Reliable + Video and Photo options Do-it-yourself foundation for a log house - how to do it? The creation of a foundation is mandatory for the construction of any type of structure. Is it another matter when, in some cases, a heavy monolithic foundation is required, and in some places you can limit yourself to point supports. In such a situation, a log house becomes the best option, since wooden houses are relatively lightweight and it is not at all necessary for them to make an expensive foundation. So, let's talk about how to choose a foundation for a log house.

What type of foundation to choose

As a rule, a strip foundation of various materials or a columnar base is made under the frame.

The specific type of foundation can be selected based on the results of the study of the soil (its composition, properties), as well as the level of groundwater. For this reason, before starting construction of a house, we recommend that you contact a company that provides geodetic services. Specialists from the company will not only help you determine the characteristics of the land on the site, but will even give recommendations on the choice of the base and materials of manufacture.

It is still important for oneself to know when and what type of foundation for a log house is best used on a particular type of soil:

  1. Reliable + Video and Photo options Strip foundation, usually made of reinforced concrete, most often used on very wet soil or soil with a high level of groundwater occurrence, for example, swampy or peat. Typically, these soil types are composed of fertile soft soil.

Note also that the depth of the foundation will depend on the weight of the structure, because the heavier the building, the better the foundation should be. An even greater role will be played by the absence or presence of a basement.

  2. In addition to reinforced concrete, a strip foundation for a log house can be made of brickwork, but this option is quite expensive, so it is rarely used.
  3. If the soil contains clay, sand, loam, and also rocky inclusions, then you can choose any type of foundation, but if you choose columnar, there will be some restrictions. If there are large pieces of rock in the ground, there is a high chance of stumbling into such an area while drilling.

Since all work is usually done by hand, you are unlikely to be able to break through the rocky rock.

  4. Do-it-yourself columnar foundation for a log house is used on dry soils with a dense structure, which are not subject to movement, but in the ground with a large amount of sand.

Making the foundation

Columnar base for a wooden frame

The easiest way to do it yourself will be exactly columnar foundation, since it does not need waterproofing, because the lower edge of the log house will still be higher than the surface of the earth. For the same reason that the foundation has no connection with the ground, this type of foundation can also be used on terrain where there is a complex and uneven relief. Moreover, in comparison with other types of foundations, this requires relatively few materials.

But the significant disadvantages include the fact that in this case you will not be able to equip the cellar.

Regardless of the material of execution, the technology for creating a columnar foundation is approximately the same. As pillars you can use:

  • Reliable + Video and Photo options Brickwork.
  • Concrete supports, which are poured into the formwork of a plastic / asbestos-cement pipe.
  • Concrete blocks.

  • Supports made of wood, which are made of glued / profiled timber, the use of rounded logs is no less relevant.
  • Screw piles.
  • Foundation on poles using TISE technology.

Whichever material you choose, the installation of supports is carried out according to a single method, the only exceptions are screw piles, for which it is not required to make wells, since the pile itself is already a drill. First, you should mark the territory, in front of which the construction site should be cleaned of a fertile layer of earth, and a layer of sand should be poured into the resulting grooves.

According to the foundation design, wells should be drilled for supports at 0. 2-0. 25 meters lower than the depth of freezing of the earth. The pillars must be located along the entire perimeter of the building with a step that is calculated in the project. Typically, the pitch is 1.

5 to 2 meters. Also, the pillars must necessarily be located at the corners of the building, and also in places where the inner walls intersect. If the lags are weak, they can also be supported with supports.

A drainage pad of sand and gravel should be poured into the finished wells, and then thoroughly tamped with a metal rod or filled with water. A support should be installed in the well, and the installation method will differ depending on the material selected.

Features of the manufacture of supports for the columnar foundation

From the moment the supports for the columnar foundation under the log house are made, the installation will be performed in different ways:

  1. If the concrete support is installed in dense soil, concrete can be poured directly into the ground. As a material for waterproofing, you can use pieces of roofing material, which are twisted along the diameter of the hole and inserted into it. Before the start of filling, a plastic / asbestos-cement pipe with thick walls should be inserted into the well, inside which a U-shaped metal rod should be installed as reinforcement. Next, concrete is poured. If an asbestos-cement pipe was used for pouring, it should be in place as a permanent formwork, and if a plastic pipe, it should be carefully removed.

  2. When using the TISE installation technology, before starting the manufacture of the narrow part of the support, the bottom of the well must first be expanded with a special drill, and then concrete can be poured. When the mortar begins to set, pouring should be performed as described above.
  3. When installing timber supports, you should first treat the posts with an antiseptic and fire retardants, and also take care of good waterproofing. To do this, the end of the log / bar, which is in the ground, should be carefully wrapped in sheets of roofing material, and then fastened together.
  4. Screw piles require almost no preparation and can be used on a site with any relief.

For this type of support, only the installation site and the absence of rocky inclusions during drilling play a role.

  5. If necessary, a hanging grillage should be made on top of the posts.

Making a strip foundation

The strip type of foundation is also made from various types of materials, but the most popular is the same concrete solution. Such popularity of concrete owes much to its low price, high level of strength, durability and reliability. Making a concrete strip foundation will not give you any inconvenience.

The marking and clearing of the territory for construction is carried out in the same way as in the manufacture of a columnar foundation. If you plan to make a basement under the house, the markings should be corrected.

Further, along the marked perimeter and under the bearing walls, trenches should be dug, taking into account that the cord runs strictly in the middle of the groove. The depth should be determined on the basis of the foundation design, as a rule, a shallow one is used for the log house, and it will require a ditch with a depth of only 0.6 meters.

Trenches can be dug even with a normal shovel if the ground is soft enough. But in the case when there are stony inclusions in the soil, you will have to use special equipment.

The formwork of the required height should be set into the trench. If it is planned in the project that the base should rise above the ground, but the formwork must also correspond to the size. After installation and fixing of the formwork with the help of struts, metal reinforcement should be laid on it, and at the corners of the rods, it should be bent and overlapped.

In the event that you have the opportunity to use a concrete mixer, the perimeter should be poured at the same time. If you did the mixing yourself, the concrete should be laid out in layers. Please note that each layer must be compacted with a vibrating plate.

The last laid layer should be leveled with a spatula and installed in it anchors / vertical sections of reinforcement rods, which will then act as a connecting link with the frame. The concrete should be allowed to pre-set for a week, and then the formwork can be removed.

Although it takes 21 to 30 days for the solution to dry completely, the frame can be installed a little earlier, since its weight is low. In this case, it is imperative to lay a layer of waterproofing between the base and the foundation.

Other types of foundation for a log house

And it remains to note what other types of foundation for a log house will be a suitable option. You can save a lot on creating a strip foundation if, when pouring cement into a solution, ready-made blocks of concrete or rubble stone are laid. This will significantly help reduce the consumption of concrete, which means that the final cost of the foundation will be several times lower.

You can also make a strip foundation from bricks.

But keep in mind that only the material that has been fired has the necessary strength, and it will cost more. For this reason, making a foundation using bricks is most often impractical. The use of a log or timber for a strip base is not advised, since even with good impregnation and waterproofing, the wood that will be used will be exposed to increased environmental influences, which will make it a short-lived material.

In fact, the requirements for the foundation for a log house are not so high when compared to more massive buildings.

But even in the case of wooden houses, you should take into account all the features of the area in which you live, otherwise, after a short amount of time, the house will need to be leveled, or even removed and re-made the foundation.
