Marble plaster: composition, types, diy application technology on the facade

Most decorative plasters require some skill to apply in order to get a flawless result. But there are formulations that create great coverage without many layers and the formation of texture, and are worn quickly and easily. We are talking about marble plaster, widely used for finishing both exterior and interior surfaces.

Composition and characteristics

The main component of the plaster is filler - ground marble or granite of various grain sizes. Filler granules have a rich palette of natural shades, but to increase the decorativeness of the coating, they are very often tinted using a special technology.

Most manufacturers use acrylic resins as a binder, although there are marble plasters and mineral-based ones. It is easy to distinguish between them: acrylic compounds are transparent and translucent, mineral - white and colored.

In addition to the binder and filler, the plaster contains antibacterial agents, water-repellent additives, a solvent, various modifiers to increase plasticity, adhesion, color fastness and other properties of the coating. Additionally, the solution may contain glitter or mother-of-pearl, giving the plaster a more interesting look.

Depending on the granule size, the plaster is divided into fine-grained (grain thickness up to 0.

5 mm), medium-grained (1-3 mm) or coarse-grained (3-5 mm), respectively, and the texture of the coating is different. The filler fraction also affects the material consumption:

  • fine - from 1.5 to 2 kg / m2;
  • medium - from 2.5 to 3 kg / m2;
  • large - from 3 to 5 kg / m2.

The layer of mortar application should be at least 1.

5 times the filler grain size. On average, the coating thickness varies between 5-30 mm. The plaster dries for about a day, but here much depends on the temperature and humidity of the air, layer thickness and composition.

Marble plaster has very significant advantages:

  • ease of finishing - the composition is applied in one layer to the prepared base and smoothed with a float. No need to perfectly level the surface, form a relief, polish the finishing layer, as required, for example, by Venetian plaster;
  • strength - after drying, the coating becomes incredibly resistant to abrasion, mechanical stress, moisture and temperature changes;
  • durability - a high-quality finish stays on the facade for years, practically without losing its original appearance, without fading or crumbling;
  • decorativeness - marble plaster has a rich color palette, which allows you to create colored patterns on the walls, ornaments and art panels. Compositions with multi-colored chips form an interesting mosaic coating, and even plain plaster looks very attractive because of the polished granules that shimmer in the sun;
  • easy to clean - to wash off dust and dirt from the coating, it is enough to rinse it with water from hose, and plaque and soot from car exhaust can be easily erased with a brush and soapy water;
  • environmental friendliness - there are no toxic and chemically aggressive substances in the plaster, therefore it is completely safe from the environmental point of view.

In terms of cost, marble plaster is much more expensive than textured, but cheaper than Venetian.

Since special skills are not needed to apply it, you can apply it yourself and save a lot on the services of professionals. As for the shortcomings, the only drawback is the large weight of the coating, due to the presence of stone filler.

Scope of application

Marble plasters are excellent for finishing surfaces that require enhanced protection from moisture - foundations, plinths, external walls of houses, and also saunas, pools and bathrooms.

These solutions can be applied to any bases that are not prone to shrinkage: concrete, brickwork , foam and cinder blocks, chipboard and drywall, plastered surfaces.

Technology of applying marble plaster

Preparatory stage

The base for the plaster must be even, dry and strong, otherwise the coating will not last long.

Marble plaster: composition, types, diy application technology on the facade

The surface must be dry, clean, pre-leveled

Therefore, first, the walls must be cleaned with a brush from dirt and dust and carefully inspected surface. If there are crumbling areas, swelling and peeling of the plaster, thoroughly clean everything to a solid base. Use a metal brush or grinder with a nozzle for this.

Clean masonry joints especially well, as this is where voids are most likely to form.

Places affected by fungus, mold, after cleaning, are treated with chlorine-containing agents or antiseptic compounds. Efflorescences on the walls also need to be eliminated so that they do not appear on the surface of the new coating. For this, there are special cleaners that can be bought at any hardware store.

To seal grooves, chips and cracks, a standard cement mortar is prepared - a part of cement for 3-4 parts of sand.

Cracks must be expanded and cleaned of dust before sealing, and when filling with mortar, use fiberglass tape for reinforcement. Next, using a rule or level, check the plane of the walls and, if necessary, perform alignment with plaster.

Tip. Coarse-grained decorative mixtures can be applied to a rough leveling layer, and under fine and medium-grained plasters, a finishing layer is applied along the base layer, which, after drying, can be sanded. The thinner the coating, the smoother the base should be.

