Paint with rust effect - features of application
Recently, paint with the effect of rust. We will also consider how to achieve such a color in two ways - to imitate rusting or to rust the metal through the natural method. We will talk about how to make rust using different methods further.
In this article, we do not take into account the natural method of metal rusting, which gradually begins to occur to it under the influence of the environment.
Accelerating the appearance of natural rust is possible through chemical reactions that cause corrosion of metal surfaces.
Please note that you must first ensure that metal that should be rusted is susceptible to corrosion. Metals containing iron are prone to rust. But many materials are resistant to rust, such as chrome alloys or stainless steel. Cast iron and wrought iron will corrode perfectly.
The instruction is as follows:
During the process, be sure to use protective glasses and gloves.
Dilute the copper-acid solution with water in this proportion - for 1 measure of acid, add 50 measures of water.
At the same time, as before, one should not forget about safety measures (glasses and gloves), as well as excellent ventilation of the room.
Let's look at one more method.
This is best for tin or iron based metals. A prerequisite will be that the surface should not be primed or even covered with sealants.
The instructions are as follows:
- Mix one measure of vinegar and two measures of bleach in a container.
- Stir the metal in the container so that it is completely damaged. Wait about 1/2 hour, and after this period, rust will begin to appear on the surface.
- Wipe off the material with a cloth.
- Until the object is completely dry, direct contact with it should be avoided so as not to damage the skin with chlorine.
- Fix the rust with a primer. The easiest way is to use a primer in an aerosol can.
What other methods are there?
In addition to paint with a rust effect on metal, there are others very popular methods for accelerating corrosion processes.
But there are other methods as well. Rusting with hydrogen peroxide + salt:
Another method of rusting with vinegar and hydrogen peroxide:
Rusting with salt and lemon juice:
Now a little about artificial methods.
In order to achieve the effect of rust, the material should be spoiled. You can imitate rust, and at the same time, you can give a rusty look to metal and other types of material, in particular wood.
A rusty tint will appear when mixing yellow, red and brown pigments. You can also add a little blue color to give the coating depth and brightness. There is a natural pigment, which, without mixing different colors, will make it possible to obtain a rusty shade.
Such a pigment is called ocher (otherwise known as red lead), which is a mixture of iron oxide hydrate and clay. Natural ocher will not be an independent type of paints, and this is only a component that is added in certain quantities to paints and varnishes (enamels and paints) and primers.
In addition to this component, paints also contain other substances. The pigment is distinguished by the following characteristics:
- The hiding power is 60-80 grams per square meter.
- Oil absorption will be 25-35 grams per 0.
1 kg of substance.
- The pH of the water extract ranges from 7 to 8.
Ocher has excellent resistance to aggressive chemical substances (acids, organic solvents and alkalis), as well as resistance to humidity and light.
It is not necessary to buy a paint with a rust effect if you can give the metal a rusty look with a special film. Below are instructions for use:
There is one more interesting method left.
Imitation of rust can be carried out not just on metal, but even on wood. You will need two types of paint, table salt, sandpaper and varnish. One of the paints should be in the color that most closely resembles rust. The second paint will act as the main one, and it should match the pieces of furniture and other accessories inside the room.
Before applying a rust-colored paint, you should clean the surface of the wood from any kind of flaws.
You can also varnish wood. Next, paint the pieces of furniture with rust paint and wait until the surface dries a little. On a surface that is not completely dry, apply a layer of table salt. When the surface with salt is dry, apply the base paint.
Wait until the surface dries, and then remove the salt with fine-grained sandpaper. If you don't remove all of the salt, you will get a slight roughness effect that will accentuate the rusty color more. The last step is to process the wood with a protective layer of varnish. The rust effect will give any product a completely unique and unique appearance.
Moreover, all this can be done even with your own hands.
The main thing in the process of carrying out work will be adherence to the technological process and adhere to protective measures, since in most cases it will be necessary to work with chemicals that are unsafe for health.
