OSB paint for outdoor use - technology of choice and instructions!

Oriented strand boards are very widely used in construction, including for facades. OSB cladding allows you to reduce costs, reduce the time required to complete the work, and does not require much effort for installation. During the manufacturing process, the material undergoes a protective treatment with hydrophobic impregnations, and this is quite enough for its safety during transportation and installation. But for long-term operation under the influence of weather conditions, such protection is not enough, and you cannot do without finishing. The easiest and most affordable way is painting.

How to paint OSB board

Which paints are suitable for OSB

Painting OSB performs two functions - protective and decorative. The film formed after painting blocks the access of moisture and any kind of contamination, which prolongs the life of the material. In addition, the coloring layer masks the texture of the boards and small defects on the surface, and makes it aesthetically pleasing. The main prerequisite for this is the correct choice of dye.

Almost 90% of the OSB composition is wood chips and shavings, which means that for painting you can use the same products that are used for external processing of natural wood.

In this case, the paint must have high decorative properties, durability of the coating, increased hydrophobicity and resistance to ultraviolet light. Oil, alkyd and acrylic paints meet these requirements to varying degrees, so we will consider each type in more detail.

Oil paints

Benefits of oil paint

Modern oil paints have an improved composition, due to which they provide high protection of wooden surfaces even in the most adverse conditions. Special additives made it possible to increase the hydrophobicity of the paint, its resistance to fading and temperature changes, and to reduce the drying time. As you know, oil paints dry longer than others, sometimes it takes from 2-3 days to a week, but now you can easily find compositions that dry for 12 hours.

Oil-based paints are quite viscous, which ensures high adhesion to the base. In addition, this quality contributes to uniform application and no spatter. The paint easily applies to OSB, fills in all small irregularities and pores, forms a strong, reliable coating. After drying, such a surface can be washed without fear of damaging the protective layer.

In terms of decorative qualities, oil paints are in no way inferior to other types.

They are divided into matte, semi-matte and glossy, and the color palette of each group is very wide. On sale there are ready-to-use paints and thick-grated compounds that you need to dilute yourself. To obtain a high-quality coating per 1 kg of thickly grated mass, 50 g of drying oil or an appropriate film-former is required. After dilution with linseed oil, if necessary, you can add a solvent to the paint, but not more than 5% of the total mass.

Disadvantages of oil few colors, but they are quite weighty. First of all, this is a short service life: even if all the necessary painting requirements are met, after 2-3 years the walls will have to be painted again.

In addition, oil paints, with rare exceptions, have a very pungent odor and dry longer than other compositions.

Alkyd enamels

OSB paint for outdoor use - technology of choice and instructions!

Alkyd enamels

Compositions based on alkyd resins have good waterproof and weatherproof. Such paints are absorbed into the upper layers of the wood and form a very durable film on the surface. They are frost-resistant, low-toxic, perfectly tolerate temperature extremes, and have low abrasion resistance. It takes 2 to 24 hours to dry, depending on the additives in the composition.

The color range of alkyd enamels is very wide, there are glossy and matte compositions, so choosing the right option is not difficult. The average consumption of such paint is 200 ml per square meter, and 2 coats are required for high-quality staining. It is necessary to apply enamel only on an absolutely dry and clean surface at a temperature of + 5 to 30 degrees. Failure to do so will result in paint peeling and blistering.

The main disadvantage of alkyd compounds is flammability and the presence of a pungent odor.

In addition, such paints are not very resistant to alkaline attack, therefore, only neutral agents must be used to clean the painted surface.

Water-soluble paints

Acrylic paints for exterior decoration OSB are used less often, although in general they are considered the most versatile and practical. Despite the presence of water in the composition, they almost do not cause swelling of the base, if, of course, waterproof sheets are used. When applying paint in a thin layer, water molecules evaporate very quickly and do not have time to penetrate into the base, and a strong elastic film of polymers remains on the surface. You only need to paint the pre-primed sheets, otherwise the paint will collect in drops and drain.

