Non-woven wallpaper: advantages and disadvantages Non-woven wallpaper: advantages and disadvantages

Traditionally, wallpaper remained popular for wall decoration during renovation work. At the moment there are many materials and colors, and in order to choose the most suitable ones, you need to familiarize yourself with their parameters. Non-woven wallpaper has recently become popular, which will be discussed below.

What is non-woven fabrics?

Non-woven fabric is a non-woven fabric based on cellulose fibers. It is made from unmodified and modified paper fibers.

It contains polyester special impregnation for gluing.

Manufacturing is performed by a hot stamping method. Externally, the non-woven fabric resembles paper, and the touch is fabric. The following properties of the material can be noted:

  • Non-woven wallpaper: advantages and disadvantages Interaction with the paint and varnish material.
  • Retention of shape - a material, if crumpled, is able to easily restore its previous appearance.

  • Air permeability.
  • Moisture resistance - dries quickly and will not shrink.
  • Durability - Unlike regular paper, non-woven liner is not easily erased or torn.

Such wallpapers can be classified as anti-vandal, as they have excellent durability and resistance to external factors.

Advantages and disadvantages

There are the following pros and cons of non-woven wallpaper:

  1. Long Life - If you do not frequently replace wall surfaces, then non-woven is the ideal choice.

Due to the solid base, the material will be durable.

  2. Environmental friendliness - there are varieties of the hypoallergenic type that do not cause any harm to health. This will only apply to non-woven wallpaper.
  3. Washable - They are moisture resistant and can therefore be wiped clean with a soft cloth. They dry out quickly, but this should not be abused.

  4. Ease of use - since they are very dense, they can be glued to any type of surface, even with errors. Such disadvantages will be hidden due to the structure of the canvases. They can be easily glued, because the composition only needs to be applied to the walls.
  5. They will have a wider roll width than paper versions. This saves time during the gluing process, and further reduces the number of joints between the strips.

  6. Non-woven fabrics, when in contact with the adhesive, do not shrink, and still do not change shape when dry, as can often be the case with paper counterparts. So, the seams do not diverge, and there will be no empty space at the joints.
  7. After gluing, such wallpapers are highly breathable, so that moisture does not accumulate under them, and fungal colonies do not appear yet.
  8. Resistance to fire - in case of fire, the wallpaper will resist fire for a long time, and in case of fire, harmful components will not be released into the environment.
  9. You can choose canvases for coloring - this can give free rein to the designer's imagination.

There are also disadvantages:

  • The price is too high.
  • Vinyl fabrics with a non-woven base have a relief pattern, and are also capable of accumulating dust and dirt, and are definitely not suitable for allergy sufferers.

As you can see, there are much fewer shortcomings.

Properties and characteristics

Among the technical parameters of such a material, their weight is noted. They are much heavier than paper ones, which means that their installation requires a special, thicker adhesive composition.

There are 3 main varieties:

  • Non-woven - made of several layers, and they do not need to be coated with glue when gluing, because they are pre-saturated with binders, which gives them all the properties listed above.
  • On the basis of non-woven - the main layer is non-woven, and the decorative (that is, top) can be vinyl, paper or textile. The base of non-woven paper coated with paper is of low cost, and such canvases are one-, two- or three-layer. A filler is introduced between the layers, and then the material is pressed, and an unusual protruding pattern is obtained. Such canvases are environmentally friendly, they are highly breathable.

But they are not suitable for rooms with high humidity, and they are also susceptible to external damage. Today, non-woven-based vinyl materials are popular. Vinyl spraying gives a decorative look to the coating, and the options for colors and textures are not limited. They are also not the most expensive, damage resistant, and can be easily washed. The disadvantages are that vinyl does not allow air to pass through and is highly flammable.

Cloths of textiles are a layer of non-woven fabric, on top of which textiles are applied (silk, velor, linen, jute, cotton). Such canvases are spectacular, elegant. When using them, it is worth noting the additional sound and thermal insulation of the walls. Such wallpapers require careful care, and they absorb aromas, and are also capable of accumulating dust.

For painting - non-woven wallpaper for painting has light colors.

It is best to use water based paint. When painting, the joints between the canvases will become invisible under the paintwork layer. In this case, the walls can be repainted 3-5 times, and so it will be possible to change the design of the room with tangible savings. In addition, owners can let their imaginations run wild.

Now let's talk about the dimensions.

The width of ordinary canvases is 53 cm. Usually non-woven canvases are one meter long, and the roll width is 106 cm. The most popular length is 10 meters, and when creating vinyl canvases at 53 cm, the designation of 15 meters is used for staining. Meter rolls on non-woven for painting are produced with a length of 25 meters. Thickness also varies, and thick canvases help hide the unevenness of the walls, but sometimes there are problems with mechanical damage.

Thin ones are much more stable, but the wall must be prepared in advance for pasting, hiding all the disadvantages.

Varieties. There are several types of canvases based on their surface. The features below are described, knowing which you can make the right choice. The varieties are as follows:

  1. Smooth - this is a wallpaper with a perfectly smooth surface, which will be the final stage in the wall preparation for applying a decorative coating (this can be wallpaper, paint or decorative plaster).

