Repair and hauling of upholstered furniture

Repair and hauling of upholstered furniture Restoration and hauling of upholstered furniture with your own hands

Over the past 10 years it has become fashionable to restore old soft pieces of furniture - Soviet sofas in the form of books, seat of chairs, as well as favorite armchairs.

The reasons why we begin to give new life to outdated things are sentimental and practical - a relic in the form of a sofa that was brought by a great-grandfather as a trophy from the war, or an armchair in which my grandmother sat and knitted socks for the whole family.

But usually we are surprised to understand that good Soviet furniture for the integrity of the frame and quality is much better than the new one, which is in the low and medium price range.

General information

Such pieces of furniture are usually made of raw timber, unpretentious spring blocks, and pulled over with poor quality fabric. Also, many restorers have appeared - there are even craftsmen who have ways to transform the appearance of a sofa so that it does not differ from modern products in its content and design.

But in reality, with minimal skills, patience and desire, repairing and hauling upholstered furniture with your own hands is not difficult, and even creative.

Methods of restoration and furniture upholstery

To update the appearance of soft pieces of furniture, you can use a couple of methods - washing and replacing ... Both are time consuming and technically difficult, but feasible.

All efforts will pay off when you experience the fruits of labor fully satisfied.

Washing of covers

This option is best suited for small pieces of furniture - seats of stools, chairs and small armchairs. In this case, if you like the fabric of the upholstery on an old but beloved sofa and is perfectly preserved, has a unique woven pattern, and you know that a modern analogue is not affordable, and then the sofa cover can be washed. Advantages:

There is only one drawback, but a tangible one - there is a high probability that the cover may "sit down" during washing or even creep away. Since the upholstery fabric is not designed to be washed, it is not processed to shrink, such as clothing fabrics.

Complete replacement of the cover

The most difficult and longest, but the surest way. Shabby and old upholstery can be ruthlessly thrown away, and a sofa can delight with a new fabric in fresh colors. You can do a complete replacement of the furniture cover yourself at home.

But be prepared for the fact that hidden problems may appear under the old cover - cracked frame beams, broken springs, broken ZhVP or inoperative locking mechanism. If, when opening the cover, you find internal breakdowns, do not despair - this usual operation to replace the cover will become a more difficult, capital phase in the constriction of furniture items.

This relatively new concept includes not just the replacement of upholstery, but also a complete frame repair, replacement of foam rubber, locks , spring blocks and whatever you need. In fact, this is a major overhaul of upholstered furniture, as a result of which you will receive a new interior element made to your taste.

Tools and materials

To work on the hauling of soft pieces of furniture proceeded comfortably, without unnecessary nerves and measured, it is required to prepare the required tools in advance.

For assembly and disassembly

  1. Pliers and a large flat-head screwdriver are required to pull upholstered furniture - hook and pull out the old brackets.
  2. A flat or Phillips screwdriver for the dimensions of the slot of the screw heads that attach the lock to the frame.
  3. Set of wrenches for bolts and nuts.
  4. Construction tape - make the necessary measurements when replacing body parts.
  5. Stapler - pneumatic or construction, and the first is preferable, since without effort on your part, it will drive long strong staples deep into the frame tree, even after a couple of layers of fabric.

  6. Staples from 0.6 to 1 cm, depending on the density and thickness of the selected upholstery fabric.
  7. Garbage bags (thicker and larger).

Other tools and materials are required for other tasks.

For sewing covers

  1. New fabric for upholstery - the choice in construction markets is incredible, you can choose according to cost and taste, and to do not be mistaken with the footage, sketch out an approximate detailing before buying.

Consider the usual roll width - up to 1. 45 meters (including the edging of the linen edges) and the placement of the patterns relative to the shine and pile of the fabric.

  2. Padding fabric for padding the rear surfaces of the seat and backrest. Detail is optional, but a layer of lining helps keep the pieces of furniture free from dust that can get inside, and the cost of lining is small. For this reason, do not neglect this operation.

  3. Sharp scissors, ideally tailor's for cutting.
  4. Thin remnants.
  5. Threads no less than # 10, and ideally, special ones reinforced for fabrics with high rigidity.
  6. Meter ruler.
  7. Paper for creating a pattern, if you plan to improve the appearance of the product - change the shape of the back, beads and seats.

  8. Sewing machine.

Consider the technical features

This is the first and dirtiest stage - you need to unscrew and remove the bygones, locks and assemble the frame. Then remove all the old staples that will be fastened to the upholstery frame. It is required to think over the place of disassembly - you will need to stir up the age-old dust that pervades the chair or sofa. And staples have a mean habit of scattering on the floor, as well as being absorbed into the soles of slippers or feet.

If it is not possible to disassemble the sofa on the street, cover the equipment (PCs or TVs, etc.) with film, and take everything that is possible to another room. You need to keep garbage bags on hand - you need to throw out a lot of rubbish, which has become the internal filling of the furniture. At the end of the work, immediately remove all garbage from the house, because various nasty things 0 from a dust mite to allergens can lurk in the internal dust from upholstered furniture.

Repair and replacement of parts

When removing the old cover, you can understand that under the harmless scuffs of the upholstery there are many serious breakdowns, do not rush to give up and throw out the sofa , calculating in your head how much it will cost to acquire a new one.

