Parameters and technical characteristics of diodes in LED backlights The LED backlight can have different diode parameters. Today on the market there is a huge variety of varieties of LED strips. In modern interiors LED backlights are used to illuminate ceiling and wall niches. LEDs are a kind of unique lighting elements that can bring to life the most original solutions and ideas.

By its design, this tape is represented by a copper printed circuit board of small dimensions: from two to three millimeters in height and from eight to ten millimeters in width.

LEDs are soldered to the board at a scattering angle of one hundred and twenty degrees. On the reverse side of the tape there is a self-adhesive layer for easy attachment to the surface.

Where can it be used?

Flexible and compact, the tape is multifunctional. It is considered an indispensable element for lighting in a hard-to-reach place, when highlighting structures on the ceiling, in a niche, steps, kitchen working area, floor contour lighting.

Such backlights are often used when illuminating architectural structures, advertising signs and billboards.

In cars for highlighting the dashboard, trunk, interior.

The wiring diagram is represented by MDS modules connected in parallel, so that the strip can be cut in parts. There are pins at each end of the module for soldering wires.

Note: Self-adhesive backing can be glued to plastic, metal, glass, wood surfaces.


Diode strips are of one-color and multi-color glow, sealed and open type, and also have a side glow.

Monochrome color bar contains all primary colors. They are often used to illuminate shelves and various niches. The multicolor ones combine several colors in one ribbon. This is how a variety of palette is achieved with the help of optical mixing of shades. The color is regulated by a special controller.

The basic model of such a control device is capable of transmitting up to three million shades, and the more advanced version up to 16 m. With the help of the controller, you can configure the colors to change automatically, as well as their brightness and remote switching on and off.

Open ones do not have any protection, that is, they are open and vulnerable to moisture and mechanical stress, but they are not expensive. They are mainly used for decorative lighting in the interior.

Sealed ones are represented by tapes coated with transparent sealant, which does not conduct current.

It protects the LEDs from moisture and dirt. These tapes are available with different degrees of protection depending on the thickness of the sealed material.

A sealed form is used mainly in rooms with high humidity, namely in the bathroom, toilet, in the kitchen.

They can also be installed in floors and stair treads thanks to their good impact protection.

Side-glow tapes have cylindrical diodes at the board ends. Due to the fact that the diodes are located at the end, the direction of light changes, i.e. the glow occurs in the longitudinal direction along the surface.

Tapes of this type are used to create backlights for billboards.


The main parameter of the difference between diode strips is their type. Today, single-color tapes are available in two types -smd 3028 and 5050, where the numbers indicate the length and width of the diodes. For example, smd 3028 denotes a diode strip with diode dimensions 3 * 2, 8mm.

The next distinguishing parameter is the density, namely the number of diodes located on 1m of tape.

There are models from thirty to two hundred and forty units per 1 m.

If the diodes create a heavy load on the board, the operating voltage value can be more than 24 or 36V. And in some modifications, work can also occur from a 220V network. Also tapes can have different power, which depends on how many diodes are located on 1 meter of tape. The glow color can be varied.

The most common are white and yellow shades of ribbons.

Difference in color base, i.e. shade of the printed circuit board. It can be transparent, white, gray or brown.

The color of the base represents the appearance of the tapes when they are not turned on, it is especially important to take this into account when installing it in an open way.

Tapes are classified according to the degree of security. Common protection classes are IP 20, 33, 67, 65, 68. The lowest is considered to be IP 20. These are open-type tapes that can cope with minimal physical influences, such as touching, wiping from dirt.

They should not come into contact with moisture. The highest is considered class 68, which is a tape covered with a thick sealed layer that protects them from significant impacts. This type is considered fully protected. Such ribbons can even be arranged on the bottom of pools and fountains, and also freeze


The marking contains all the main information about the product. Here is the decoding of LED-CW-SMD 3528/30 IP20: LED - makes it clear that the light source is a diode; CW means white glow light; SMD 3528 - diode length and width 35 * 28 mm; numerical designation thirty means the number of LEDs per meter; IP20 - protection class.

There can be many connection variations. Monochrome tapes are connected using a wire and a power supply, and to connect several such tapes at the same time, you will need to use a parallel circuit.Multicolor will require an additional controller.
