Sheathing with imitation timber: step by step instructions

False timber is a natural finishing material that has many advantages and relatively few disadvantages. One of the arguments in favor of this material is that imitation timber cladding does not cause difficulties even for non-professionals.

What is imitation of a bar and what are the advantages ?

Imitation of timber is the technique of finishing buildings outside and premises inside. The material that is used in it is called a false beam, or imitation of a bar. These are facing panels made of natural wood, a kind of lining.

The material is used for cladding walls inside and outside the building, as well as for decorating the ceiling. The panels are also used in frame construction.

False beam

Material distinguishes from Euro lining:

  • lack of a depression on the front side (the so-called shelf);
  • large width and thickness;
  • maximum resemblance to a wall composed of timber, which is why it got its name.

Lining

Facing with a false beam has many advantages:

  • after finishing, the building looks like natural wood, and even a specialist will distinguish the imitation from the original only upon close examination;
  • during interior decoration hides the unevenness of the walls, allows you to hide wiring, other communications;
  • protects the walls of an old building from atmospheric influences;
  • has heat-saving and noise-suppressing properties;
  • creates a comfortable microclimate, since it is made of natural materials;
  • is simply mounted on the walls, so its installation does not require special knowledge.

The wood must be well impregnated with insecticides to protect it from pests

Due to these properties, false - timber is often used for cladding old houses.

In this case, the original material of the walls does not matter. It can be foam, gas, cinder blocks, bricks and even a rounded log that needs restoration.

But the imitation of a bar also has drawbacks, which should not be overlooked either. It is necessary that the material be thoroughly impregnated with antiseptics and insecticides. Otherwise, moisture will quickly destroy it, and can spoil the cladding and pests.

Processing should be carried out regularly when the previous layer expires. Detailed data on the duration of the composition are indicated in the preparation manual. Fire protection will also be required, since natural wood burns well.

The shape of the raised beam

Unlike the convex blockhouse, with which the raised beam is often compared, it has a flat surface. Chamfers are cut at the edges at an angle of 45 °.

After joining adjacent planks, barely noticeable seams remain, but not the same as those of the Euro lining.Rather, they resemble "calm" lining.

From the back side, 1 to 3 ventilation ducts are cut out, which run along the entire length of the bar.

Help. Previously, domestic enterprises produced wooden cladding without these grooves.

This led to the fact that over time, the timber was strongly deformed due to temperature fluctuations, swelled, cracks formed on the wood. The wood was susceptible to rotting due to excessive exposure to moisture.

The false block has the same lock as other types of lining

On the edges of the lamellas on one side there is a thorn, in the other - a groove. These are the connecting elements of the bar. The groove-ridge lock solves several problems at once:

  • makes the cladding windproof;
  • increases the sound insulation properties;
  • strengthens the cladding.

How to choose a false timber?

When choosing a false timber, pay attention to the following characteristics:

  • size;
  • type of wood ;
  • sort.

False timber is classified by grades, sizes, wood species

Dimensions

The timber is produced in different sizes, which allows you to choose the most suitable option for your purposes:

  • length - 2.5-6 m;
  • width - 1.10-18.5 cm;
  • thickness - 1.

    6-3.5 cm.

For exterior decoration, wider boards are used.

Which tree species are better?

False timber is made from different types of trees.

Conifers

This is one of the most popular tree species in home decoration.

The most available are pine products. Spruce is also used, but the tree is quite knotty, which is a disadvantage, although it is more resistant to moisture. The advantage of the latter is the uniform color. Therefore, on the spliced beams, the seams are hardly noticeable. Pine, unlike spruce, turns yellow over time.

However, Angara pine already belongs to premium types of wood. It has a high density, there are almost no knots in it. The same can be said about the Altai cedar. The timber made from it has a beautiful pattern. But a much more significant plus is strength and weather resistance.

The leader in wear resistance and larch remains for consumer characteristics. It is especially often used for external cladding. Indeed, its resin contains natural antiseptic substances. Because of them, the wood is not subject to decay.

Deciduous species

Linden, oak - a couple of trees, of which false timber is most often made. However, their application is different. Linden is most often trimmed with saunas and baths, since it does not have the required strength.In addition, under the influence of sunlight, it acquires a yellowish tint.

Oak has the best performance characteristics.

In terms of hardness, it is second only to ebony. In addition, it is resistant to all atmospheric influences.

Aspen is used to imitate timber, but quite rarely. Its core is subject to decay. Therefore, only a thin lining is made of it.

It is used for covering steam rooms.

The block house is an analogue of the raised beam - imitation of a rounded log.

