Modern reflective paint: material characteristics

Reflective paint - luminous paint, which contains active reflective elements. Reflective paint can be considered if three conditions are met simultaneously:

  1. The presence of fluorescent pigments in the paint for glowing in the dark or in poor visibility conditions.
  2. The presence of glass beads in the paint - finely crushed mirror balls for the actual optical effect of light reflection.
  3. The effectiveness of these glass beads, that is, that the reflective elements are on the paint film, and not under it. Then the light, falling on the glass ball, rests against its back wall and returns back to the source.

It is the glass beads that make the luminous paint reflective. Luminous paint without this element does not reflect the light directed at it. Therefore, paint in spray cans, which manufacturers often call reflective, is not. The reason for this is the absence of glass beads in the composition, since they will not pass through the spray nozzle.

Where is reflective paint used?

Reflective paint is used outdoors for signal marking of objects at night and in low light conditions.

The scope of application is mainly industrial and truly multifaceted: fences of roads, bridges and overpasses, quay walls of ferries, metal structures of towers, helipads, parking stops, their vertical structures, pipelines, advertising and information steles and other metal structures, in mines for marking the altitude of the descent, in woodworking and logging and other objects.

The use of reflective paint on boundary objects

In private use, paint is rarely used, as a rule, when painting protective structures: fences, barriers and other surfaces.

The process of applying reflective paint to the surface

Surface preparation

Since the paint is primarily decorative focus, surface preparation requirements should be flexible. Modern reflective paint does not require the obligatory sandblasting or shot blasting of the surface. The substrate can be prepared using a hand tool, a router bit and metal brushes.

Remove mill scale and rusty areas from the surface. In the future, before applying the composition, it is necessary to dust and degrease the metal with a thinner. A minimum time must elapse between the completion of surface preparation and the actual application of the material so that the surface does not oxidize.

Paint application

Paint application does not require any special knowledge. However, it is necessary to follow the manufacturer's application guidelines.

First, the surface must be primed with a material compatible with the base paint. It is best to stick to one binder in both materials. So, if the reflective paint itself has an acrylic composition, it is better to select the primer also from acrylates. Also, it will not be superfluous to inquire with the manufacturer so that he guarantees compatibility with the brand of a particular primer. But it is better, of course, to purchase both paint and primer in one place.

After applying the primer, usually several layers, and drying it, it takes about 3-6 hours, two or three layers of paint are also applied. Depending on the temperature, the paint dries for 3-6 hours each layer. Further, in order to remove the glass beads from under the paint film, an activator is applied in a thin layer.

By the way, all paint components are applied at a temperature of 5 ° C.

Reflective paint care and cost

If the contractor has performed the entire procedure for applying reflective paint correctly, the service life will be 5-10 years.

In this case, 1-2 a year, it is necessary to wipe the paint layer with an activator to open the balls.

To care for the reflective surface, it is enough to wipe it with an activator 1-2 times a year

The cost of modern reflective paint cannot be less 800-1000 rubles. What caused this price? Firstly, the material of the pigments must be made in Europe. Only such paint will not fade in the sun during its entire service life. In addition, the presence of balls in the paint - like its business card - also affects the price.

In addition, in the kit for the paint, you need to purchase an activator to remove glass beads from under the paint film, which also affects the price upward. However, this cost is justified by the high durability of the coating and its effective decorative properties.

How to choose and where to buy reflective paint?

The first thing to remember when buying reflective paint is the presence of glass beads in its composition. If they are not included in the paint, feel free to refuse the supplier's offer. You are offered any other, but not reflective paint.

Also pay attention to the cost of paint. A material with a service life of more than 5 years costs, as a rule, at least 800 rubles. When using cheaper paints, there is a possibility that the pigments will be washed out in ultraviolet light and the surface will have to be repainted again.

Another important aspect that needs to be paid attention to is the experience and reputation of the manufacturer. To date, SV-101 paint from the Moscow manufacturer V Cyber has proven itself well.

The plant has been operating in the market of reflective paints and varnishes since 2003 and has extensive experience in their manufacture.
