Metal staircase frame - production, cost and features + Photo and Video

Metal staircase frame - production, cost and features + Photo and Video Metal staircase frame: calculation, photo and features. Today there are a huge number of stairs with various methods of making the structure, but the most reliable options are to create a staircase frame made of metal. Due to the fact that it is metal that is used, the frame of the stairs can be made with any angle of rotation, which is very difficult to achieve if you use a frame made of wood.

Installation methods. There are two main options for how to install a metal frame structure: 1) Metal stairs with hidden installation.

2) Metal stairs with an open method of installation.

General information

Concealed construction

Concealed method of installation implies the use of those options the structure of the frame, to whose appearance there are no special requirements, since it is provided that in the future all visible parts will be closed. The metal frame that has been installed should be revetted, preferably with decorative material, so that everything fits into your interior, and the general style of the house is not violated.

As a material of manufacture, you can use relatively inexpensive channels or beams (I-beams) with angles of different sizes, to which the risers and steps will be fixed. The very same channel from the channel in the future will be covered with plasterboard or wood panels.

Important! In no case should you neglect the calculation of the frame of a staircase made of metal, since it will be necessary to know the load on the supporting elements so that the possibility of fracture of the structure during use is excluded.

Open structure

An open frame is a visible part of the staircase structure, which requires special processing and coating of paintwork. This option is visually perceived better, and with the right approach, it will perfectly fit into the staircase structure. By the type of manufacture, open types of structures can be divided into frame :

  • Metal staircase frame - production, cost and features + Photo and Video With 1 stringer.
  • With 2 stringers.

An open frame on one stringer is when a supporting beam is installed in the center of the staircase, on which gussets or platforms are installed to fix the steps. Half steps are not installed in this type of frame structure. Visually, this type of construction seems to be floating, airy and light. If you plan to install wide flights, then in order to eliminate the bending of the steps along the edge, we advise you to weld additional elements on the sides, namely consoles.

Open frame on two stringers - the installation system is somewhat similar to one stringer, but in this case the beams are located not in the center, but along the edge of the steps.

In order to fix the steps to the beams, fillets (kerchiefs) are installed, and the steps themselves are fixed from the inside so that the integrity of the tread is not violated. This type of frame is the most reliable and is intended even for wide marches.

In order to make kosoura, a rectangular metal profile is used. In shape, it is made in the form of a ladder or a straight supporting beam. An open staircase on a metal frame with your own hands requires that it be carefully processed, as well as that the welding seam is beautiful, and there is a high-quality coating with varnish or paint (without drips) so that the general appearance of the staircase is not damaged.

Calculation of dimensions and the sequence of manufacturing

Before you start creating a frame structure, you should decide on the type of structure, as well as calculate how much materials you need and take measurements. Calculation of the required parameters :

  • Measurement of the height between the floor of the second and first floors.
  • The width of the tread must be from 0.2 to 0.3 meters.

  • Riser height, from 0.16 to 0.2 meters.
  • The staircase must have a width of at least 0.9 meters.

  • The angle of inclination of the stairs, the allowable value is from 30 to 45 degrees.

All of the above interval limits when calculating the steps are required for the convenience of moving around the structure.

Formulas for these calculations:

  1. The formula for convenience is: e - j = 12 cm.
  2. Formula safety is equal to: e + j = 12 cm.
  3. The formula of the step is: e +2 j = 62 (60-64) cm.

Moreover, the size of the tread is designated as "e" , and the size of the riser is "j", "a".

We plan the stages of work

When performing these calculations, it will not be superfluous to immediately determine the stages of the work:

  1. Metal staircase frame - production, cost and features + Photo and Video Prepare the opening of the required size.
  2. Make the frame of the stairs from metal to the second floor based on perfect calculations.
  3. Assemble the entire structure on site.

Making a frame with your own hands

Ladders with a frame made of metal of simple structures are not so difficult to make with your own hands if you have the skills to work with a welding machine .