All repair problems are solvable, and the parts are replaceable - the list of breakdowns and methods of correction is not as extensive and scary as you might think at first.

Cracked frame beams

Repair and hauling of upholstered furniture All old armchairs and sofas are based on frames, which are held together with glue and gash. This is a durable and strong system that is much better than modern fastening with self-tapping screws. But when the service life ends, the frame corners begin to slack and crack. Beams need to be changed.

The service of upholstered furniture upholstery in the workshop is very expensive, but you can do everything yourself. Choose dry wood, without cracks and knots, bark - oak or the middle with a perfectly even and straight structure. Otherwise, the beam, which has a bearing load, and still does not have integrity and strength, will quickly burst. Damp wood in warm / dry conditions of the apartment will begin to dry out belatedly and warp. It is better to repeat the castle wash down - order it to the master carpenter or do it yourself.

It is better to impregnate the beam joints of the frame with PVA glue before bonding.

Broken fiberboard parts

It's easier here - measure and cut new elements with your own hands with an electric jigsaw or make to order in a special furniture workshop. It is better to prepare the separate parts of the jumpers (in an old sofa there are usually 3 of them, in the middle and 2 side ones), which are easier to change in the gap. You can attach them to the frame with a pneumatic stapler or nails.

Broken springs

The problematic place is the middle of the seat, where children love to jump and sit guests.

Certain craftsmen manage to "twist" the spring blocks, replacing the broken springs with new ones. But there is no guarantee that after some time some other spring will not burst and for its sake it will not be necessary to start all work anew. For this reason, it will be more rational to replace the spring blocks in full.

Replacing the seat belts

As a rule, the frame of the backrests and seats are strapped with large interlaced belts with foam rubber. Also, belts rarely break, and most often the attachment points of the frame and belt are wiped.

All belts that you think are durable will work. It is important that they be tightly woven, ideally made of synthetic material and at least 6 cm wide.

Foam rubber that has caked

All foam rubber grades have such a technical parameter as the number of compressions. This is an indicator of how many times a material can withstand compression and will be able to restore its original shape and elasticity. Almost always, in old pieces of furniture, foam rubber has long outlived its usefulness in this parameter and has become a rotten or viscous substance that resembles sticky plasticine.

Throw it away with no regrets and lay down new foam.

Replacing locks

Another popular problem is the following - after a while the steel mechanism begins to loosen up, a backlash will appear in it or the springs that snap the lock will fly off in a lying or sitting position. Examine the lock carefully, it will be possible to slightly change the screws or adapt a new latch spring. If not, then the lock will need to be replaced - fortunately, this is not a problem, in furniture fittings stores you will be offered many modern locks.

MK for sewing covers

The most pleasant stage of the work, and you can leave the furniture look in its original form, and in this case as patterns even old covers can be used.

Before starting work, it is required to shake them out well and vacuum them. When cutting new elements, carefully follow the position of the warp and weft threads, and also the direction of the pile.

This is especially true for the backrest patterns on the seat and the back, if the woven width does not make it possible to make a one-piece cover (we are talking about the upholstery of a book sofa). With sewing and creative skills, you can transform the look of old furniture, making it more comfortable, modern and tailored to your taste. The main part of the modifications is achieved with foam rubber pads - soft bolsters are added for the back, headrest pads for the back.

You can take into account the seating position and add foam seat pads and lumbar pads. When using folds, darts, curly details, the covers will get a perfectly new shape and become the most modern. In order to beautifully and efficiently perform work to improve the appearance of soft pieces of furniture, basic sewing and cutting skills are required. If you are not confident in yourself, it is better not to risk doing everything yourself, but to involve a master in the work.

Cutting and sewing

Look at the photo of upholstered furniture banner.

Now let's move on to the algorithm:

  1. Leave 1 cm seam allowances, depending on how dense the fabric is.
  2. Ideally, overlock or zigzag the edges of sewn fabrics.
  3. Upholstery fabric with a heavy pile must be swept by hand before machine stitching to avoid shifting parts.
  4. If a leather substitute, natural or artificial fabric is selected for upholstery, then a special roller is used as a sewing machine presser for the front seams, in extreme cases, you can coat the upper woven layer under the foot with a thin layer of machine oil.
  5. When sewing decorative overlays into the cover, the folds must be basted by hand.

Try on as often as possible during sewing - foam rubber, which softens the rigid spring frame, pliable material, the shape of which will be specified specifically by the cover.

Securing new covers

When the repair work is done, the covers are ready, you can start the crucial stage of stretching the new material. It is required to clearly understand that the final result and the appearance of the chair / sofa will depend on the quality of the stage. Hauling at home requires carefulness and patience. At the last fitting, you can correct mistakes - sew in or release the corners, alter the darts.

Do not be alarmed if the cover fits tightly on the frame - it will still be even denser during the fastening process. Worse, if the cover stretches freely, because attaching it with staples, there is a great chance of getting ugly creases and folds. The last step will be the assembly, and with the sofa, the first thing to do is to attach the lock to the seat and back, and then attach the resulting structure to the sofa pallet and fix the pollen. Install the legs last.