When choosing a false beam, one must take into account exactly where it will be used. Larch and cedar are not suitable for bedrooms and children's rooms. They give off a rather pungent smell.

This can cause headaches and flare up asthma. In suburban buildings, you can use inexpensive pine and spruce. Panels made of these materials are also suitable for the bedroom. It is better to use oak, cedar in the living room.

The lighting of the room also matters.

If the lighting is dim, then light types of wood are suitable - pine, linden. For the southern rooms, darker oak and alder are chosen.

Grade

Table 1. Grades of false timber

Grade Characteristics
Extra Smooth surface, no germination, no rot, no wormholes. Knots - only embryos, no more than one per meter.

m. Allowed end cracks 30x0.5 mm, resin up to 20x3 mm, as well as wane and uneven, which are not visible during assembly.

A No knots falling out, no signs of decay or damage to wood by insects. Healthy knots - no more than 35 mm.

There may be burrowing, resinous, cracks at the end, chips on the crest and bottom of the groove, blue, but not more than 10% of the surface and 10% of the batch. Can be difficult on the reverse side

B There should be no rot, dead knots up to 10 mm. No more than 3 wormholes per panel (no more than 5% per batch). Pores, tar, wane, hidden after installation are not considered critical. Blueness and fading (up to 10% coverage) are not considered a marriage, as well as difficult from below.

C There may be not only dead knots, but holes as well. Longitudinal cracks up to 30x3 mm are admissible. Boards with wormholes, sprouting, resin pockets, rot, which does not affect the hardness of the board, are not rejected. The category does not exclude planing defects in any part and inconspicuous wane. They are used only for opaque coatings.

Help. Extra grade products are extremely rare on the market. Usually sellers give out grade A for extra.

Products of the AB category

Masters distinguish another intermediate class - AB , although standards for this category are not established. Boards of this class are opened with varnish, wax, paint.

How to install an imitation of a timber on the facade of a building

Installation of a false timber is carried out in several stages.

Substrate preparation

No matter what material used for the construction of a building, prepare the base according to one scheme:

  1. Remove the remnants of the solution from the working surface, clean it from dust.
  2. Make a waterproofing layer. The materials used must correspond to the building material of the wall. For brick, concrete, they take coatings or impregnations, for wood - films.

    The canvases are fixed from below. When changing the canvas, an overlap is made with a width of at least 15 cm. Separate canvases are glued with tape.

The walls are protected with hydro-insulating agents

The preparatory process is now complete. If at this stage lubricants and impregnating materials are used, the work will have to be postponed for some time.

This is necessary for the solutions to work or set. The exact time of drying, penetration into the depth of the building material is indicated in the manufacturer's instructions.

Trim

This is the frame to which the false beam will be attached. The lathing consists of individual bars with a side of at least 5 cm. The lumber is recommended to be selected depending on the thickness of the heat insulator.

If the wall is originally brick or concrete, frame dowels will be required for fastening, nails and self-tapping screws for the wood base. The craftsmen do not recommend using fasteners with plastic dowels.

On a flat wall, the lathing beams are attached to it closely. If there are irregularities and gaps are formed, the voids are filled with linings.

Attention! The backing should be synthetic, not wood.

This material tends to dry out. It is likely that during the operation of the finish, a backlash is formed and its quality will decrease.

Next, work is performed in the following sequence:

  1. Expose and fix the guide bars in the corners, strictly observing the vertical, for which they use a level.
  2. Pull the cord from one corner to another, fix it on the corner bars.
  3. Fix the rest of the beams, maintain a distance of 50-80 cm, which depends on the width of the sheet of the heat-insulating material.

  4. Install thermal insulation.
  5. A moisture-proof film is laid along the crate.

Often slats up to 3 cm thick are attached to the crate. This is necessary so that an air gap forms between the heat-insulating layer and the false timber. This enhances ventilation and extends the life of the wood trim.

Attachment of the false timber

Before installation, the timber for cladding is removed from the package. The material is not taken into work immediately, but they wait several days. So the timber will absorb moisture from the air, therefore, after installation, distortions do not form.

Different types of fasteners and how to use them

Install the panels from bottom to top.One of the fasteners is used:

  • With a self-tapping screw, the board is attached to the crate through the comb.

    Sometimes the screw goes directly through the board. Then it is introduced so that the hat is in a sweat with the front side of the bar. The recess is then hidden with putty or wooden corks, sawdust with varnish.

  • The galvanized nail is driven into the comb. When mounted vertically, it is also passed through the groove, hammering in at an angle of about 45 ° until the cap disappears.

