Painting vinyl wallpaper and choosing a means for coloring
Renovation of an apartment will always be fraught with difficulties in choosing materials for interior decoration.
One of the most popular methods for varying the look of walls is to wallpaper them. There are different types of wallpapers and one of them is the most popular vinyl.
There are various types of structures and colors on the building materials market, but if you still didn't find the right ones, the best solution would be painting vinyl wallpaper.
Vinyl wallcoverings are materials that consist of two layers - upper and lower.
Depending on what they are made of, and you can classify vinyl coverings:
- The bottom layer or base - they are thicker, and distinguish wallpaper on paper and non-woven backing.
- The top layer, that is, decorative.
There are several types of vinyl-type wallpaper appearance. They will be suitable for different types of premises. For example, for a sanitary unit and a kitchen area, more dense and moisture-resistant varieties are made, which consist of several layers of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and certain options are made using hot stamping technology, applying various textures.
It is also possible to paint only wallpaper made of foamed vinyl and non-woven, because they absorb the paint and do not deform under the influence of the water contained in it. At the moment, manufacturers indicate whether dyeing is possible, and they also produce separate lines for dyeing white or other light shades with various reliefs. When choosing a wall covering, one should take into account its relief - the finer and more complex pattern is depicted on the surface of the wallpaper, the more difficult it is to paint it.
Volumetric ornaments require a large number of layers and paint.
Please note that if this is your first time painting the wall surfaces yourself, it is better to give preference to wallpaper that has small and simple patterns.
Together with a large selection of wallpapers, there are many types of paint and varnish products, and having decided on the first, you should pay no less attention to the second. The main rule is that the paint should not contain toxic and chemically active substances. Organic-based paints - alkyd, oil and enamel, are not suitable for staining.
Silicate and glue options will also not be the best option, not just for vinyl types of wallpaper, but also for wall coverings in the house as a whole.Water-based paints and varnishes are perfect, because they are easy and simple to apply, and you can buy a ready-made one of a certain shade or give the required color yourself using special dyes. With its help, the surface can be made glossy and matte (still semi-glossy), as well as satin. The matte type of coating looks great in a large room, and a glossy one can visually expand dark and small rooms. The satin surface is suitable for any room size.
Water-based paints can be:
- Water-based paints. Such a coating is antistatic, and also has many other advantages, but it is not intended for wet cleaning - if you wipe the walls with a wet rag, then the paint will remain on it.
- Dispersion - water-based paint made of synthetic polymer (oil or resin). After applying the paint and varnish composition to the surface of the walls, the water will begin to evaporate, and the solid particles form an impenetrable and smooth surface.
- Acrylic - painting vinyl-based wallpaper with such compositions dries quickly, and when several shades are applied, nothing will mix, the coating will withstand washing, including the use of cleaning agents.
- Latex - they are very expensive, but make it possible to create a glossy and even coating with a long service life. The paint can be applied to walls covered with old wallpaper.
Water-based paint should be used to paint walls in the bedroom, living room or children's room, as well as latex and acrylic paint - in any room, dispersion paints are ideal for a bathroom or kitchen. Before buying paint, you should calculate its required volume depending on the type of paint, the area of the room and the required shade. If the paint is not tinted immediately, then it is worth buying a color scheme.
Its amount will depend on the brightness of the colors that you need. When mixing paint and dye, apply the composition to a small area of wallpaper or walls, and then wait until it dries completely to determine the final shade. Usually the paint is thick enough and difficult to apply to the wall surface. it is enough to dilute it with clean water to a consistency that resembles sour cream. You can also repaint old walls with any kind of paint.
So that it lies flat and does not peel off, the existing coating should be pretreated, dust and dirt should be removed, and defects should be putty. In certain cases, an additional priming process may be required.
Paint and wallpaper are selected, and further painting is required. Before starting work, the method of applying the paint and varnish should be selected:
cut the panel of the required length from the roll, apply paint and after drying (about an hour later) proceed to pasting.
Prepare all the necessary tools in advance. You can apply paint using a roller, brush, spray gun or even a spray bottle. When choosing a roller, you should pay attention to the pile height - the stronger and deeper the pattern relief on the wallpaper, the longer the pile should be.
It will be inconvenient to apply with a foam sponge, because it will spoil the texture and will not allow an even paint layer to be applied. Moreover, a paint tray, soft rags and masking tape are required. Floors should be covered with foil or newspapers, paper, and gloves, glasses and a hat should be worn for your own protection.
If there is wallpaper for painting on the surface of the ceilings, then for convenience, you should buy an extension telescope for the roller. It is best to paint the walls with a spray gun - this way the color will be uniform and even.
If there is no spray gun, it is important to use a roller to paint the walls, and a small brush to work out the corners / joints. The procedure for painting vinyl-type wallpaper is as follows:
- Seal all joints with masking tape on the wall coverings near doors, baseboards and floor.
- Cover the floors and all furniture in the room.
- Remove all dirt and dust from the surface with a slightly damp cloth or vacuum cleaner.
- Stir the paint in the can and pour a small amount into the tray.
- The ceiling should be painted first, and the wall after.
- It is important to paint the ceiling parallel to the incident light so that no strokes are visible.
- The walls are painted from bottom to top.
- When applying paint in several coats, wait until each coat is completely dry before applying a new one.
- The final color as well as the gloss will fully develop 3 days after staining.
Vinyl wallpaper can be painted using different methods. Keep in mind that not all of them are available for execution, but certain ones can be used and not resort to the help of a specialist.
The process is laborious, and it will require two people to work at once - one will apply paint, and the other will apply fabric.
The method involves decorating the wallpaper before gluing. The paint should be applied to the surface of the wallpaper from the inside, and after complete drying, glue it to the wall surface. It will turn out to be very effective.
In order to separate the colors, masking tape is used. The method is suitable for wallpaper with a small, or, conversely, a large relief, because in places where the tape does not touch the base, the paint will crack, and straight lines will not work. This method is suitable if you have chosen a couple of types of wallpaper or those that are able to imitate the presence of a dividing plinth on the walls.
this method is very simple, and makes it possible to easily apply beautiful drawings to the wallpaper. The main rule of work is the clarity of actions, because the lanes must be even.
A textured print will remain on it, and the method makes it possible to obtain a beautiful and non-standard, however, this requires a lot of time.
Wallpaper dyeing - advantages and disadvantages
Vinyl-type wallpaper dyeing is inexpensive and a simple method to give the interior the desired look.
The variety of the presented assortment of vinyl-look wallpapers makes it possible to bring different ideas to life. If you choose a simple relief, then you can update the appearance of the rooms almost every year, simply by changing the shades of paint. This is done extremely quickly, with your own hands, and there is no need to acquire complex devices.
The disadvantage of this method is paint and varnish splashes, which scatter from the sprayer or roller, but it is easier to cope with them than to remove the old wallpaper and glue the new one. The vinyl covering can be painted, and it is very convenient and inexpensive to do it, the main thing is to approach the process in an organized way, choosing the required color of the wall covering, as well as paint. You will learn more about staining from the video.
