Sewing soffits with siding - finishing eaves: Instruction + Photo and Video Siding of soffits - finishing of eaves. Typically, an overhang refers to the lower part of the roof that protrudes beyond the level of the walls of the house. It is needed to protect the walls and foundation from rain. Its width can be from 0.4 to 1 meter.

But according to all construction rules, it is not at all necessary to file this part of the building.

But it should be borne in mind that there may be troubles. For example, a strong gusty wind from the side, which will blow under the roof, unprotected by the overhang, and then the roof covering will be torn off. And yet it looks much more beautiful when the "cake" - insulation, waterproofing and the ugly lower part of the rafters are covered. According to all the rules, the roof filing should be carried out after all work on the roof.

As you can see, the filing of soffits with siding takes place after all the walls are insulated and finishing is done, that is, this is a kind of final stage of work on the exterior of the house.

The device of overhangs, purpose and benefit

There are two types of overhangs - horizontal, or, as they are also called, cornice and pediment. The first type is obtained due to the lower part of the pitched roof, and the gable canopy is an inclined overhang, which is formed by the side of the slope.

Eaves overhang

It forms the lower part of the sloped roof and thus facilitates the passage of air into the attic. This is a characteristic feature of the attic roof variety.

Is it another matter for attic roofs - the air through the overhang enters the "pie" of the roof - to the place where there is an air gap. After that, the air continues upward, to the very ridge. Thus, the roof is ventilated.

Now imagine that the overhang will be tightly packed with boards. This will be wrong as there will be no ventilation.

But if you do not use a soffit at all for finishing the eaves of the roof, then birds can fly under the roof, mice or insects can climb. The rafters should be protected with a coat of paint, as moisture and fog will harm untreated wood.

Pay attention, that from all of the above, the conclusion suggests itself - the filing of the eaves overhang should not be made dense, but ventilated.

This ventilation can be done in one of several simple ways:

  • Sewing soffits with siding - finishing eaves: Instruction + Photo and Video The easiest option is to leave a gap between the filing and the building wall. If you use corrugated board for filing, then such a gap should be from 0.

6 to 1.2 cm, and for siding and lining 1-1.5 cm.

  • If you hem the roof cornices with metal sheets, clapboard, plates , then you can use already commercially available ventilation grilles, which will be built into the material.
  • If the overhang is sheathed with boards, a gap is left between them for ventilation, about 0.

    5-1 cm.

  • When using spotlights, you can take perforated material that was specially created for this purpose.

And now let's remember a few rules:

  1. The volume of ventilation holes cannot be less than 1/500 of the total ventilation area. Please note that if the roof is made on the basis of bitumen or folded type, a larger hole diameter will be required than on a clay tile roof, since the latter option is considered "breathing".
  2. All ventilation openings should be covered with grills, in the case where these are gaps, they should be closed with a mesh.

This precaution will protect them from leaves, dirt, birds and insects.

Gable overhang

Sewing soffits with siding - finishing eaves: Instruction + Photo and Video This type of overhang is formed by the side part slope, which is inclined. There is no need to worry about ventilation here, but what you need to take care of is proper protection from moisture and wind. Otherwise, with strong winds, blowing gusts and other things, the rain can be driven between the sheathing boards that protrude into the street. This is a serious problem, since the insulation can get wet and then no longer retain heat well.

It is interesting that when working with a gable overhang and its finishing, tightness is in the first place in importance.

Edge trim of overhangs

In two types, with an overhang from the end, have uncovered elements. If we are talking about a cornice overhang, then these are the end parts of the rafters, and in the pediment, these are the ends of the sheathing. They should be carefully arranged, while protecting them from bad weather. In addition, perforated siding (soffit) should be installed along the gutters.

In general, the edge finish is the edge finish. And what to make it from will largely depend on the material of the roofing that you are going to use. By the way, often a set with a roof covering is already included in order to arrange and sew up the edges.

Before starting the filing of the eaves, all fillets or protruding rafters should be cut vertically and strictly along the line. Cutting them is required at the same distance from the wall.

After that, combine the ends of the rafters with a strapping board, on which the frontal board will be nailed (usually it is made of metal). Most often, the frontal board comes complete with metal, bituminous and ceramic tiles. This part is also made of wood, which is necessarily covered with a protective compound or paint. It is on such a board that gutters will be mounted in the future.

Gable overhang is treated a little differently.

To begin with, the boards are cut off (those that protrude beyond the wall). In this case, the cutting line must be parallel to the wall. The end board (whether made of wood or metal) should be nailed to the trimmed edges of the sheathing and to the end of the ridge. After that, along a length equal to the length of the cornice, the end part of the board is covered with roofing material.

Ways to sew overhangs

There are many ways to sew overhangs.

You can do this both perpendicularly and in parallel, using whole sheets or just separate strips, use different materials and designs to secure parts. But, roughly speaking, there are only two filing technologies.

Hemming on rafters

This is perhaps the simplest option. The most important thing is that the plane at the lower ends of the rafters is common. This method is useful for roofs with a slight slope, no more than 30 degrees and with an offset of no more than 0.

4-0. 5 meters. The filing of soffits with siding is carried out strictly along the crate, which is made of bars or boards and screwed to the rafters. The filing strips can be placed parallel to the wall, strictly along the end of the rafters, but they can be stuffed perpendicular to the plane.

Horizontal hemming

This option is Sewing soffits with siding - finishing eaves: Instruction + Photo and Video Replaceable if the roof is steep stingray.

At the same time, the installation is done quickly enough, and the material can be significantly saved. For work, you should make a kind of box out of the bars, attach it to the wall and to the rafters (both below and above). Thus, when water hits the overhang, it will easily drain, and the timber that is on the rafters will be 1 cm below the wall timber.

