origin. It cannot be distinguished either by its shade or texture from a stone of natural origin.

The imitation of the tile covering has certain differences from the base of the mineral type, and therefore, when planning the laying process of the laminate

under the tiled covering in the kitchen or corridor, you need to remember about the features of the inlaid floor: > Pressed wood fibers, acrylic and polyurethane films are used in the base of the tile imitation. Thanks to polymer and wax impregnation, the laminate under the tile is more resistant to water, but during the laying process, you will need to treat the locks with special silicone mastics.

  • The new moisture resistant laminate has water repelling properties, but to maintain it, it is necessary from time to time to treat the floors with waterproofing mastics.
  • Despite the high similarity to real tiles, the outer laminate flooring is inferior to mineral glaze in terms of wear resistance and strength.
  • Please note that if you drop a hot or heavy object on the floor, the damage is likely to be minimal.

But if you spill acetone or solvent, then a stain will form, and the surface layer will begin to dissolve.

Almost all brands of laminate with a large width are made in a wear-resistant performance of classes 33 and 34, but still a polymer film, and therefore it is not required to expect a similar hardness and resistance to a detergent composition, as in the case of real tiles ...This means that when choosing a white laminate for a tile, you need to look for information at the same time on how and with what cleaning agent you can clean surfaces, white and other light shades are considered the most popular colors for the floor in the kitchen.

But if natural stone does not give rise to questions about the service life and methods of washing when laying (fortunately, there are a lot of cleaning agents for tiles), then to care for white laminated floors under kitchen conditions, you need to seriously study the instructions and recommendations from the manufacturer.

    Advantages and disadvantages of tiles

The new building material for installing floors in bathrooms and kitchens is a deep development and formation of the usual laminate model. Naturally, in order to achieve maximum similarity with real tiles, the manufacturer uses more expensive materials and technologies that help to at least slightly approximate the quality of the plastic laminate to a tile made of at least sandstone or terracotta.

Please note that any type of flooring material, even the most common laminate for tiles in the corridor, will deserve attention, if only for the reason that its structure, and most importantly, the quality will be much higher than usual laminated plastic that is able to imitate wood floors.

Advantages in working with imitation tiles and tiles

A floor covering made of real ceramics only looks convenient and beautiful in appearance, capable of serving in the kitchen, in the corridor or bathroom.

In reality, natural matte or glazed tiles in the kitchen will cause many problems for the owners, which are associated with repairs, clean seams and replacing damaged tiles. Laminate panels with imitation tiled texture do not have the disadvantages of ceramics:

In addition to all of the above, it can be added that most laminated type coatings have a high degree of safety. For example, one of the laminate grades - vinyl quartz has a filler, due to which you can even extinguish a cigarette and burning objects on the surface without damaging the floor.

Please note that quite often a pattern that imitates the texture of ceramic, marble, or even jasper tiles will turn out to be an order of magnitude more effective and prettier than natural material.

For this reason, opting for a polymer type coating will guarantee that the laminate floor is uniquely the way it was portrayed in advertising, without blind spots, cracks and defective gloss, as is often the case with tiles.

The advantages of the material are required to include excellent thermal and sound insulation, excellent sound absorption and ease of walking, which tiles and mineral tiles do not have. Legs will not get tired and stiff even after prolonged stay on the kitchen laminate.

Negative moments when choosing a laminate

In certain positions, the laminate is much inferior to the real tiled or wooden floor. The main disadvantages are:

    • The pattern on the tile, even when closed with a layer of melamine resin, is made with organic paints. During the first 5 years of use, organics fade a little and darken if sunlight falls on the laminate in the kitchen.

    • Some of the laminate models with the typical pattern of sandstone, paving stones or quartz require additional reference to the interior design and the direction of the main light flux. This is, in fact, a mosaic, almost a picture of stone, and therefore, when choosing a tile, you need to take into account the shade of the walls and pieces of furniture.
    • Laminate flooring with ceramic tile imitation requires respect and moderate stress. If you constantly rearrange pieces of furniture, a table and chairs, then "paths", risks of scratches and stains are formed on the tiled surface.