.. Let's find out what are the main stages of work on the manufacture of a metal frame for the most common types of structures.

Marching staircase

In order to make the staircase yourself, or rather, its frame, you will need a channel or a metal profile of a rectangular shape, as well as corners in order to make kerchiefs under the steps. Depending on what material you have chosen for manufacturing (channel or metal profile), weld the frame, and weld the corners on top of the side face of the channel for installing the steps.

By the way, you can fix the steps with using two methods :

  1. Direct laying on the corners, the method of attachment with bolts (in this case - through and through) or screws that will be screwed from the inside through the special corner holes in the tread.
  2. Add additional strips of the required length from the same corner to the fixed corners, so that you end up with a rectangular frame, on which the steps will be laid and fixed in the future.

The next step is to clean the weld seam, for this you can use a file or speed up the process and use the attachment with a grinding disc on the drill. Before starting painting, the metal structure must be treated with a protective solution to prevent the formation of rust.

Frame for a spiral staircase

To create a frame for a spiral staircase with your own hands, you will need two pipes :

  1. It is required for the central bearing pillar and it is made from a pipe with the necessary parameters in the form of length and diameter.

  2. Required to fix the steps - a pipe with the same length, but slightly larger diameter.

The pipe, which is intended for fixing the steps, must be cut into equal lengths (sleeves), the length of which varies from 0.23 to 0.26 meters. To save money, you can use the remaining pipes as an option, if you have any, the main thing is that they have the same diameter.

Please note that pipe sections with a large diameter must be cut at an angle of only 90 degrees to ensure the correct angle of installation of the steps.

The cut segments must necessarily sit on the central post tightly, without the slightest backlash or distortion. If during installation it is not possible to fit the segments tightly, use special O-rings, which can also be made yourself from a rod with the required diameter. To obtain the required size of the O-ring, screw the rod onto the support post.

The resulting rings can be welded into sections for secure fixation and processed with a drill grinding attachment against unevenness.

You can also immediately weld the steps to the central beam, but in this case the process of correct fastening will be complicated, and with the help of segments it is much easier to set the steps to the required step and angle of inclination. To make it easier to make steps of the same size, use a special template. To do this, you need a piece of plywood and wooden slats (a few are enough). They should be fixed to the plywood in order to get the steps of the desired shape.

For the metal staircase frame, make the required number of future steps, install the corners or profile pipes in the created template and weld everything together with sleeves from the second pipe.

When the assembly is complete, clean the prepared steps along the weld seams from burrs and irregularities. When all the work described above is completed, proceed with the installation of the spiral staircase itself, and the ready-made steps to which the segments are attached can be put on the central pipe and the finished structure installed at the installation site. For greater reliability, the lower part of the central post should be concreted into the floor.

When the installation is completed, set the steps in a spiral to the desired step and angle, and in order for the structure to be strong and securely fixed, weld it together using jumpers. The steps should be installed and fixed after priming and painting all elements of the metal staircase.

How to make anti-corrosion treatment

In order to ensure durability and long service life for your ladder, you should properly process it.

Anti-corrosion treatment will consist of the following steps :

  • The structure should be degreased.
  • Treat rust with a converter.
  • Prime everything.

Degreasing is carried out by processing the elements of the stairs made of metal, for this it is suitable to use a rag moistened with any organic solvent or without acetone, gasoline, white alcohol.

The processing of rust with a converter is carried out as follows - a sulfate layer without gaps is applied with a brush to the surface of the stairs and metal objects. Such solutions can be bought ready-made in special stores.

The last stage of treatment is a primer, which is applied in a dense layer without gaps, and in one layer with a spray gun or a brush. For good drying, you need to wait at least a day. Most often, primer GF No.

21 is used for priming, which has a brown and sometimes grayish tint. If you process all the metal of the frame in the correct sequence, you can ensure a long service life and protect yourself from further costs for another processing.