Latex and silicone water-based compositions are considered more effective for finishing OSB. These paints are nonflammable, resistant to fading and abrasion, vapor permeable, and have high adhesion. Most of them have anti-fungal properties, which is especially important for a wooden base. The consumption of water-soluble paints varies from 60 to 300 ml per square meter, the service life is from 3 to 15 years. The best characteristics are possessed by paints of foreign production - Great Britain, Germany, Finland.

On sale there are both ready-to-use paints and basic compositions that you need to tint yourself. The range of coloring pigments is much wider than the color palette of oil and alkyd enamels, and you can mix several colors at once.

There are almost no disadvantages of water-based paints, if do not consider too high a cost in comparison with oil and alkyd compositions. At the same time, a high-quality latex or silicone paint coating will serve you at least 10 years, and the oil surface will have to be renewed three or even four times during this period.

Use of primer paints

In addition to the described coloring compositions, special primer paints deserve special attention, which can be used as a base for decorative coatings and as an independent finish.

They can be tinted in different colors, are resistant to fading and weathering, and are distinguished by very high adhesion. Such compositions can be used on any surfaces, but there are options specifically for OSB, for example, Holzer OSB GRUND primer paint.

OSB staining technology

In principle, painting of oriented strand boards does not have any special differences, but there are some nuances that you need to know about before starting finishing works. This is especially important for those who have not yet dealt with such material.

Surface preparation

For external use only OSB-3 and OSB-4, with improved water repellency, are suitable. Such material tolerates high air humidity, short-term wetting, sudden temperature changes and other negative influences well. Sheets intended for indoor use are quickly saturated with water and deform in such conditions.

OSB-3

It is better to paint after installing the OSB panels, because during the installation process, additional grinding or fitting of surfaces may be required.

Step 1. Take sanding paper and start grinding the front surface of the OSB sheets. In production, they are covered with a protective layer of varnish-wax composition, and if this layer is not removed, the primer and paint will not be able to adhere to the material. Additionally, sanding helps mask the texture.

OSB grinding is a long and laborious process

Step 2. Wipe the slabs from dust with a clean dry cloth ... The indentations from the caps of the screws and the remaining irregularities are sealed with a putty on an oil-adhesive basis (for example, Tex "Universal", "Prospectors").

The joints between the sheets are filled with the same composition.

Step 3 . 3-4 hours after applying the putty, the treated areas should be sanded to achieve maximum smoothness. Take fine-grained sandpaper.

Step 4.

Wipe the surface from dust again and proceed to priming.

Primer application

Wood primer for painting

The best option for OSB boards is a reinforcing acrylic primer on a polymer base. It penetrates well into the depth of the material, is evenly distributed, all types of paints perfectly fit on it. It is convenient to use a roller with a short dense pile to apply the composition. The roller is rolled vertically, in even parallel stripes, avoiding overlapping.

Subsequently, such areas will stand out with lighter spots against the general background.

Step 5 . When the primer is dry, proceed directly to painting. With a paint brush, carefully paint over the joints around the perimeter of the sheet, then the open edges. Here absorption occurs more intensively, so the paint is applied in a thick layer.

In the photo there is a paint brush for painting OSB

Step 6. Next, take a roller, roll it out well in a paint bath and distribute the paint in even stripes in one direction. As with the primer, stripes should be avoided so that the surface color is as uniform as possible.

Paint application

Step 7. After applying the base coat, wait for the time indicated by the manufacturer, and only then paint the surface again.

The procedure is the same, only now the movements of the roller should be perpendicular to the direction of the previous layer. That is, if the first time you rolled the roller vertically, then the second time you paint horizontally.

This completes the painting process, and all that remains is to wait until it is completely dry. Avoid working in windy weather and before rain, otherwise you will have to forget about the quality of the coating. Also, exclude any renovation work on the facade while the paint is drying.