  • Claymer is a reliable and convenient fastening clip, consisting of a clip. One end is located on the crate, the other holds the panel by the groove. Claymers themselves are nailed to the base with galvanized nails.

Fastening of the false beam is carried out in the following order:

  1. The starting board is placed with a ridge upwards, using a horizontal level and attached using the selected fasteners. The spike cannot be directed upward - this will collect water in the groove of the groove.

    From this, cracks appear on the board, mold forms, the wood will rot.

  2. Place the tenon of the second board in the groove of the first. Using a hammer, plant the second board, but not closely, but with a 5 mm gap. This distance is necessary to avoid deformation of the elements due to temperature fluctuations.
  3. Repeat steps 1, 2 until the top is reached.

After installation of all panels, the surface is coated with the selected product.

Attention! In the corners on the beams, cuts are made at an angle of 45 ° for an aesthetic joining of parts. Decorative strips can also be applied. They not only hide the joints, but are also a decorative detail in the cladding.

Installation of imitation of a bar indoors

Installation of a bar indoors is almost the same as on the facade of a building.

If the panels are laid vertically, then work begins from window to door. The interior panels are too thin. Therefore, the fastening method, in which a self-tapping screw is screwed into the spike at an angle of 45 °, is considered too rough. For such work, it is recommended to use furniture nails.

Pros and cons of imitation of timber

Perhaps the most difficult is the installation of panels on the ceiling.

Since a large load on the hands is created, it is recommended to take materials with the smallest width for such work. In addition, too wide a beam will visually reduce the ceiling area. The length is chosen so that there are fewer joints.

In stone buildings, the insulation is placed on a vapor barrier material. In wooden houses, such material should not be used, since this will only provoke the formation of excess moisture and lead to rotting wood.

The procedure for mounting the timber to the ceiling

Some houses already have wooden beams on the ceiling. In this case, the crate is not necessary. It is enough to use a vapor barrier layer.

But the lathing is still required if the beams have an uneven surface.In other cases, first, base bars with a thickness of 2-3 cm are nailed to the ceiling.

then communications must be protected if they pass along the ceiling. Then the ceiling is insulated, if necessary. Next, work is carried out, as in the installation of external finishing. The beam is mounted from the window.

False beams protection

Before starting installation, the material is treated with protective compounds.

For this, insecticides are used. These preparations protect wood from the most dangerous pests - bark beetles, woodworms, barbel, etc. Treatment is required against mold, fungus, as well as fire retardants. The sequence in which the treatment should be carried out is indicated in the instructions for the preparations.

Transparent coatings

To protect wood from moisture and other harmful effects, opaque coatings are used - for example, wax-based oils, varnishes.

Oil-wax has some advantages over varnishes:

  • the product does not emit toxic substances;
  • can be used even in a children's room;
  • allows the wood to breathe;
  • does not spoil the structure of the tree;
  • penetrates deeply between the fibers and protects the boards from the inside;
  • there are no aggressive solvents in the composition.

Such a coating can be with a color scheme, and give the wood a darker shade.

Sheathing with imitation timber: step by step instructions
Working with wax is simple and safe

As for varnishes, any varnishes are suitable for street work. For domestic it is better to choose water-based products. Its heat resistance will not be superfluous, especially with increased risks of fire.

Video - Waxing wood

Help. Some craftsmen recommend covering the wood even before laying. They say that when processing already assembled walls, unpainted places may remain.

The homemade recipe for wax coating is also known. To prepare it you will need:

  • beeswax - 9 parts;
  • carnauba wax - 1 part;
  • turpentine (gasoline can be used) - 90 parts.

Linseed oil, gum turpentine, Kolophon resin, better known as rosin, are considered the safest for painting timber.

How to apply wax to the timber

Waxing work perform in this order:

  1. Repair cracks, flaws. If necessary, level the surface of the bar with a grinder or sandpaper.
  2. Wipe the surface, remove debris and dust.
  3. Apply wax-oil with a brush.

    The excess is removed with a dry, lint-free cloth.

  4. Allow the composition to dry.
  5. Polish the surface with a piece of cotton cloth.

Opaque coatings

Opaque coatings are also suitable for painting.Such products provide protection, but also hide the imperfections of the material.

These include enamels, water-based and acrylic paints. Before painting with such products, wood is treated with a primer - for example, drying oil. This will reduce the consumption of paints and varnishes.

Imitation timber is an easy way to make your home attractive and extend its lifespan. With proper installation and subsequent competent care, the cladding will serve for many years.