After plastering, wait until the walls are completely dry, and treat them with primer. To prevent the base from showing through the finish, it is recommended to choose a covering primer (for example, Astar Bayramix, Ceresit CT 16) and tint it before applying it to the wall to match the color of marble plaster. This applies to acrylic-based formulations, since a conventional primer with a quartz filler is suitable for mineral plasters.

With the surface ready, you can start with tools and materials.For work, you will need a drill with a mixer nozzle, a stainless steel grater and trowel, clean water at room temperature.

Plaster should be purchased with a margin of 7-10% of the total volume, since part of the material falls off during application and remains on the walls of the container and tools.

Tip. For monochromatic facade decoration, purchase plaster from one manufacturer (preferably one production batch). Even if the compositions of different brands are visually very similar, after being applied to the wall, they can noticeably differ in color and texture.

Hand Plastering

Plaster may be ready to use, but more often the mortar is too thick and needs to be diluted with water or thinner.

This information must be indicated on the label by the manufacturer, and the proportions are also given there. For example, 25 kg of Bayramiks plaster requires up to 1.5 liters of water, and 20 kg of Ceresit mix requires only 125 ml of water. In order not to spoil the expensive material, carefully study the instructions before proceeding with the decoration.

Step 1.

Open the container with the solution and mix well with a mixer. If necessary, bring to the desired consistency with water.

Step 2. Collect a small amount of solution on a trowel and apply to the surface while holding the tool at a 60 degree angle. The mixture is spread in an even layer, in one direction, rubbing with effort over the base.

The walls are processed in squares, preventing the edges of the plaster layer from drying out.

Step 3. After 20-30 minutes, when the plaster will begin to set, they begin to grout the surface.

To do this, use a stainless steel grater. The tool is firmly pressed against the wall and smooth the coating in a circular motion, trying to maintain the same pressure. It is not necessary to press too much, as well as to process one area for a long time.

Step 4. After the plaster is completely dry, the surface is covered with acrylic varnish or a water repellent.

For these purposes, it is most convenient to use a spray bottle.

Mechanical application of plaster

Mechanical application can be used to speed up the work process, especially if the area is large enough. Finishing is done using a device called a pneumatic crumb blower.

It is a small container with a nozzle at the bottom, a nozzle and a special nozzle connected to the compressor. The diameter of the hole for the solution supply should be 4-6 mm.

The surface is prepared as described above, after which the plaster solution is poured into the container, the air is injected with the compressor and the application is started. The working pressure should be 6-7 atmospheres. The nozzle of the device is kept at a distance of no more than half a meter from the surface and slowly moved from top to bottom, making sure that the solution covers the base evenly.

Creating a picture

For greater decorativeness of the facade during finishing, plaster of two or three colors is often used, creating curly inserts, stripes, various ornaments.

In this case, the technology for applying the solution has some differences, although there is nothing complicated here either.

To make colored inserts with straight lines, you will need masking tape, a spirit level, a long rail and a marker. First, a sketch of the elevation is drawn and the location and size of the colored areas is determined. Then they carry out the markings on the wall, clearly highlighting all the contours. Select the areas that will be finished first and stick strips of tape around their perimeter.

After that, they take the plaster of the desired color and carefully apply it to the prepared surface, trying not to go beyond the scotch tape.

After grouting the plaster, the adhesive tape is removed and new stripes are glued along the edge of the treated areas so as not to stain them with the solution. Plaster the rest of the area, grout, remove the masking tape. Thus, you can make inserts of any size and in any quantity, the main thing is to arrange them correctly and choose matching colors.

Plastering conditions

In order for the marble plaster coating to be truly reliable and durable, several important conditions must be observed when applying the solution:

  • the air temperature must be within + 5 .

    .. + 25 ° C, and the relative humidity is not more than 65%, and not only during application, but also during the drying period (up to 3 days);

  • if finishing is done from the south side, it is advisable to choose a cloudy day for work, or provide cover from the sun. Drying too quickly will lead to cracking of the plaster;
  • do not mix plaster of different brands in the same container, dilute the mixture with a solvent instead of water and vice versa, and also make the solution too liquid.

After applying the coating, the tools must be immediately cleaned of adhered solution, since it is very difficult to do after curing.

If you did not immediately soak the tools in water, you will have to clean them with a grinder

It is impossible to wet the plaster for the first three days until it will gain maximum strength.