Nail planks from the corners of the roof to the corners of the house. When the overhang is more than 45 cm, another longitudinal bar will need to be installed in the middle.

The rest of the beams must be reinforced with beams and stuffed perpendicular to the wall. In this case, do not pay attention to the method of filing, but attach boards or timber directly to the crate. Sheathing panels should be attached to them.

Tools and fixtures

When choosing a material for sheathing of the overhang, agree everything to the style of the house, as you agree that the roof lining will not look too aesthetically pleasing in white plastic if the house is made of dark wood. If we talk about a board, then you will choose a planed one, but if there is none, an edged one will do.

Ideally, buy softwood planks that are 0.05 to 0.25 meters wide and 17 to 22 mm thick. Before starting the installation, the boards should be treated with paint, antiseptic or varnish. Before starting, you should let the boards lie under a canopy on the street, otherwise they will be too dry or wet and warp shortly after installation.

When siding spotlights between the boards, leave 1-1.5 cm gaps for ventilation. When installing the boards perpendicular to the wall, attach them on both sides (with a wide overhang, or from three - the third mount in the center of the board). If the boards are installed parallel to the walls, they should be fixed every meter. Coniferous boards will be relatively inexpensive, about $ 130 for 1 m 3 , or $ 2.

6 for 1 m 2 .

  • Wooden lining is good because it has already been processed (unlike the same boards), which is why it is so popular. For overhang sheathing, you should take a moisture-resistant lining, which is designed for work in such conditions. But keep in mind that the lining, as well as the board, will have to be kept under a canopy in the air for a month. Installation methods are the same as for boards, but you do not need to leave gaps.

Instead, use ready-made ventilation grates, they should be spaced 1.5 meters from each other. The cost of such material will be $ 7 per 1 m 2.

  • Sewing soffits with siding - finishing eaves: Instruction + Photo and Video PVC siding (polyvinyl chloride). For filing, siding that is protected from moisture is ideal.

You can buy everything you need in the kit, namely U-shaped strips for finishing the edges, corners for fixing the joints of the strips and ventilation grilles. Install the planks perpendicular to the wall, attaching at 2,3 or 4 points. The number of bindings will depend on which overhang width you choose. It is not recommended to install PVC panels along the eaves of the roof, as it does not have the same rigidity as wooden planks and requires more fasteners, and also often sags. The cost of the material for 1 m 2 is $ 5.

  • Professional sheet (professional flooring). This material is quite convenient in terms of installation, since it can be laid in large planes, and attached at the same distance as the boards. The profile height can be from 8 to 20 mm. When filing the roof overhang when using a profiled sheet, a gap of 6 to 12 mm is left (a lot depends on the thermal expansion). Provide ventilation with special grilles.

The cost of the material is 10 dollars per 1 m 2.

  • Sheet metal . This means polymer-coated steel or galvanized steel, as well as copper or aluminum. The thickness of the sheets can be from 0.06 to 0.

08 cm, and the length is up to 600 cm. For good ventilation, you can put ready-made lattices, or pieces of perforated sheets. So, where the cutting line will pass, the steel sheets should be treated with a corrosion agent (this is not required for copper or aluminum). The downside of this material is that a special tool is needed for cutting. The cost of the material is 6 dollars per 1 m 2 .

  • OSB and plywood. For hemming overhangs, take such grades of materials that will be waterproof. Such plates are quite rigid and can be installed in large pieces. To do this, you need to make a box of wooden blocks, and then screw the plates. They should be attached every 100-120 cm.

Ready-made grilles are used for ventilation. The overhang made of plywood or OSB must be painted, otherwise it will be ugly. The cost of plywood is $ 7 per 1 m 2 , while the cost of OSB is exactly 2 times less.

  • Spotlights. Such strips are used for finishing the eaves of the roof.

They are made from a variety of materials such as copper, aluminum, steel or PVC. They have an excellent palette of colors and textures, so you can choose spotlights for the design of any home.

The set may include the following details:

  • Soffit panels.
  • Front strips (chamfers).
  • Finishing strips.

  • J-shaped profiles with slots.

Panels can be single, double and even triple, and also solid (for the pediment) and perforated (for the cornice). It should be noted that filing when using spotlights makes the job much forgiven. To do this, you will not even need to attract experienced builders, since you yourself will cope. The planks should be cut according to the width of the overhang, and attached perpendicular to the walls on the grooved profiles - no big deal! The cost of the material made of polyvinyl chloride is 13 dollars per 1 m 2 , chamfers and fastening strips are 5 times cheaper.

Instructions for filing soffits

Depending on the manufacturer and the material from which the soffits and additional elements were made, the installation rules may differ slightly. For this reason, always read the manufacturer's instructions. In our will consider filing overhangs using vinyl soffits.

There are several design features for installing soffit panels:

  1. Cornice with J-shaped profiles.
  2. Outside corner cornice.

  3. J-beveled cornice.

Most often, soffits are installed horizontally, although sometimes they are fastened along the rafter legs. For horizontal mounting, a special crate is made, its manufacture is described above, or you can watch a video instruction.

After that, all the necessary elements are attached to it.

  • So, first measure the J-profile of the desired size, to do this, attach it across the overhang and mark.

  • Cut the desired length of the profile with a grinder, it will be fast, and the cut will remain even.
  • Then attach the profile to the wooden frame with self-tapping screws.
  • When all the profiles are fixed, measure the distance between the two profiles and then you will know the size of the soffit strip. After that, cut the planks into the desired lengths.
  • In order to install the plank, first insert it into the wall, and then into the cornice overhang and attach it with a self-tapping screw to the timber lathing.

  • If you will not use a J-chamfer for cladding, then sheathe the front of the overhang with soffits too.
