Laying parquet boards diagonally with our own hands: Overview and Tips + Video

Laying parquet boards diagonally with our own hands: Overview and Tips + Video Rules for laying a parquet board to the diagonal. When decorating a floor, the use of parquet tiles is nothing new. Perhaps earlier you came across the fact that in old establishments or houses there is parquet, which has been serving its owners for a long time.

With good care, they would look perfect. To date, this material still does not lose popularity.

There are several options for installing parquet tiles, but most find diagonally laying parquet tiles to be the best solution.

Why exactly? In this article we will find out the answers to all questions.

Diagonal laying

When a person enters a new room, he involuntarily begins to assess its size. Perception in general is influenced by many factors. This can be the arrangement of furniture, as well as the way of laying the parquet floor.

Depending on the size of the room, parquet sometimes reduces it, and sometimes visually enlarges it. If the lines stretch along the room, then it will seem longer, and if across, then this gives balance. But when stacked diagonally, dissonance occurs, and this makes you look at it in a completely different way. The gaze will constantly aim at the corner where the main lines are.

This gives you an unusual effect that cannot be achieved with longitudinal or lateral installation.

The room will expand simultaneously in several directions. The lines will not be as noticeable if the parquet is chosen in a dark shade. For this reason, consider light parquet flooring with dark stripes near the seams to expand the space.

If you did not have time to take advantage of the recommendations and purchased the material, then to lay the parquet board diagonally, you will first have to carry out calculations. First you need to know how much area the new coating will occupy.

To do this, you just need to look at the documentation or measure the length and width with a tape measure and multiply them by each other. Next, we multiply the resulting value by the number of boards in a pack. This will give you the area that will be covered with one pack of material. At the end, divide the area of the room by a number from the area of the pack. This will give you a value that tells you how many packs of flooring to buy.

Hint: The resulting value is ideal, since this has not yet taken into account the pruning costs. You will need to find the derivative of the width of the room, the board and the coefficient, which is 1.42, after which we multiply all the values among themselves. We divide the result of the area by the area of the plank and so you get the stock you need.

Installation process

Preparing the surface

Irregularities when laying the parquet board diagonally are unacceptable.

If you try to lay it on a curved substrate, the result will be terrifying. The bad consequences of such an action will be the lifting of some strips and the broken integrity of the contour. When preparing the substrate for ideal installation, the material of manufacture should also be considered. If you have previously laid a tongue-and-groove board, then it will be an excellent substrate. If there are no drops and irregularities on the floor, and there are no sags and squeaks when walking, then you can install with minimal effort.

It will be enough just to lay the plywood along the contour and attach it to the board.

Ideally, completely different material is laid on the concrete floor, but not parquet board (although there is such a technology). This is due to the fact that concrete perfectly absorbs moisture and gives it away, which means that the parquet can be damaged soon due to dampness from the basement or from the neighbors' apartment. To avoid this, the surface is covered with moisture-resistant plywood in the form of sheets.

If the horizontal level deviation of the concrete floor is more than 2% per meter, the deficiencies should be corrected with a self-leveling mixture.

It will be enough to fill the floor according to the instructions and wait until it dries completely. This can take you from a couple of weeks to a month, and only after that you can start laying plywood and laying parquet.

There is another option when you have high enough ceilings and do not have time to wait for the floor to dry, so you can use logs for parquet. To do this, you will need to buy special logs with construction bolts, which will make it possible to adjust the height depending on irregularities. This option is not possible if you buy the right size board.

It is laid at a distance of 0.5 m from each other and attached to the floor with anchor bolts. In this case, the caps should be drowned, as they may interfere in the future. Each element is exposed under the level, where necessary, lining is made. After everything is ready, you can do the flooring and lay the parquet board diagonally.

Laying parquet boards diagonally with our own hands: Overview and Tips + Video With the selected laying method there are 2 options for the direction of movement when laying the board. The first involves moving from one corner to another. The second is laying the board from the middle and moving in both directions. If you chose the second option, then the decisive moment will be the beginning, the first board. Its angle and location must be measured as accurately as possible.

It should also be exactly in the middle of the room, if you chose an angle of 45 degrees as a reference point. Quite often, laying from the corner begins in those places where there is a very narrow space. Ideally, you should seek advice from someone who has experience in laying parquet boards diagonally.

If this is your first time doing this, it may be best to use mid-way styling. Tighten the beacon to make it easier to navigate.

It can be a strong line or string. It must be fixed in two corners of the room and raised above the surface by 4-8 mm. Now it will only be important to lay it on the lighthouse. To make it easier to navigate, unconnected parquet boards can be neatly placed along the rope.

After setting the first plank of the parquet, assemble the first line along the entire length.

Next, it will be easier for you to lay the second, third and other rows. At the same time, try to observe the weaving of the vertical seam. To achieve this, the second row starts with the parquet board that will be shortened by 1/3 or 1/2. Pay special attention to the places where the parquet planks meet the wall. To do this, you will need to make a wash at an angle.

Please note that there should be a gap of several millimeters from the wall. This is required to create a thermal seam.

Tip! While the work is at the initial stage, the parquet boards are not yet rigidly fixed. This means that the structure is susceptible to damage. To avoid this, take care of the weight that will press the parquet planks.

If you decide on such a transformation of the floor for the first time, do not choose the vertical laying of the parquet board. It is quite difficult to execute and requires tremendous effort. If you are neat and assertive, then you will succeed. In this case, you should never rush, and do not be afraid to ask for help from specialists.