Naturally, the texture and color of the tiles perfectly mask the damage, but it is not possible to completely hide the traces.

Moreover, unlike tiles, you will need to constantly clean, rub and polish the seams between laminate panels. Firstly, sand and dust constantly accumulate in them, like emery, tearing off the protective film, and it is also required to exclude the possibility of water flowing under the coating at any cost. Despite all the assurances of the manufacturers, even the best waterproof laminate for tiles of class 34 is only pressed cellulose fibers, which are covered with a thin film. It is necessary to fully embed the coating with imitation of tiles in water once, in order to note how vulnerable the pressed-type sawdust is.

How to choose a tile look laminate

Laminate for tiles - advantages and disadvantages Tile laminate flooring can be square, water resistant, etc.

The main criteria for choosing a coating are approximately the same as working rules for simple mineral tiles. When choosing a laminate, the first consideration should be the environmental purity of the material. Even if you purchase branded flooring materials, you still need confirmation for the content of phenol, aromatic hydrocarbons and formaldehyde.

For large kitchens, it is better to choose a wide laminate, as well as panels with a cross section of at least 0.5 meters, for hallways and corridors it is more convenient to use square lamellas.

The texture of the material is chosen for furnishing the room, for example, for plastic glossy pieces of furniture with bright colors, the texture of a dark color of polished marble or single-color tiles is perfect.

For high-tech or modern furnishings, imitation of porcelain stoneware tiles will be most appropriate. If the kitchen interior has a lot of "wood" shades and colors, then laminate with imitation of warm sandstone will be preferable.

Good advice! If you do not know what texture and color to choose for a tile or tile, you can stop at a universal light gray or white coating.

After purchase, it is worth checking how tight the joints on the laminate panels will be.

You can pour some water on the surface of the laminate before finishing the installation process. If moisture begins to appear from the back, this means that the seams need to be additionally wiped with wax mastic or the material must be returned.

Types of laminate flooring with a tiled pattern

Usually sellers offer two, much less often three options for laminate flooring with tiles. The first is the simplest, or class 31 home laminate. The resistance of such material to abrasion is very high, but in all other parameters the lamellas do not differ from excellent linoleum.

The second group is class 32 and 33 coatings, this is the maximum that can be bought for home use. This tile laminate has several film layers, the upper one is polyurethane, which can withstand abrasion even better than glazed ceramics or tiles, and therefore the coating lasts at least 15 years. And the 34th class of laminate is used only for extremely high abrasion loads, for example, for floor and corridor expanders in a constant large flow of people. Usually it is produced with imitation of porcelain stoneware tiles.

    Rules for laying laminate

Installation of the coating is no different from the installation of simple lamellas.

There is only one caveat left - a competent choice of panel tile pattern. The first row is installed along the walls with the obligatory use of wedge spacers. Other rows need to be trimmed in such a way that the patterns match, and a seam overlap was made at the same time.

The distance between joints in parallel rows must be at least 15 cm. Cutting the material is required only from the back, and always with a tool with high speed.

It is required to forget about the electric jigsaw and the grinder; it is best to cut the lamellas on a tabletop disk machine. This is the only way you can get a perfectly straight cut line on the laminate. If you try to cut the protective film with quartz tile filler with a jigsaw or a hand saw, then a couple of months after installation, the tile pattern may swell due to water leaks. Moreover, adhesives must not be used. The tightness of the laminate seam - they will not add a tile, and there may be enough problems with the shrinkage process of the coating.

Laminate under the tiles in the kitchen - a good idea. A room in an apartment or house does not require such strict sanitary and operational restrictions as for tiles in a cafe or restaurant. As a result, it turns out to be very nice, stylish, and even more comfortable for the legs when you have to stand near the stove for several hours a day.