If we are talking about staining, the colors on the wallpaper will be very saturated, the paint will be applied without irregularities and streaks. The thickness will depend on the wall defects, and the more there are, the thicker the linen layer should be.

  2. Foamed - canvases with medium thickness, have an embossed soft surface, which will be decorated with decorative bright elements. It can be glitter or roughness. Foam coverings perfectly mask wall irregularities, resistant to water, fire, environmentally friendly, but the surface will be damaged from any mechanical damage.

  3. Embossed - textured wallpaper with embossing is designed to give a room a three-dimensional effect. It can be a smooth canvas or a raised pattern for a 3D effect. Perfectly hides the disadvantages of the walls (bumps and cracks). Structural webs are ideal for coloring. They are monochromatic, have a deep relief, and due to the non-woven layer they are moisture resistant, hardy, do not deform and can be easily glued.

  4. Non-woven wallpaper for painting is the most convenient option for owners with a great imagination and design vein. They can also be glued to all surfaces, and after installation, you just need to wait for perfect drying (about 2 days), and only then start painting. It can be not just wall coverings, but also ceiling coverings. Embossed canvases can be used together with ceiling tiles.

Textured wallpapers have decorative surfaces.

Already painted wallpaper can be repainted in the future. This is a great opportunity to revitalize your interior without spending too much money. For staining, use dispersed or water-based paint.

Gamut of colors

All indoor surfaces must be in harmony. Wall colors, as well as shades of the ceiling and floor, do not have to be the same and merge into a single spot, but they must be chosen intelligently so that there is no bad taste:

  1. Non-woven wallpaper: advantages and disadvantages White plain fabrics are great for dyeing.

By choosing them, you will be able to provide yourself with the opportunity to choose all colors for the walls, according to your mood, since you can cover with paintwork from several times during the entire operational period. The colors can be combined on a single wall or painted all 4 in different shades. You can also apply drawings. It will be especially good, or rather even appropriate, to look in a children's room.Even a child is able to try himself in the role of an artist, to make the mood, and if it doesn't work out well, everything can be repainted.

The option is universal. White does not have to be painted over, it is perfect for a French / minimalist style. It can also appear in contrast to other surfaces or pieces of furniture. But with white, you need to be very careful, not to spoil the wallpaper and not to pollute. It is advisable not to use them in the hallway.

  2. Green is usually calming. It is more suitable for a nursery or living room.
  3. Warm shades of yellow are ideal for the kitchen, nursery or hallway.
  4. Dark tones will add solidity or seriousness to the room. This is perfect for classic style, loft or minimalism.

This wallpaper can also be used in a large living room, bedroom or hallway with a large width. Ideally, pieces of furniture contrasted with dark colored linens.

  5. Photo printing is a huge risk, but if handled by a tasteful person, the design will be perfect. Photomurals with landscapes familiar to the Soviet space will remain in the past. Today we are offered a huge selection of stylish, original and modern prints.

Their number is limitless, and you just have to choose the most suitable one.

But during installation, you need to be as careful as possible so that all the elements of the picture are assembled as needed, without errors, butt-to-end. Photo printing will ideally fit into all rooms, depending on the chosen design, from the hallway to the nursery.

The choice of a pattern for the wallpaper is probably one of the most favorite stages of renovation. The pattern will depend on the room, style direction and filling elements:

Stone-like canvases have become a fashionable trend.

They are suitable for both residential and public spaces, and also help to create an effective bar / cafe design.

  • In the house / apartment, brick wallpaper will be successfully glued in the hallway. Subject to proper placement, wallpaper with a brick print fits perfectly into the working kitchen area. You can also decorate the dining room. In the rest of the rooms, brick wallpaper will be appropriate in the loft style.

The best choice would be a red brick, and white is more suitable for minimalism. High quality waterproof stone print wallpaper can be pasted in the bathroom.

  • When choosing striped wallpaper, you need to prepare the walls perfectly, because if they are uneven, then the distorted lines will give away all the roughness of the walls. For a cozy, warm environment, pastel stripes (tones such as cream, pale yellow, beige, gold and light gray) are ideal. Natural wood colors give the room a natural look.

If you need to focus on the wallpaper or distract your eyes from other room imperfections, it is better to use bright colors.Through horizontal stripes, you can visually reduce ceilings and increase the area, and vertical lines will rise the walls and slightly narrow the room. It's great if any of the pieces of furniture or accessories will overlap in color with striped wallpaper. You can choose a sofa, curtains, chair upholstery to match the stripes. It is important that the striped wallpaper had plain curtains.

  • Floral prints are suitable for country, oriental, retro or Provence style. Roses on the walls will look especially impressive. You can even use 3D wallpaper to add volume to the flowers.
  • The "matting" pattern is an interlacing of threads with a checkerboard uneven surface. Such wallpapers are sold both for coloring and with applied paintwork materials.

Glue them on a perfectly flat surface.
